This year, we awarded 20 challenge grants, totaling $257,187!
Abe’s Trail Clearing in Girdwood – $4,000
The Girdwood Trails Committee will clear the Abe’s Trail extension of the Beaver Pond Trail of heavy tree parts early in summer 2013 to
make way for Youth Employment in Parks crew work.

This dedicated group of volunteers and neighbors is devoted to revitalizing Arctic Benson Park and creating an enclosed dog park.

Eagle Scout Candidate Gunnar Flotre will build an informational kiosk at this popular location to display a sign listing the rules of an off-leash
dog park.
Didlika Park – $4,050
The Polynesian Association of Alaska will beautify Didlika Park with Turnagain neighbors.
– $3,000
High School student Grant George will design and install a gazebo for the Anchorage Community Land Trust’s Glenn-Bragaw gardens.
– $4,000
Eagle Scout George Cruikshank plans to refurbish the informational kiosk at the Jodhpur trailhead with new paint, updated signage, brush
clearing, and bench installation.
– $20,000
The Singletrack Advocates plan to design and construct 6 miles of singletrack – soft-surface, narrow trails favored by mountain bikers – on
the north side of Kincaid Park. The group will work with volunteers on sustainable trail construction.

Eagle Scout Candidate Brian Durr plans to install a platform in Little Dipper Park, adding two benches to facilitate viewing of the Chugach.

AK Rush Soccer Club will make field, landscape, and play area improvements to this neighborhood park.
– $40,000
Neighbors Michelle and Jim Rogers are fundraising to develop Moen Park for active play spaces in 2014, including a playground.

The Fish Creek Working Group of Spenard neighbors will design and install an earthworks type sculpture.

The Girdwood Art Institute plans to create and install mosaics in the new Girdwood Town Square Park. Community volunteers will participate
year-round in all phases of the project.

The Anchorage Waterways Council and the Campbell Park Community Council will install two Mutt-Mitt stations along Campbell Trail by
Shelikof street and near Waldron Lake.

Over the next two summers Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage will flatten, repair, and rebuild this popular 4.5 km loop.
Refugee Fresh International Gardens (FIG) “Re-Fresh” Project – $2,100
Fresh International Gardens in Davis Park is run by refugee gardeners (enrolled with Catholic Social Services Refugee Immigration
Assistance & Immigration Services) and provides refugees with an activity that helps them interact with Mountain View neighbors, and a way
to earn money. FIG Refresh will replace a dilapidated plastic shed with a larger wooden shed, and fix two areas of fencing.
Roosevelt Park Swingset – $12,500
Neighbor Kelly Petersen plans to install a swingset and fall surfacing in Roosevelt Park.
– $20,000
First Tee of Alaska plans to replace the tee boxes and greens at Russian Jack Golf Course.
– $7,700
Best Beginnings plans to construct a series of signs, each featuring the pages of a children’s book, to be placed at intervals along a trail. The
set of signs will be available to check out for use at different park and trail events.
City Wide Tennis Court Repairs – $15,723
The Anchorage Tennis Association will raise funds to improve nets, posts, sun and windscreens in five parks: Delaney, Taku, Forsythe,
Scenic and Pop Carr.

Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling (ALPAR) will landscape and install a sculpture at the Westchester Lagoon confluence of the
Tony Knowles Coastal Trail and the Chester Creek Trail.
