welcome, young padawanletter from the CGCU executive committee

Welcome to Imperial College London - congratulations on making it in!

If youre reading this as a fresher, it means youll be studying in the Faculty of Engineering- this also mean that youve automatically become a member of the City and GuildsCollege Union, which is the faculty union for engineers.

Inside this guidebook (Spanner) is a breakdown on all the clubs, societies, events andresources that will be at your disposal as an engineer. This is different from the Unionsfreshers handbook - that ones for the whole university; whereas this guidebook isexclusively for engineers, so lucky you!

The City and Guilds College Union is a fully student-run union, with a variety of peoplefrom different engineering departments in charge. We look after the clubs under usand plan events for engineers, but were also tasked with the serious side of student lifeand politics: we make sure Faculty administrators are clued up about student concerns(like crazy deadlines or inadequate academic provisions), and we help them meet yourrequirements as a student.

In short, we aim to help you guys work hard - AND play hard!

Read this book well - its jam-packed full of info, and itll give you a head start. If youhave any queries, do drop us a line or pay us a visit. Well see you soon!

youre in the army now (not quite)welcome letter from the principal

May I extend a very warm welcome to you all to the Fac-ulty of Engineering at Imperial. You are joining one of the

most prestigious engineering schools in the world. Manycongratulations!

Over the century of its existence, the College has trainedand hosted men and women who have progressed to beleaders in all walks of life. The alumni around the worldwho have studied engineering at Imperial all talk verywarmly of their time here and the enormous influence ithad on their subsequent career.

    4

It is now your turn to take full advantage of the opportunities that are available to you.Engineering is about identifying (not always as easy as it looks) and solving the importantproblems that face us all today, such as global warming, energy, health, water suppliesand sustainable communities. Although you will be studying one particular aspect ofengineering, dealing with these problems will require a holistic approach, so part of youreducation will be to see aspects of problems addressed by other engineering disciplines.

This is one of the many reasons why it is important for you to immerse yourself in the

full life of the College. By taking part in activities beyond those of your selected degreecourse, you will not just enjoy yourself: you will be enriched by the wide cultural diversitythat is a key feature of life here. I very much hope that your time at Imperial will be fulfill-ing and that, with thousands who have gone before you, you will subsequently use whatyou have learnt to contribute to the well-being of the whole world.

Professor Jeff MageePrincipal, Faculty of Engineering

about the principalProfessor Jeff Magee is a graduate in electrical engineering and holds MSc and PhDdegrees in Computing Science from Imperial College London. He was appointed Headof the Department of Computing at Imperial in 2004 and Deputy Principal (Research)of the Faculty of Engineering in 2008. I bet you are wondering about what we dowell, we

organise great events at student prices: a number of club

    5

come say hi!Were a real friendly bunch, and we dont bite - so youre more than welcome to pop yourhead round our office for a chat. Whether its to have a look at what we do, or to suggestsomething thatll better our union - even if its to have a grouse about your life as an engineer(the workload is legendary, we know) - do stop by.

Directions can be found on page 7 of this handbook. Well see you there!

and bar nights, and the flagship welcome dinner in the heart of London. We look afteryour academic and welfare needs and we will even help you get your first job througha number of targeted career events throughout the year and your time with us.

Ill be honest, youre going to work hard here - but its not all about that, being an Im-perial Engineer means a lot more. Its about embracing all the aspects of university lifeand the traditions of the Guilds (and you will learn all about this later!)...and that meanshaving some fun!

The CGCU is getting bigger and better each year, and this year promises to be one ofthe best - so keep a look out!

ye olde CGCUtales of city and guilds from way back when

The CGCU isnt just a name (and a bunch of pretty faces) - its got a fascinating legacyin tow, so well start with a quick history lesson. Which is just as well; engineering is

probably better left to the lecturers!

    6

EARN *ALL* THE PROFITS!Way back in 1851, Britain hosted the Great Exhibitionat the Crystal Palace. It was an amazing display of in-ventive genius that really showed off Victorian Britainsenterprise, industry and culture. So successful and profitable was the event that The RoyalCommission, who organised the event, was tasked withthe responsibility of spending the earnings appropriately.

BUILD *ALL* THE PROPERTIES!With a view to increase the means of industrial education and extend the influence ofscience and art upon productive industry, The Royal Commission bought up 86 acres ofland in South Kensington. On it they built the three Exhibition Road Museums (Natural His-tory Museum, Science Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum), the Royal Albert Hall, theRoyal Colleges of Art and Music, the Royal School of Mines (RSM) and the Royal Collegeof Science (RCS). Today, the latter two are now part of Imperial College London.

TRAIN *ALL* THE GUILDSMEN!Around the same time, the Corporation of Londonand the City of London (The Guilds) saw a need to im-prove technical training. Thus, the City and Guilds In-stitute was set up in 1878, which remains an industrialexamination and accreditation body today (hence ACGIin your degree!) Finding a site for their training collegeproved difficult, so after some persuasion by the Commis-sion, The Guilds and Corporation building was opened onExhibition road in 1884 as the Central Technical College.

MERGE *ALL* THE COLLEGES...?Thanks to the Royal Charter of Edward VII in 1907, the Royal College of Science and theRoyal School of Mines merged to create the Imperial College of Science and Technology.Later on, Central Technical College then changed its name to City and Guilds College andjoined Imperial in 1910.

And there you go! Todays City and Guilds College (and its union) largely remain as theywere back in 1910 - whilst having acquired many traditions and mascots in the process.

the pecking orderunion structure at imperial college london

Now that youre a member of Imperial College, this automaticallymakes you a member of Imperial College Union (ICU). Based inthe north side of leafy Beit Quad, the Union is in charge of the

300+ (yes, we have THAT many!) clubs, societies and projectshere at Imperial.

    7

Commonly referred to as Guilds, were the faculty union for all en-gineers at Imperial. We primarily run the departmental societies

(DepSocs) for all Engineering courses, and engineer (pun intended) aplethora of engineering-friendly events. Most importantly, though, weprovide care, advice and a voice for all Engineers if they run into issueswith their courses, or university life as a whole.

city and guilds college union (CGCU - thats us!)

DIRECTIONS: Finding us is easy - just head into the main building (its that grand glassy structure), turn left intothe Mechanical Engineering Department, and look for Room 340 on the 3rd floor. Youre more than welcometo trade tales and ideas with the exec team, or just come and chill - we look forward to hearing from you!

royal school of mines union (RSMU)In addition to Guilds, if youre a Geologist or a Materials student, youll alsobe-long to the Royal School of Mines, another constituent union of Imperial. Thismeans you might face some rowdy drunkard stereotyping, or jibes aboutrock-collecting fetishes - better get used to it! (More about the RSM: Page 22)

The team of sabbatical officers (sabbs), elected once a year by members of ICU, run the Unionand are at the very top of the pastoral care system thats available to you as an Imperial student.Youll see them pottering around campus; dont be shy, do say hi! (Bad rhyme unintentional.)

royal college of science union (RCSU)

Home to the Scientists, this is the Guilds arch-rival. Rumor has it that theyhave an agenda similar to our own - their exec team can be found in their

office on the Sherfield walkway, practicing witchcraft and alchemy. As a mem-ber of CGCU, youll certainly be expected to contribute to the social clashesand mascot raids that contribute to this longstanding rivalry.

imperial college school of medicine student union (ICSMSU)Ah, the medics. Theyre quite the enigma, as theyre far too isolated from themain campus and lead very different lives to us Engineers (and the Scientists.)Were not that clued up about their union - but until the day we are, weremuch more keen on bringing the scientists and miners to submission instead. Sotheyre usually safe...well, for now.

Academic excellence - its the reason why mostof you chose to come to Imperial, and its a

wise choice, as our Faculty of Engineering is in-deed top notch when it comes to academics.

Academic matters at a faculty level are mainly decidedby the Faculty executives and a faculty teaching com-mittee. As students, we are the principal stakehold-ers of the decisions that are made by these people.

My role as CGCU Academic Affairs officer has two aspects. The first is to ensure that all

decisions taken by these boards do actually benefit the students. The second one is to illus-trate to the executives the students point of view when making decisions and to providefeedback once the decisions have been made.

I am Leonardo, a third year Mechanical Engineer and I will do my best to represent theinterests of the majority of the students from the entire faculty. If you have any queries onstudent representation within the faculty, or you simply want to understand better howthings are run in the college, dont hesitate to contact me.

Here at the Faculty of Engineering we have nine departments, and each one hasits own associated society called a DepSoc. These are student-led societies, and

all engineering students are automatically a member of their respective DepSoc.Each DepSoc has its own page as well, which can be found on www.cgcu.net.Depsocs are led by a DepSoc Chairand a Departmental Representative (Dep Rep),along with a few other volunteer student officers.

    12

If you want to knowabout society events (like the EEsoc Revue- pic right), theyll be the best ones to ask.

departmental representativeWith different responsibilities from the Dep-Soc, Dep Reps are in charge of the academicand welfare issues for students across all

years in their department. They also sit on theCGCU Academic Affairs committee, which hasbigger clout in ensuring faculty-wide issuesare dealt with properly. If theres a problemyou have with your course (shoddy lectur-ers/teaching, inadequate notes), contact yourDep Rep - its these guys wholl feed theseissues back to staff and get them sorted.

GETTING IN TOUCHDont be shy about contacting your Dep Rep (for course issues) or DepSoc Chair (regardingDepsoc Events.) Theyre here to make your time at Imperial the best possible.

The best way to get in touch with people around College is definitely via email. Weve listedyour Dep Rep and DepSoc Chairs contact details here, and you can also look them up bykeying their name into the College email directory.

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS is a student-ledcharity aiming to facilitate human development

through engineering. Here at Imperial, our branch ofEWB-UK aims to teach students about internationaldevelopment and show them how they can use theirskills to help those most in need. We do quite a fewvaried activities: from an outreach programme in Lon-don schools to inspire potential engineers, to a seriesof free-for-all lunchtime talks by some high-profilespeakers in the development community. One of our

    17

favorites, however, has got to be getting out and learning new pratical skills through our work-shops. We also host socials, from meals at an Ethiopian restaurant to paintballing and camping

trips. Were a welcoming bunch and we have lots of fun - do join us! (http://www.cgcu.net/ewb)

CGCU MOTOR CLUB aims to provide a range oflow-cost, high-adrenaline motor activities. Fromthe cheap but thrilling karting, through to Formula1 and Rallying we get you involved at all levels. We maintain a fleet of 8 karts (30-80+mph) abdorganise regular trackdays, teaching you drivingtechniques and kart maintenance. Youll find usworking out of the Garage on the South KensingtonCampus, on the corner of Unwin Road - especiallyon Wednesday afternoons. Whatever prior expe-rience you may (not) have, do stop by for a spin!

IMPERIAL RACING GREEN is for anyone seekingexperience in automotive engineering, business, group work and more - not just petrol-heads and

greasemonkeys. Around 100 students from multi-ple engineering disciplines come together to design, build and race low emission vehicles in the FormulaStudent. Its an entirely student-led project support-ed by academics, where everyone works in teamsand is responsible for all aspects of design, manufac-ture and testing of the vehicles. We also have and

R&D division, where we look at stuff like fuel cell range extenders for electric vehicles, batterypack technology, and numerous activities and projects related to motorsport and broader auto-motive applications. If youre enthusiastic about engineering and formula racing, hop on board!

CGCU RUGBY (RFC) is a relatively small but incred-

ibly social part of the Guilds Union. The matches tendto be played later on in the academic year, giving theteam a chance to get to know each other first at var-ious events. In recent years the club has created anannual fixture against a college of Oxford Universityand has even competed in and reached the final ofin international sevens tournament hosted in Berlin. There is also the chance to compete against our rivalunion, the RSM, which now decides the holder of theSparks Cup, as the RCS Rugby Club appears to have folded. Socially, the club has organised barnights and club nights at Vintage (formerly Chateaux 6) as well as impromptu curry nights. As weplay fewer matches than the Colleges main rugby club, and at a far more social level, the club isopen to and welcomes all abilities. Look out for our table at the Freshers Fair for more information.

IC ROBOTICS focuses on helping students cre-ate their own robotic/technology projects such as

robotic helicopters and self-replicating machines. We share our technical expertise and fund stu-dents own projects providing tools and materials. We also offer a wide range of courses throughoutthe year, and run very popular discussion panelsattended by global experts in robotics such as Kev-in Warwick, and the IBM team behind Watson.

You can find out more about these clubs and societies by logging on to imperialcolleg-eunion.org/clubs-and-societies/a-to-z.

Look out for them during Freshers Fair too, which will be in your first week. Theyll havestalls all set up with club/society members manning them, so feel free to go up and chatto them about membership and what they do!

    mascotryof bolts, spanners, and abductions

Hello and a warm welcome! Were Melanie and Yuchen, your mascot bearers.

Here at Imperial, mascotry is a tradition where faculties try to steal each others mascotsfor some fun, and to raise funds via ransom demands. Ransoms dont just involve charitypayments (they can even involve other demands to the president/exec team), so theyre theabsolute perfectexcuse to humiliate rival unions. There are a strict set of rules to follow, andbreaking them is just notdone - theyre meant to protect the people, property and reputationof the Faculty Unions. Its our job as bearers to keep the Guilds mascots safe from other unions.

Boanerges (pic left), better known as Bo, along with Derrick, are the

two Guilds motorized mascots. Theyre inviolate, which means thatstealing them for ransom is NOT allowed. Bo is a 1902 James andBrowne veteran car; only 1 of 2 models remaining. Derrick, on theother hand, is a 1926 Ner-a-Car motorcycle. Bo gets brought outannually on the VCC London to Brighton Run, so youll see him then.

Spannerand Bolt are our slightly more portable mascots - theyre the ones pictured onthe top of the page. Portable might be the wrong word, however; even though theyre

violate (ransomable), they weigh in at 64lb and 68lb respectively - now you see why ourjob is hard! However, it does help deter rival mascotry teams from escaping with them easily.

Spanner is said to be made so one end perfectly fits the boltson London Bridge, and the other around the wheel nuts onBo. Youll see these guys everywhere, particularly duringGuilds events like the dinner. These guys also go hand inhand with the Boomalaka - more of that on the next page!

the boomalakathe warrior chant for imperial engineers

An ancient chant of the City and Guilds College Union, the Boomalaka is just one ofthe Guildish traditions here at Imperial. Think of it as a bit like the New Zealand All-

Blacks psyching themselves up for their rugby matches (in fact, its even rumored thatthe chant has Maori origins because of how it sounds) - except because were refinedengineers, we use it to psych ourselves up for other things. These may include formaldinners, downing a pint in the bar, and the odd encounter with scientists and medics.

    20

    PRESIDENT:

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Guilds,Are you in good voice?

    ALL:YES!

    PRESIDENT:

    Then lets have a BOOMALAKA!

    ALL:

Boomalaka, BoomalakaRA! RA! RA!Zingalaka, ZingalakaYA! YA! YA!Boomalaka, BoomalakaWho are we?We are, we are C&G!OOOO-AY!*OOOO-AY!*OOOO-AY!*RA! RA! RA!HOORAY!

    *These lines

During our events, whenever theBoomalaka ischanted, our

Mascot Bearers(you met them onthe previous page)have the - er, un-enviable task ofholding Spanner and Bolt well above theirheads for the duration of the chant. 60+pounds of solid bronze isnt easy to lift!

Image: One of our past Spanner bearers atthe 2011 CGCA Annual Dinner, Saddlers Hall.

The Boomalaka is quite a common fixture dur-ing our formal dinners, most notably the CGCUWelcome Dinner (at the lovely Caf de Paris) thathappens in the later weeks of October. The CGCUPresident will include it along with his/her pre-din-ner speech, so by all means, join in - its one of ourquirkier well-loved traditions here at City and Guilds.

*These lines here are chanted a bit like howa football crowd would when leading upto a corner kick. The longer your oooosand the louder your ays, the better!

At the end of the Boomalaka (whenyouve said HOORAY!, Guilds(wo)menare expected to punch their fists up in theair - so dont forget to follow suit.

tie clubs at Imperial dating back to 1921, is also a large part of the RSMs antiquity. Ourtraditions are very important to us miners and Im looking forward to upholding them tothe same level in the year to come. Im sure that youll hear a lot about us throughout theyear, and maybe even experience the RSM spirit at one of our ever-notorious bar nights.

Materials Society caters for the social side of the Materialsdepartment. They regularly wage war upon the peskyDLB and enjoy events such as paintballing, pub golf anda New Years curry night on Brick Lane. Along with this, they run factory tours to Rolls-Royce and Tata Steel, twocompanies with very strong links to the department.

RSM Rugby is renowned throughout collegefor its wild social life and hard-hitting games!

They practice once a week during the firstterm and have a couple of warm-up games inpreparation for the Bottle Match. Theyre al-ways in need of new blood to keep the RSMspirit going - not that the old blood is runninga bit low, rather, its a little too high on spirits!

RSM Football is a competitive yet more social side compared to other football teams at Impe-rial. Competing in the University of London leagues, Cup and the renowned Bottle Match, play-ing for RSM allows you to integrate into the unique RSM community whilst regularly playing

at a high standard. With another very strong season this year, winning promotion and gettingto the later stages of the cup, any keen footballers are needed to keep the momentum going!

RSM Hockey is open to anyone who is up for a laughboth on and off the hockey pitch, with the bestmatches and social events at Imperial. If you enjoyplaying (any level beginners welcome!) withoutrunning laps or doing chin-ups, this is the club foryou. Its extremely friendly and alumni return often

to join in for a game or two. With a mens, womensand mixed team there are matches from Octoberto March, finishing the season with an Easter tour.

RSM Netball is one of the RSMs newer clubs, becoming more popular with every year. The girls know how to lay down the law, particularly in the fierce competition of the Bot-tle Match and are coming back with a vengeance after last years loss. Training is phasedin often alongside that of the IC Netball squad, and all abilities are welcome to come along.

RSM Basketball is the newest addition to the RSM sports line-up. Having played fantastically inthe 2011 Bottle Match, they were disappointed to have missed out this year. Were expecting bigthings from these guys (and girls) in the future - they have a load of fun as one of our mixed clubs.

RSM Golf meet often for a bit of practice at the range or a socialround at one of Londons many courses. The RSMs local course isRuislip Golf Club. The highlight of the RSM golfing calendar is thematch against the CSM in the infamous Bottle Match. Golf aside, they also have social events throughout the year, including pubgolf across South Kensington and Fulham.

Every RSM sports team competes in this weekend-long competition across the disciplines of Netball,Squash, Golf, Basketball and Hockey, finally culminating in the all-important rugby match which

decides the new home of the bottle for the next 12 months. The Bottle is the official match trophy,a 3-ft beer bottle liberated from a Bass-Charrington beer lorry by RSM students back in 1946.

The RSM will be hosting the Bottle Match this year, with the aim of continuing our winning run andretaining our bottle. The competition takes place over one weekend, with golf, squash, basketballand netball on the Friday. Then football and hocket get an early start on the Saturday morning, andthe afternoon see the kick-off of the game which gives its name to the whole weekend: the MensRugby Bottle Match. After all this everyone gathers for a large informal players dinner on Saturdaynight, followed by one big party to either celebrate success or drown sorrows of chances missed.

Clementine (Clem) is the RSMs motorized mas-cot, a lovingly restored 1926 Morris T-type Truckthat originally belonged to the Courage Brew-

ery Estate. She is always in attendance of RSMevents to ferry people between various wateringholes. Clem is surprisingly reliable, having com-pleted the 560 mile Historic Commercial VehicleSociety Trans-Pennine Run in the past despiteher age (and winning an award for it!) Shes al-ways in need of new adoring fans to keep her onthe road, with at least one trip a week to the pubor the chippy - so if youd like to get your handsdirty doing some real engineering, get in touchwith the RSM Motor Club: [email protected]

The RSMs official mascotis the ever present and everweighty mining lamp knownonly as Davy. Davy is a Davylamp (imaginative!), an in-genious device designed bySir Humphrey Davy whichhouses a candle inside a meshso fine that a flame cannotpropagate through it, thus allowing deep seemsof ore to be mined without risk of explosion, and alerting miners to the presence of flamma-ble gasses by burning brighter with a blue tinge.

Davy is part of the RSM family and can oftenbe seen around and about at the many socialevents held by the RSM, though always underthe watchful eye of its many guards: all mem-bers of the elite and secretive group known asskinners bottom, responsible for countless actsof bravery and ingenuity in stealing the variousmascots of rival unions.
