    A Taste of Chicago

Te rst assignment in my Fall Com-puter Graphics class was to illustrate alandscape. Since moving to Chicago,my idea o landscape as changed romarm land with animals, to skyscrap-

ers with diverse people. I believe inthis assignment I achieved that. Tepicture above was the last omy assignments to includeall o the techniques learned

throughout this class. Tissection will take you through-out my entire process withrough dras to my nal product.

Cra- Tis drawing was created againin Illustrator. Te color/picture is romweek 4. In addition to the techniquesused to create the drawing on week 4, Iused the brush tool to produce strokes

along the outsides and inside o thebuildings. I changed the color o the

strokes and adjusted the actual brush

used selecting rom various brushdesigns in the brush pallet. I was able touse the brush tool to draw the illusiono windows in the buildings.

Concept- Tis picture o Chicago is

more realistic. Te scene with the

background color gives the city agloomy vibe. Te brush stroke arothe clouds add to the illusion o agloomy day. Compared to the otheillustrations, the detail that stands

the most is the brush strokes on thbuildings. It was suggested that in

drawing there is more deTe way I tried to establithat was by drawing wha

looks like lines o windowthe buildings.Composition- Te viewe

attention has now been changed t

at the buildings on the side o illustion. Te newly created windows adetail to the drawing that I was loto achieve.

Original photo o Chicago, used in Adobe Illustrations.

Te picture displayed on top shows the process o using Adobe Illustrator with its various windows and options that I usedwhile creating my illustration o Chicago. Te picture below is a copy o t he rst image that I created with Adobe Illustrator.Te photo o the rump ower is displayed as a unique process I used within Illustrator with the gradient eature.

Cra- Using Adobe Illustrator, I was able to t ransorm a photo o the city o Chicago into a drawing highlighting the ocuspoint o the rump tower in the background. Was able to create shapes to outline the skyline. I began drawing t his image byhaving the photo I chose o the city in the background, this allowed me to trace t he object that I saw with precision. First I de-cided to draw shapes around the buildings in the photo to create the initial skyline. I was able to use t he pen tool to click andcreate archor points to connect to create a shape. I continued this with creating shapes around the buildings until I achieved

a skyline. Te next tool I used was the eyedropper tool. I used this to select the color o the building rom the original photoand place it as the color o t he building in my drawing. I was also able to create a similar background and clouds in the skywith the pen tool. I was able to curve the square edges by using the ^ tool on the pen tool option listing. Tis helped with theull aect o the colors o the skyline being similar to the original photo. Next I took the brush tool to t ry and establish lineswithin the river to create the eect o fowing water. In addition to t he color on the photo, I wanted the middle building to

stand out. I was able to do so with creating a gradient. I clicked the gradient button below the ll and stroke options, and alsoselected the gradient option within the tool bar and under the windows option on the top o the screen. Tis allowed or meto draw the line o gradient (lightness to darkness) in order to establish more eect to the building.

Concept-the main building in the center o the picture draws your eyes attention. Te hues o the stroke also add to thedrawing. Tis is the rst image I drew and I wanted to illustrate (as in the picture) the colors o the skyline and the buildingeatures.

Composition- An issue that arose with the drawing was the outline and shapes that could be added to the photo.

Cra- Adobe Illustrator. Tis illustration is crazy colors. I used t he color scheme o ice cream colors because it was lighand airy.Concept-Tis is showing the city i it was the colors o ice cream. Your eye is still being drawn to the main building in t hmiddle due to the darkness o its color compared to the rest o the buildings. Te sky a lso gives it a unique background tphoto, with it being green instead o a shade o blue.

Composition- I was going or a look o colorul, light and airy. Te typical colors o the metal seem to put a damper on tcity skyline. Tis livens it up. I believe the yellows ba lance the skys green to really make the shapes o the buildings pop.

Cra- My previous illustration in Adobe Illustrator. Was told to transorm our picture into a mono-chrome design.I was able to use various color tools and ormats to a djust the hues in the picture. Picked out a specic green in the

picture to elaborate and design all the other colors occurring to this green I chose.Concept- Te picture is showing the city i it was a shade o green. Te eye is being drawn to t he main building inthe middle o the picture has it has been in the rest o the illustrations.Composition- I tried to keep the same p attern throughout this photo has I had with previous illustrations- where

your main ocus is the river running up to the main building with the sky in the background. I think that the skyscolors add to the eect o the picture and make the buildings pop.

    The Importance of Landscapes

For the first assignment, the class was in-structed to take landscape pictures. In thesepicture we were to find as much space aspossible, thus leading to the name spacepictures. Since moving to the city roughly3 1/2 years ago, I have realized that myperception of space and landscapes havechanged. With this, the usual farm landand or orchards that you would normallyassociate with spaces and landscapes wereout of the question. Instead, I realized that

Chicagos space and landscapes came frominside the heart of the city, what glowsevery night within the city, its skyscrapers.By realizing this on my journey downtownI took every opportunity in attempting tocreating the perfect picture. With this, Ileaned out of car windows, stood on top ofpeoples drums (or buckets) on the side ofthe road, was a runaway on a dinner cruiseship, but most of all I took images of spaceevery moment I could. With this mind-setand while looking through pictures, I real-ized I have always treated photography toa higher level than just a hobby, but ratherto tell a story. So with this, let me tell youmine...

    a taste of europes space

    Copenhagen, Denmark

    While scrolling through old pictures

    of past vacations and experiences,

I noticed a trend throughout my

photography. I was intend a photogra-

pher of spaces. Ironically enough, I

    didnt realize this unique information

until I was looking through pictures

and documents to put together this

    magazine. The point that interested

me the most was the unique styles

    throughout my photos. In simple

fashion, I was able to take a camera-point and shot. Boom, The scene was

captured. But as I continued to go

through I realized that each picture

came with a different vibe. I was able

to create a story by looking at the

    picture and realizing its importance

not only in its surroundings, but in

my own personal life. This picture of

the main strip off the sea in Copen-

hagen, Denmark, tells the story of my

opportunity of a lifetime. I was able

to experience unique parts of Eu-

rope that many people dreamed (or

never heard) of before. The concept

of this picture came from a draw-

ing from a postcard I saw in a shop

in Denmark. The drawing was of the

uniquely colored houses with a few

ships gathered on the water. I wanted

to replicate that drawing with my

way of capturing a scene, a photo. I

was able to accomplish just that- and

to this day (over 4 years later) this is

still one of my favorite pictures.

more of europes spaceThe Little Mermaid. Growing up in

    America, The Little Mermaid was

nothing more than a Disney movie.

Roughly 18 years later, I realize that

this movie and book (which while I

was little thought it was based off

the movie) was based off a Danish

tale. I found this statue very intrigu-

ing. The woman is torn with what to

do in life. While looking at this pic-

ture, you get the perception that she

is a lost soul, waiting to nd her way

back home. With this many people

can easily relate too. I wanted thispicture to tell a story of a lost soul,

but with hope of nding her way

back home. She lives a full life that

she is waiting to fulll. Luckily, with

the touch of a button, I was a ble to

capture this moment with a photo.

    Anyone who has traveled can

    explain to you the changes

that occur the second you step

    out of your comfort (home)

    zone. A simple change in

    weather, personalities, even

    spaces is an interesting sur-

prise, but is benecial to re-

    ally appreciate everything you

are given in life. This picture

(left) was taken of a restau-

rant inside of a theme park in

    Denmark. The unique factor,

(other than the fact that this

    is a beautiful restaurant inside

    a theme park- to Americans

    this would sound absurd) was

the daily dinner. This was notsomething that was rushed or

    interrupted my various en-

    tertainment items. This was

    the time everyday people

were able to sit down and talk

about what they did and truly

spend it with who they love.

    Little Mermaid

Restaurant located inside Denmarks largest theme park.

Looks like a Palace right? Well... In this case you are right. With the opportunity to travel across

Europe, I found myself in Russia, looking to tell a story from the past. With my snap-shot camera

in hand, I found it hard to resist taking a picture of the magnicent palace accompanied by gold

statues and water fountains and miles upon miles of gardens. I wanted to capture a picture that

would be able to portray my ah moment upon exiting the palace. At the second I was able to

capture the moment, water fountains arise with great splashes of water, which added to the af-

fect of the gloriousness of this location.

The photo (left) captures a unique room.

    Throughout history, monumental achieve-

ments have been made, this room is an

example of such. The room has thousands

of genuine gems and stones glued to cover

every inch of the wall. This room stood outto me based on its lavish appearance, but

with such grace. The layout of the gems

are done in a way that it is not obvious

what you are looking at- yet you are able

    to identify it right away.

...benecial to really appreciateeverything you are given in life.

used my snap-shot camera to capture these moments.I was looking or the most unique places that wouldbe able to dene a story or situation that was occur-ring. Te viewers eye is drawn to the colors on the

Te above pictures o water ountains are the same water ountain. But my looking at the color o thepicture and angle, it looks as i it is two completely areas. Te eng shui water ountain is a great to ol thatis known to attract good luck and prosperity. Water ountains combine sound and movement as a cure toboth retain and activate the qi or energy o the space. I situated in t he right spot, the constant stream o

cascading water can harnesses the qi in the area that needs it the most. Looking at this ountain and it rep-resents a peaceul, calm time in lie. Te concept o the photo was to develop something that would appealto the eye but would still give enough impact o a scenic yard.

Tis picture displays homes and mu-seums that are beyond the garden. Tegarden displays vibrant colors with aunique mix across the large landscapein the photo. Tis photo also includes
