WELCOME TO A NEW MARKING PERIOD!
Please take a pre-test for Chapter 15 and answer the best you can.
ECOLOGY……
What do you think about when you hear this word?
LEARNING TARGETS
OVERACHING GOAL: to understand the interactions between animals and their environment.
LEARNING TARGET
* I can explain what symbiosis is and tell the difference of the 3 types.
ECOLOGY
Studying the interrelationship between animals and their environment
HABITAT – where organism lives
NICHE – role in community
what it eats, where lives, etc.
POPULATION – group of one species
COMMUNITY – several populations together
INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ORGANISMS
1. SYMBIOSIS – living together
a. MUTUALISM
2 organisms living together where both benefit
EX:
Termite & protozoa
Bees/birds and flowers
Lichen – algae and
fungus
b. PARASITISM – one organism benefits, the other harmed
PARASITE – lives on another organism
HOST - organism the parasite lives on
EX: tapeworms
mosquitoes
fleas
c. Commensalism - one animal benefits and the other unaffected
EX: burrs sticking on fur
grazing animals kicking up bugs for birds
WARM UP #1 4/12

LEARNING TARGETS 4/12
• Look at your 1st target. Put a 1-5 in how good you feel you know it in the 1st space.
• Add a new target today:
I can describe a predator/prey relationship.
FINISH NOTES CH 15 #1

• Assignment
2. COMPETITION – the struggle for limited resources
LIMITED RESOURCES:
space, light, food, water
3. Predator/ Prey
PREDATORS – animals that seek out and kill other animals for food

• Prey species often evolve protective mechanisms
Mimicry
Methods of defense: (KNOW 5)
Camouflage Bright Colors Poison Smell/Taste Staying in Large Groups (herds) MimicryHorns/ antlersRoars or Frightening Sounds
PLANT ADAPTATIONS
EX:• Spines• Waxy leaves• Deep roots• Wide leaves• Covered seeds• Thick bark• Drop leavesTons more!
What are the 3 main types of interactions we talked about?
Symbiosis
Competition
