Our AGM was held on the 24th of August 2012 and a new board of management took the helm.

The conference will be organized by the WCIC with the help of Prof. Veena Sikri, Convener of SWAN.

Dear Members and Friends

The SWAN network covers nine countries, namely Afghani-stan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Ne-pal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. SWAN brings together women from these nine countries in areas of shared interest through individual sector networks (also called SWANs) covering edu-cation; environment; crafts and textiles; health, nutrition and food security; microcredit and livelihood development; women in media; arts and literature; and women in peacemaking. They share best practices, exchange experiences and learn from each other. SWAN has held four Annual Conferences so far, each of which have been productive and successful.

We will continue our drive to increase the WCIC membership , thereby adding more strength to the chamber. This will enable us to come together as an organization of business and pro-fessional women to help urban and rural women develop their entrepreneurial skills and thus empowering them to better their living standards. WCIC will become a powerful voice for improving the business environment for women in Sri Lanka.

CONGRATULATIONS SANDRA WANDURAGALA

Woman Entrepreneur Winner 2011

Sandra Wanduragala started "Selyn" 20 years ago in the village of Wanduragala near Kurunegala with just 15 women. She began manufacturing handloom fabrics, followed by the production of other fabric-based prod-ucts adding a great value addition to handloom fabrics.Today, Selyn , has a large range of textile based prod-ucts including household linen for the local retail and hotel markets and children’s accessories and toys for the export market.Selyn also manufactures active han-dloom clothing and their 'Wear Sri Lankan' brand pro-motes locally produced handloom garments such as sarees, shirts, sarongs and blouses.

Selyn is a WFTO Fair Trade certified company which has bestowed on them the Presidencial Export Award Outstanding Performance in Handloom & household Textile 2006,Presidential Exports for best Small & Me-dium Scale Enterprise 2005 and the Presidential Ex-port Awards for outstanding performance in handloom & household textile 2005.Sandra won the NCE export award the Best Woman Exporter from 2000 to 2006 and the Indira Gandhi Priyadharshini Award presented by the Federation of Indian Women Entrepreneurs in 2003.

Sandra through Selyn supports Royal International School , a local & private educational initiative to provide English-medium education from pre-school to secondary level in Kurunegala.

Sandra says that ,'Selyn is more than a company and our utmost aim is to provide sustainable livelihoods to the many rural women and men who depend on us for their sustenance. We believe that everyone who contributes to Selyn ,from the weavers to those who buy our products, is responsible for success of our story.I must stress that we as Sri Lankans should give greater preference to Sri Lankan products as the livelihoods of many families de-pend of the success of these local productions, which in turn also contributes to the growth of our economy.I wish to extend my gratitude to all those who have supported and believed in the Selyn concept, specially to my brother and fellow director Hilary Wanduragala and all at Selyn for being so selflessly committed and motivated to make the vision of Selyn a realiy'.

Congratulations, Sandra Wanduragala, WCIC Women Enterpreneur of the Year 2011!!
