Sage Award Winner Doreen McKerracher, and all those who have belonged to CFUW for 50 Years Plus, with our Regional Director, Mary Jane Wasznyski.

September Meeting 100 years celebration

'The Plot Thickens' was an afternoon author event held on Sunday Oct. 27 to raise money

for our Scholarship Fund. It was a wonderful occasion, with our member Jill Downie interviewing fellow mystery/thriller authors Melodie Camp-bell and Ian Hamilton. They discussed the writing process and character devel-opment as well as the challenges of the publishing world today. A lively question and answer session attested to the audi-ence’s enjoyment and engagement. We raised $1,000.00 for the scholar-ship fund with around 65 people attend-ing, many of whom queued up to buy the authors’ books from our event partner, Epic Books. Brenda Wright

CONGRATULATIONS!

Action and Advocacy The goal of Action and Advocacy in the 100th Anniversary year was to complete 100 acts of advocacy. Members have achieved the goal with a good response to our letter-writing campaign addressed to the provincial government to advocate for an increase in benefits for social assistance recipients so they can afford healthy food, and to support Bill 60 which could lead to more adequate levels social assistance. We meet on an ad hoc basis to deal with any resolutions coming forward from the Ontario Council or CFUW National. When there are new resolutions, members of the group do an extensive review of the background materials used and make a recommendation to the club as to whether or not the resolution should be supported by our club. These recommendations are presented at the March general meeting and our club's delegate to the National AGM is charged with voting on our behalf. We are always looking for members to assist in this interesting work. If you are drawn to the issues of equality, social justice, and lifelong learning for women and girls, please let me or any of the executive know. “Women's History Month at Whitehern Sheri Selway

CFUW celebrated Women's History Month (October) with an event at Whitehern Museum. The McQuestens made a big contribution to early Hamilton, but faced many challenges along the way.

The workshop "Women of Whitehern, the Life and Times" fo-cused on the women, especially Mary, mother of Tom, and Ruby his sister. Discussion was lively as we contemplated mental health issues, poverty, illness, and addiction. We came to real-ize that life 100+ years ago had many challenges, and the McQuestens were doing their best in difficult circumstances. The discussion was followed by a tour of the house.

A big thank you to the staff of Whitehern, especially Tom Minnes and Nonni Iler (dressed as the maid who worked at Whitehern for many years) for the presentation, discussion, and tour but especially their enthusiasm for celebrating Women's History Month!
