Chair of ASEAN-Delegation ofthe European Parliamentcongratulates incoming PrimeMinster Dr MahathirDr Werner Langen (EPP, DE) welcomes the latest political developments inMalaysia.
The chair of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with the countriesof Southeast Asia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), DrWerner Langen, who visited Kuala Lumpur from 10-11 May with a delegation of 6MEPs from 4 different Member States and 4 political groups of the EuropeanParliament, congratulated the Malaysian people to hold parliamentary elections ina democratic and transparent way.
Dr Langen, who hopes for a peaceful and successful transition of power inMalaysia, called Malaysia a benchmark for democratic change in a region, wheredemocratic values, human rights and rule of law are under pressure.
"The European Parliament Delegation for relations with ASEAN is looking forwardto cooperate with the new Government and the Parliament of Malaysia in allquestions related to European affairs, notably in finding a fair compromise in theongoing trialogue negotiations on the Renewable Energy Directive and theirimplications on the palm oil production. Finally, a swift re-launch of the negotiationson a Free Trade Agreement will strengthen future EU-Malaysia relations", said DrLangen.
In addition to Dr Langen, the ASEAN Delegation consisted of its Vice-Chair Jeroen Lenaers (EPP, NL), Burkhard Balz (EPP, DE), PeterKouroumbashev (S&D, BG), Barbara Lochbihler (Greens/EFA, DE) and BarbaraKappel (ENF, AT).
