This Registration Guide contains all the information you need to make the registration process go
smoothly. You will find descriptions of conference events, so please take time to read them and make
your decisions before you start filling in the online registration form. Your registration will not be
completed until you click SUBMIT at the end, and cannot be interrupted and saved.
You will be asked to enter the following information on the registration form:

Registration The CFUW AGM Registration Table will be located in the lobby of the Fort Garry Hotel with the hours of
operation as listed on page 3. Pick up your conference bag, conference program and business material.
Check that the list of your optional events is accurate and if not please see a member of the LAC.

We have prepared an intriguing line up of tours both local and a little further afield and, in some cases,
tours are structured so you can take one in the morning and another in the afternoon. The Tours
Personnel will be located at the CFUW AGM Registration Table.

1. Folklorama is the largest and longest-running (since 1970) multicultural festival in the world with over
40 pavilions showcasing unique cultures and featuring live entertainment, cultural displays, and ethnic
cuisine. There are VIP tours available to visit two pavilions (65) or three pavilions (80) with transport on
an air-conditioned bus and priority entry to the pavilions. Min 25, max 50.

Friday August 16th – Celebrating CFUW’s History and Future
Presentation by Dr. Dianne Dodd, Writer of the CFUW History
To commemorate and celebrate CFUW’s 100th Anniversary in 2019, CFUW contracted Dianne Dodd, an
Ottawa researcher and historian to write the history of the organization. The book will be published by
Second Story Feminist Press.
The book deals with the foundations of CFUW; advocacy and suffrage; the 1920s; the depression;
women’s right to work; the war years; domesticity and feminism; the Royal Commission on the Status of
Women; making peace with women’s liberation; the 1980s, 1990s and beyond; the present and future
of CFUW.
Don’t miss Dianne’s recounting of CFUW’s proudest accomplishments. Her presentation will be followed
by a short video by Ion Webster highlighting some of CFUW’s achievements over the past 100 years.

Unveiling of the CFUW Plaque
On July 21, 2011, the Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of the Environment and Minister responsible for
Parks Canada, designated the establishment of the Canadian Federation of University Women as a
National Historic Event. The Government of Canada will be unveiling a plaque acknowledging the 100th
Anniversary of CFUW.
Panel on Women and Leadership: Future Directions – Chaired by Brenda Shanahan,
Member of Parliament and CFUW Member
This panel of accomplished women will share their experiences in leadership, what they have learned
about it, and what they see as the challenges and opportunities for women taking on leadership roles in
the future.
Notable Women 100 th Anniversary Banquet
A wonderful meal, an occasion to celebrate the 100 outstanding CFUW Notable women and an
opportunity to socialize.

contribute to CFUW fellowships but to hear an inspiring presentation by a past
award winner.

Topic: Building a Museum for Everyone
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is built for everyone. To provide an enriching, satisfying, and
inspirational experience for all of our visitors, accessibility and inclusion are integrated and offered as

parallel experiences. Not only are our exhibition experiences award winning for inclusive design and
accessibility, but all of our projects are built from the outset with these principles considered.
Natalie Rogers was awarded the 2006 Ruth Binnie Fellowship to support her Masters studies in Interior
Design at the University of Manitoba. Prior to her Masters, she obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual)
and a Diploma in Heritage Resources from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Congratulations on your nomination! We have organized some very special events for you to help
celebrate the contributions you have made to CFUW as we reach our 100th year.
First, you may register as a delegate for the AGM and Conference if you choose to do so and follow the
same registration process as other delegates.
You are not, however, required to register as a delegate for the whole AGM and Conference in order to
attend the Notable Women Reception, Opening Reception, Banquet or tours. There is no cost to you to
attend the Notable Women Reception on August 15 afternoon (an event open to you only i.e., no
“guests”) from 3:00pm to 4:00pm, nor the following open reception. However, you will be responsible
for all other meals that are normally included in the delegate registration fee.

Conference Tours
Booking and payment for selected tours should be included with your registration for the CFUW AGM
2019. There may be a delay in processing charges for some tours until minimum numbers have been
reached. Although every effort will be made to offer all tours listed, if the minimum number of
registrations is not received by July 12, 2019, tours may be cancelled. Cost of tours is per person and
companions are very welcome to register also.
Transportation costs are included in the price of the tours. Transportation will be by commercial tour
bus or by taxi. Tours will run rain or shine. The gathering place for the tours is located beside the hotel
reception desk in the lobby of the Fort Garry Hotel. Please arrive 15 minutes before the tour start times
noted below.

1. Come Walk in Nellie McClung’s Footsteps 9:00am – 4:00pm
It is no accident that in January 1916, Manitoba women were the first in
Canada to win the right to vote and hold political office. The province was
home to one of the most famous Canadian suffragists for 35 years. Today,
the legacy of this pioneering activist, Nellie McClung, is kept alive in the
small southern town of Manitou, population 840. Visit one of only two of
Nellie’s homes in Canada that is open to visitors. Nellie met and married
Robert Wesley McClung in 1896, wrote her Canadian best seller Sowing Seeds in Danny in 1908, and
launched her national career as a brilliant speaker and champion of women’s and human rights. The
tour also includes lunch and a tour of the historic Opera House.

2. Prairie Settlement Tour 9:00am – 4:30pm
Join us for the Prairie Settlements bus tour to Portage la Prairie. The
first stop is a guided tour of one of 50 Hutterite colonies west of
Winnipeg. Learn about their role in a communal lifestyle, tour the
homestead and meet with some of the women who are members
of the colony. Interact about their role in a closed community and
the variations of their society. Purchase homemade goods and
enjoy a full course lunch. The second stop will be a tour of Fort La
Reine Museum, home to 28 unique heritage buildings which
illustrate the early lifestyles of prairie communities. They will leave
you breathless.

3. Royal Canadian Mint 9:15am – 12:15pm
Have you ever wondered how money is made? Join us for an interactive
guided tour featuring displays and a behind-the-scenes look at the Royal
Canadian Mint’s state of the art facilities in Winnipeg. Every Canadian
coin is made here, as well as many foreign coins. Billions each year!

4. West Exchange Walking Tour 1:00pm – 4:00pm
Visit Red River College, showcasing both heritage and innovative
green building designs. The tour highlights the history and
architecture west of Main Street.

5. City Bus Tour of Winnipeg 1:30pm – 3:30pm
This narrated tour of Winnipeg highlights leading sites, attractions and
landmarks, as well as providing interesting information about its origins,
future, famous people, institutions and achievements. A must for first
time visitors!

6. Walking Tour to the Manitoba Legislative Building 2:00pm – 4:00pm
This narrated tour will focus on the building’s history and neo-classical style
of architecture featured in the building. Come and see architectural
examples of the mathematical Fibonacci Sequence, Golden Ratio and
Sacred Geometry, and the symbolism present in such statues such as the
goddess Europa, Lady Manitoba closely representing the goddesses Ishtar
and Deneter, and the two entwined women symbolizing the Red and
Assiniboine rivers, the sphinx and outside the building a larger than life
statue of Louis Riel.

7. Folklorama 7:30pm – 11:30pm
Experience the energy and excitement of the largest and
longest running multicultural event of its kind in the
world! Traditional meals and lively performances by
local, national and international entertainers are
featured. Two pavilions will be visited. Cultural meal,
beverage and dessert are included.

WEDNESDAY, August 14 th, 2019 Tours #8- 14
8. St. Boniface – La Francophonie 9:45am – 4:45pm
The largest French speaking community in Western Canada, St. Boniface’s Fort Gibraltar takes you back
200 years to the period of the Voyageurs and the fur trade in the Northwest. We will dine in the elegant
and romantic 1900s atmosphere at Resto Gare and Train Bar Bistro. The restaurant is a St. Boniface
landmark, located in the old railway station with an adjoining restored dining car.
After lunch, we will see the beautiful St. Boniface Cathedral, the oldest
cathedral in Western Canada. The cemetery features the grave of Louis
Riel, famous Metis leader, and founder of Manitoba.
Next stop is St. Boniface University and then to St. Boniface Museum,
the largest remaining traditional oak log structure in North America and
the first hospital in the Canadian west.

9. Steinbach Mennonite Heritage Village 9:30am – 4:30pm
Explore a turn of the century Russian Mennonite
street village. Taste traditional ethnic fare and
explore a classic Mennonite house barn and fully
operational Dutch windmill. View historic heirloom
treasurers, some brought from Poland and Russia,
and enjoy an authentic Mennonite lunch.

10. Canadian Museum for Human Rights 9:45am – 12:45pm
The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will take you on a journey of
education and inspiration unlike anything you have experienced before.
The guided tour focuses on the museum’s innovative exhibits, human
rights stories of courage and actions, as well as the building’s
architecture.
Cost $40 Includes transportation and tour. Minimum 25, maximum 125,
in groups of 25 each.
Lunch is available at the museum at your own expense.
11. Royal Winnipeg Ballet School 9:30am – 12:30pm
For 80 years, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School has been inspiring young
artists and supporting them in the pursuit of their goals. The school is
located in historic downtown Winnipeg and is home to the more than
1,500 students annually who make up the Professional and Recreational
Division of the school. You will enjoy a tour, view a rehearsal and lunch.

12. Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) 10:00am – 11:30am
Established in 1912 when a group of Winnipeg leaders recognized “the
civilizing effects of art.”, the WAG was born, becoming the first civic
gallery in Canada. Exhibitions and programs are at the heart of the WAG,
and over the years, the Gallery has established itself as one of Canada’s
leading art museums, organizing exhibitions of local, national and
international artists. The Winnipeg Art Gallery has had a long and
continuous commitment to the collection, research, exhibition, and

13. Winnipeg General Strike Tour 2:15pm – 5:00pm
This year is the 100th anniversary of Winnipeg’s General
Strike. The event gave rise to the modern union movement,
collective bargaining and a living wage. Two years after the
strike, Canada mandated its first minimum wage. This showed
how people came together, recognizing they can change a
government when they are bound together to make a
difference. The tour takes you near Hell’s Alley where is the
first significant monument commemorating the strike, and is followed by several other sites which will
bring the story to life.

A walking tour dedicated to the courage, plights, challenges and recognition of women. Get the goods
on wild women who challenged the status quo and made history, changing the future for those who
followed. Learn about pioneer Annie McDermot, suffragette Nellie McClung, and Cora Hind, the first
female journalist in Western Canada, as well as the women who participated in the Winnipeg General
Strike.

For 80 years, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School has been inspiring young artists and supporting them in
the pursuit of their goals. The school is located in historic downtown Winnipeg and is home to the more
than 1,500 students annually who make up the Professional and Recreational Division of the school. You
will enjoy a tour, view a rehearsal and lunch.

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights will take you on a journey of education and inspiration unlike

18. Hermetic Code Walking Tour 12:30pm – 3:00pm
Unlocking one of Manitoba’s Greatest Secrets at the Manitoba Legislative Building. Dr. Frank Albo takes
you along, step by step, as he reveals the building to be a modern reconstruction of King Solomon’s
Temple and the secret traditions of Freemasonry hidden in plain view. Dress according to the weather as
the first 15 minutes is outside the building. Photo ID may be needed to enter the building.

This palatial house was designed for hardware merchant J. H. Ashdown and
constructed between 1912 and 1913. The house was renovated for use as a
restaurant in 2002 and has been recognized with a Conservation Award from

Nonsuch ship was originally built as a merchant ship in 1650. The
replica seen here was built to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the
Hudson’s Bay Company.
