Rod’s Ruminations
Hi All - Surprise! I’m actually going to be in town this week and at Rotary this week!!
Some great content in the Chatter this week (I got a sneak preview) and there is so much to talk about from District Conference
last weekend, that hasn’t even made into this week’s edition.
It’s also great to see that some of the discussions and topics covered on the weekend are already resonating within the Club and
in work that has been done in the last 2 days since getting home. I’ve certainly got a full list of ideas and ponderings for Rotary,
but the variety and scope of the speakers meant I also picked up some tips for work and at home. The multi district conference
to be held in the Melbourne CBD in February 2019 will be well worth getting along to.
One of the themes presented at Conference was talking about “what we are”, rather than “what we aren’t”. With this in mind,
Alick and a small team have put together a flyer for FFD and beyond helping to explain what Rotary is about, for each of us to
use and to hand-out to people as they come past our stalls at FFD.
Rotary Box Hill posted on Facebook a picture about our $4k donation for the Poona toilet project in India. It’s a great example of
what we do and what we are. We are providing fresh water and sanitation. We are providing a safe and clean environment and
building practical knowledge of hygiene. We are providing an opportunity for all students to learn all the time. We are making a
difference. If everyone has a simple elevator pitch ready to go for FFD, imagine how many people we might inspire to join
Rotary, or to throw some extra dollars our way? Cheers, Rod
Thanks, Rod What’s on this week?

Information on Bushfires and Rotary support
While many of our D9800 Rotarians and partners were enjoying our District Conference in Warrnambool, on Saturday night three major fires broke out. All roads were closed to allow emergency vehicles to fight the fires and several towns were evacuated. Thankfully there has been no reported deaths or injuries at this point. However, there were 12 houses lost, hundreds of livestock died and many kilometres of fences destroyed. The train service may take some days to restore due to damage to signalling damage. We were able to help out in a small way by diverting 120 of our Sunday lunches to the firefighters based at the Warrnambool Basketball Stadium which was a refuge zone. This morning I spoke with District Governor D9780 Ray Herbert which covers from Mt Gambier to Geelong plus Ballarat. I offered him any assistance needed. There is none immediately, as Rotary is not a first responder in these instances. The communities in the South West are very resilient, like most rural/regional communities. However, I did offer to help in some of the longer-term recovery work such as fencing, etc. Past District Governor Ross Butterworth has also been in contact with D9780 District Governor Ray Herbert to offer access to home furnishing goods and appliances, both from Western Emergency Relief Network and Donations in Kind. It would be good to focus any further enquiries regarding potential assistance through Ross, to avoid duplication of effort and confusion from D9780's perspective. As always, the people on the ground need to decide on what is needed and when. I have also spoken to Warrnambool City Mayor Robert Anderson who spoke at our conference and gave him the same assurance that we would help in recovery efforts if asked. Please pass this message on to your members. Yours in Rotary

International Women’s Day Breakfast Feedback:
This was such an interesting event to attend and we feel really thankful to have been
able to go. Overall, we learnt a lot and it was interesting to listen to all the speakers
and their stories relating to women in life and the workforce. We also got some new
ideas for our leadership team and for the Interact club that we are a part of, meeting
some amazing and inspiring women who are doing awesome things to strive for
equality and empowering each other. Thanks again to the Rotary Club of Chadstone
East Malvern for sending us along!”

Letter of thanks received from Sacred Heart Girls College
8th of March 2018 Dear President Rod, PP Judy and Rotary Chadstone East Malvern, I am writing to thank you for your generous sponsorship of our school in allowing us to attend the Women in Rotary's International Women's Day Breakfast. We greatly enjoyed listening to the panellists’ discussion on gender equality in the work place. Somehow, they managed to be both educational and also quite humorous- Husna Pasha's introductory comments on her "three heads" (being Muslim, Tasmanian and Indian) were hilarious and had us laughing along, and then just minutes later, we were listening to Andy Penn discuss Telstra's newest initiative to even the male to female ratio in technology. Personally, I found the achievements of Deborah Glass particularly inspiring- her international work and appointment as the Victoria's first female Ombudsman make her such a strong role model to all the girls, both students such as myself and my friends, but also to professional women already in the workforce. Thank you again for your sponsorship of the four of us, and for allowing us to experience such an interesting and inspirational event. Sincerely yours, Ruwangi Fernando Sacred Heart Girls College - Year 12 Student
