The chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the countries of Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr Werner Langen, who visited Kuala Lumpur from 10-11 May with a delegation of 6 MEPs from 4 different Member States and 4 political groups of the European Parliament, congratulated the Malaysian people to hold parliamentary elections in a democratic and transparent way. Dr Langen, who hopes for a peaceful and successful transition of power in Malaysia, called Malaysia a benchmark for democratic change in a region, where democratic values, human rights and rule of law are under pressure. "The European Parliament Delegation for relations with ASEAN is looking forward to cooperate with the new Government and the Parliament of Malaysia in all questions related to European affairs, notably in finding a fair compromise in the ongoing trialogue negotiations on the Renewable Energy Directive and their implications on the palm oil production. Finally, a swift re-launch of the negotiations on a Free Trade Agreement will strengthen future EU-Malaysia relations", said Dr Langen. In addition to Dr Langen, the ASEAN Delegation consisted of its Vice- Chair Jeroen Lenaers (EPP, NL), Burkhard Balz (EPP, DE), Peter Kouroumbashev (S&D, BG), Barbara Lochbihler (Greens/EFA, DE) and Barbara Kappel (ENF, AT).
