On behalf of the ADHD Founda on and our conference sponsors; Equazen, Shire, QB Tech, Morgan Founda on and Witherslack Group , I would like to welcome you all to our fi h annual conference for professionals working in the field of ADHD and ND in the medical, educa on and social care sectors.

The ADHD Founda on conference is now the largest, most diverse and inclusive annual event of its kind in Europe. This year we welcome delegates and speakers from the USA, Brazil, Spain, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Iceland and Sweden as well as from across the United kingdom. This reflects the wider partnerships we have with organisa ons across the world. We are privileged to be learning from the leading clinicians, researchers and professionals from educa on and social care who are presen ng at this year’s conference and of course some of our service users, who will be speaking and performing for delegates.

Our conference theme this year is ‘ADHD in the 21st Century’ reflec ng the rapid changes and innova on we are witnessing in service provision and in technology. Our Conference this year also sees the launch of the first UK Na onal Disease Impact Report for ADHD—’A life me Lost or a life me saved’, which has been sent to every MP, NHS Commissioner and Local Authority in the UK. The report is the culmina on of two years work involving several ADHD Chari es and Shire. Together with the ADHD Manifesto, ’A call to ac on,’ we aim to influence policy and provision and the introduc on of a na onal strategy for ADHD. The report calls for adherence to NICE guidelines in the best prac ce of care and be er outcomes in health, educa on and life chances for those living with and affected by ADHD.

The ADHD Founda on’s mission, vision and values are also evident in our support for research projects at a number of Universi es across the UK. We are par cularly excited about our research partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, Exeter University , the European Brain Council and the European Union.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to the professionals from eighteen ADHD agencies in the voluntary sector, and pay special thanks to ADHD Norfolk, ADHD Richmond, The Sco sh ADHD Coali on, ADHD Solu ons of Leicester, ADD NI and ADHD NI from the north of Ireland, ADHD Ac on. Together with ADHD Support groups across the UK, we are delighted to see so much collabora on in which integrity and shared goals have enabled us to achieve so much together . I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our 5th Na onal ADHD Conference.

The Conference has grown in strength year on year and in 2017, we have brought together leading experts in the field

of Child and Adult ADHD, ND and mental health to help us in our vision. As the leading ADHD charity in the United

Kingdom, we aim to influence policy and provision of services across the country in what is becoming an increasingly

challenging climate in terms of commissioning and resources. Of par cular concern to us is the lack of adult ADHD

services for children to transi on to at 16 years of age and the cost implica ons to mental health services if this need

isn't met in a planned and intelligent way.

This year has seen the development of new successful partnerships with Exeter University, Liverpool John Moores

University, Witherslack Group and Morgan Founda on. Future partnerships with Mersey Care Founda on NHS Trust

will see us developing the first Lifespan service for ADHD in the UK.

This is an exci ng me for those of us that work in the field of ADHD both in the Adult and Children se ngs and

our vision for a fully fledged clinical service incorpora ng diagnosis, prescribing and psychological therapies will be

realised by the end of this year. All of this would not be possible without the support and dedica on from our

Trustees and staff at the Founda on and I would like to thank them for their efforts.

I look forward to mee ng you at our Conference and sharing ideas that would help us to shape and advance the field

Partners in the project:

As part of an on‐going commitment to pa ents and families with ADHD, The ADHD Founda on, working in

partnership with pa ent led ADHD Chari es and funded by Shire, have collaborated with researchers to

produce a disease impact report to inform NHS Commissioners about the cost to the NHS, Educa on and

Social care of undiagnosed and untreated ADHD.

With compe ng demands on resources, commissioners need informa on about the impact ADHD and its

co‐occurring condi ons has on the health, well being and life chances of those living with and affected by

ADHD. The Report will be sent out during the week of the ADHD Founda on UK Conference to every MP,

NHS and Local Authority commissioner so they can make responsible and informed decisions about the

care provided to the ADHD popula on. This will also coincide with a na onal le er wri ng campaign by

service users of all ADHD agencies in the UK. This also forms part of a wider campaign to ask Government

to design and implement a na onal strategy for ADHD and introduce an ADHD Act of Parliament.

A na onal call to ac on...

The ADHD Founda on is proud to announce our partnership with the Witherslack Group, the UK’s leading provider of year

round special educa on provision and residen al care for children with addi onal needs such as ADHD, Au sm and social

and emo onal difficul es.

As part of their corporate and social responsibility agenda, the Witherslack Group and the ADHD Founda on collaborate on

training and par cipa on events for professionals and parents across the UK. Our plans over the next three years include

offering a range of training events for those in the field of social care, commissioning, mental health, youth jus ce and

educa on, focusing upon how they can improve their services to support the most vulnerable children and families.

From 2018, we will stage four affordable and accessible conferences specifically for parents every year in different loca ons

across the UK, offering parents the opportunity to come together and meet with and talk to experts. Our objec ve is to offer

knowledge and skills to parents about how they can best support their children’s learning, achievement and psychological

development so that they can achieve their poten al and make a successful transi on into adulthood, further educa on,

training and employment.

In partnership with Liverpool City Council and Equazen Ltd, manufacturers of Omega 3 supplements, 400 children and young people from schools across Merseyside, were involved in a project about raising awareness of ‘invisible disabili es’ such as ADHD and Au sm. Led by St Oswald’s Primary Liverpool, schools delivered assemblies which emphasised the gi s, talents and abili es of all children. The message was to take a ‘strength based approach’ focusing upon what we ‘can do’ rather than what we ‘cant’ and that ‘I CAN is more important that IQ’. Children signed the umbrellas with ‘My Superpower is…..’ and these were suspended above Church Alley in Liverpool city centre.

The Umbrella Project is also the name of our Comic Relief Funded therapies service and came about when young people at the ADHD Founda on started calling themselves the ‘Alphabet Kids’ because they had so many le ers a er their name such as ADHD, ASC, LD and SPD. They agreed that the term ’Umbrella Kids’ sounded more posi ve as the range of neurodevelopmental condi ons they had were ’umbrella’ terms for a range of ‘differences’.

The art installa on went viral across the world with 30 million views on TV news, social media and na onal press and at one point was the most photographed street on Instagram across the en re world! The installa on spawned copy cat displays in Argen na, Spain, Dubai, Romania and the Czech Republic. Special thanks to Liverpool City Council Mayors Office and Equazen Ltd for making this possible.

Dr Tony Lloyd Ph.D, Chief Execu ve of the ADHD Founda on

Born and raised in Anfield, Liverpool. Tony studied philosophy before training as a psychotherapist. He worked for

several years in public educa on as child and adolescent psychotherapist. Tony Lloyd is the lead researcher in the

ADHD study, Coherence Training in Children with ADHD; Cogni ve Func ons and Behavioural Changes, and co‐author of

Using emWave Technology For Children With ADHD. Tony has also published frequently in the sector press and co

authored EU Documents on transi on from CAMHS to AMHS and the UK ADHD Disease Impact Report ‘A life me lost or

a life me saved’. Tony was recently nominated in the Times Newspaper’s UK top 100 LGBT Execu ves for 2017 in

recogni on of his work at the ADHD Founda on.

Dr Kuben Naidoo, Clinical Director of Services for Se on and Kirkby, and Chair of the

ADHD Founda on Kuben is a Consultant Psychiatrist working in the Liverpool area. He is the Clinical Director of services for Se on and

Kirkby. Kuben has been running an ADHD service for the past 9 years in Se on and this led to his involvement with the

ADHD Founda on where Kuben currently serve as Chair. He has an interest in service development, par cularly

Transi on of care for young adults with ADHD.

Professor Susan Young, Clinical Senior Lecturer in Forensic Clinical Psychology in the Centre for Mental Health, Imperial College London Professor Susan Young is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Forensic Clinical Psychology in the Centre for Mental Health,

Imperial College London, and Visi ng Professor at Rekjavik University. She is a Honorary Consultant at Broadmoor

Hospital and Director of Forensic Research and Development for West London Mental Health Trust. She par cipated in

the Bri sh Associa on of Psychopharmacology ADHD Consensus Mee ngs (2007;2013) and the Na onal Ins tute for

Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) ADHD Clinical Guideline Development Group (2008;2013). She is President of the

UK ADHD Partnership and Vice President of the UK Adult ADHD Network. Professor Young has published three books.

Her work has been translated into Icelandic, Hebrew, Danish, Spanish, Polish, Chinese, Japanese and Swedish. She was

consulted by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and the South Florida Behavioural Health

Network to develop enhanced service delivery and care coordina on for mentally disordered offenders.

Professor Edmund Sonuga‐ Barke, Professor of Psychology, Psychiatry & Neuroscience at the

Ins tute of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience Kings College London

Edmund also has visi ng Chairs at Ghent University, Aarhus University and the University of Sussex. He is the Editor‐in‐

Chief of the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. Mo vated by his own experience of growing up as a child with

dyslexia and a en on problems, his research focusses on improving the lives of children and adolescents with

neurodevelopmental disorders. To this end he employs basic developmental science approaches to study the

pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental condi ons; their underlying gene c and environmental risks, media ng brain

mechanisms and developmental outcomes. In 2016 Professor Sonuga‐Barke was elected a fellow of The Academy of

Medical Sciences. He is a husband (Funke), a father (Pascale & Julien), a lifelong Derby FC supporter, a soul music

aficionado and a Roman Catholic

Dr Madeline Marczak Principal Child Clinical Psychologist and a senior Lecturer in Paren ng and

early Years at Prestwich Hospital & Salford University IAPT Madeline also works the specialist 0‐5 CAMHS service in Manchester as well as being opera onal lead for 0‐5 for North

West IAPT. Madeline is an accredited AVIGuk Advanced Supervisor and AVIGuk Board member and sits on the AVIGuk

teaching and accredita on commi ee. Madeline has a keen interest in suppor ng the sustainable implementa on of

Video Interac on Guidance (VIG) and Incredible Years in perinatal and early years se ngs.

Speaker Profiles

Dr Emily Leproust, Chief Execu ve of Twist Bioscience USA Emily serves as CEO, co‐founder and Director of Twist Bioscience. As as early pioneer in the high throughput synthesis and sequencing of synthe c DNA, Dr Leproust is disrup ng the process of gene synthesis to enable exponen al growth of synthe c biology applica ons in mul ple fields including medicine, DNA data storage, agricultural biology and industrialised chemicals. In 2015 Emily was named in Foreign Policy’s 100 leading global thinkers for fast tracking the building blocks of life, and Fast Company named her one of the most crea ve people in business for synthesising DNA faster than ever. Prior to establishing Twist Bioscience, Emily held escala ng posts in Agilent Technologies where she architected the successful sure select product line that lowered the cost of sequencing and elucidated dozens of Mendelian diseases. Emily has published over 34 peer reviewed papers on the applica on of synthe c DNA and is the author of numerous patents.

Professor Anita Thaper, Academic Lead of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry sec on at the

Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences at Cardiff University Anita also directs the developmental disorders group within the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric gene cs and Genomics. Her research focuses on the origins, development and complica ons in childhood neurodevelopmental disorders, focussing on ADHD. Currently funded research inves ga ons focus on the natural history of ADHD & Au sms into adult life, birth pa erns and its gene c links with neurodevelopmental disorders and the contribu on of gene c and early life exposures to ADHD and ASD trajectories.

Anita trained in medicine, psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Cardiff and became the first Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Wales in 1999. Anita also established a ter ary service for ‘transi ons for 15 to 25 years old with neurodevelopmental condi ons. Anita served as the lead editor of the authorita ve Ru er’s Textbook of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. In 2015 Anita was awarded the Presidents Medal from the Royal College of Psychiatry; the Ruane Prize in 2015 from The Brain & Behaviour Research Founda on USA and in 2017 was awarded a CBE for services to child and adolescent psychiatry.

Dr Bill Colley, Independent Consultant and Co‐Founder of the Sco sh ADHD Coali on

Dr Colley has been a member of the Na onal Au sm Strategy Reference Group since 2010 and also sits as an educa onal expert on the Board of UKAP. He is an educa onal advisor to ’Mindroom’ and to Perth & Kinross ADHD Support Group and a Trustee of SWAN—the Sco sh Women’s Au sm Network. He has worked as a service manager for ASN at Local Authority level, as the Head Teacher of an independent residen al special school. Bill holds post graduate qualifica ons in Asperger’s syndrome and in Social, Emo onal and Behavioural Difficul es. Bill acts as an expert witness / advocate in cases involving school exclusion, ADHD and au sm spectrum disorders. He is trained in administering the Au sm Diagnos c Observa on Schedule (ADOS), the Au sm Diagnos c Interview and DIVA.2.

Dr Peter Mason, Consultant Psychiatrist, Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Founda on Trust

Dr Peter Mason is a consultant psychiatrist with Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS Founda on Trust. He works full me with Adults with ADHD over a large geographical area including Liverpool, Wirral, Cheshire and Bolton and developed the Adult ADHD Service in 2007. He has published extensively on the outcomes of trea ng adults with ADHD .

Dr Ruairi Gallagher Consultant Community Paediatrician at Alder Hey Hospital Dr Gallagher graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2001. He has been prac sing in the field of paediatrics for fi een years and is a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Ruairi gained his PhD in 2008 from the University of Liverpool, assessing drug reac ons in children, and has subspecialised in the field of community paediatrics. Dr Mason & Dr Gallagher both serve as Trustees of the Founda on are take part today in our ‘Ask The Experts’ panel

Dr Jeremy Felleck, Consultant Community Paediatrician, Wirral

Jeremy gained his medical degree from the University of No ngham in 1989 and his paediatric training ini ally in No ngham and Derby. Jeremy completed his training in Liverpool including a 1 year research project into the outcomes of meningococcal disease in childhood. In 2001, he was appointed a consultant community paediatrician in Wirral. Jeremy is the ADHD lead for the department working collabora vely with our ADHD nurses and colleagues in CAMHS to develop a joint care pathway. Jeremy’s eldest son (now 23) has ADHD and has taught him more about ADHD than any training programme.

Speaker Profiles

Dr Astrid Janssens, Senior Research Fellow at University of Exeter Medical School Dr Janssens is a psychologist and anthropologist who completed her PhD in Medical Sciences at the University of Antwerp in Belgium in 2010. The focus of her research ac vi es extend from the study of pa erns of service use, access of services, evalua on of service organisa on and delivery, and the development of service models of interven on directly with families or indirectly through prac oners working with children. Astrid has broad experience with a variety of health services research methods. Her methodological interest includes mixed method studies, qualita ve work with young people and service providers., Delphi surveys, surveillance, epidemiological studies and appraisal and use of pa ent reported outcomes.

Dr Joe Johnson, Consultant Psychiatrist and lead Adult ADHD Clinician at NHS 5BP, and Trustee of the ADHD Founda on Joe has worked as a general adult psychiatrist within Northwest Boroughs Trust for the past twelve years. He was involved in se ng up the transi onal and adult ADHD service in 2008, the first of its kind within the NorthWest Boroughs Trust. It has since been developed as a Trust Wide Adult ADHD service. He is the northwest lead for the na onal organisa on UKAAN (UK Adult ADHD Network). He is currently involved in a research project using cogni ve remedia on in adult ADHD, funded by the University of Manchester. He is ac vely involved in teaching and training and was the Post Graduate Clinical Tutor for over 6 years. Dr Johnson also leads the Trust ECT service and has worked as the mental health team at HMP Risley for six years where he developed a prison adult ADHD service.

Eleanor Wright RGN, Paediatric Nurse Commissioner Wirral Community Founda on Trust Elly Wright is a Paediatric Nurse working in both Arrowe park Hospital and Alder hey Children’s Hospital before becoming a health Visitor working within Wirral Community Founda on Trust. Elly worked alongside commissioning services then returned to clinical work within the field of complex needs and leads the 0‐19 service. Wirral have recently changed their ADHD pathways and are evalua ng the changes in pa ent journey.

Dr Jodi Gomez, Clinical Advisor at QB Tech Before joining the team at QB Tech, Jodi worked in private prac ce as a Clinical Psychologist in Trinidad, West Indies, where she specialised in the psycho educa onal assessment of children experiencing difficul es in the domains of cogni ve, developmental, behavioural, socio‐emo onal, adap ve and / or educa onal func oning. Jodie relocated to the UK in search of more progressive methods in clinical prac ce, par cularly in the diagnosis of ADHD. Through this, Jodi discovered QB Test and now works as part of the UK team at QB Tech. Jodi will be leading a lunch me prac cal session for conference delegates to gain some hands on experience of using QB Test and QB Check.

Professor Tamsin Ford, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, University of Exeter and lead researcher on the ‘CATCH US’ study inves ga ng the experience of young people transi oning from paediatric to adult ADHD services in England. Dr Ford is an epidemiologist. Her academic work focuses on the effec veness of interven ons and the efficiency of services in rela on to the mental health of children and young people, with a par cular focus on the interface between educa on and health systems.. Tamsin completed her PhD at the ins tute of psychiatry while supported by the Wellcome Clinical Training Fellowship, and moved her MRC Science Fellowship to Exeter in 2007, where she set up and leads the Child Mental Health Research Group. Tamsin is also an honorary consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at Devon Partnership Trust.

Nicki Jennings, Educa onal Trainer for SEMH Schools and founder of Giraffe Training Nicki began her career in SEN Educa on in 2001 and in 2013 became the SEMH County Trainer for Kent. Nicki established her own training company in 2016 and promotes ‘The Wellbeing Toolkit’ for use in SEND which includes Mindfullness, Lego Therapy and Team Teach.

Caroline Hounsell, Director of Partnerships and Product Development at Mental Health First Aid

England (MHFA) Caroline was one of the first MHFA England instructors to be trained and joined the na onal MHFA England training team in 2007. During her me at MHFA England, Caroline has been involved in the design, content development and wri ng across a range of MHFA courses, including Youth Mental Health First Aid, Armed Forces MHFA and Higher Educa on MHFA. An accredited Bri sh Associa on of Counselling Psychotherapist (BACP) qualified in 2006, Caroline draws on the experience gained through her private prac ce to further develop her knowledge and skills as a mental health professional. Caroline is also a regular speaker at conferences and is an all round advocate of Mental Health First Aid.

Robbie Seaman RMN, Manager of Adult ADHD service for NTW Founda on NHS Trust. The NTW Founda on Trust Adult ADHD service covers Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Robbie qualified as a mental health nurse in 2000 and has worked and managed a number of mental health services, addic on services and has worked with the family Drug & alcohol Court as a special advisor. Robbie has presented at several conferences on leading services through change and developing nurse based clinics.

Dr Madeleine Portwood, Clinical Director at Witherslack Group

Madeleine is the Clinical Director for the Witherslack Group and the Educa on Advisor for the Dyspraxia Founda on. A qualified teacher and prac sing Psychologist for 25 years, Madeleine specialises in Neurodevelopmental Disorders: Au sm Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia, Early Years Development and Educa on, Sensory Impairment, Social, Emo onal and Behavioural Difficul es (SEBD) and Children Looked A er. She has published a number of books. ‘Developmental Dyspraxia: A prac cal manual for parents and professionals’ sold more than 100,000 copies. Madeleine has advised on a number of television documentaries and films, including ‘Pablo’, which won the category award at the Cannes Film Fes val in 2015. Her Child Development Programme has been introduced widely in the UK and has been validated by C4EO as a model of ‘good prac ce’

Diane Kashrabi, Na onal FASD Link Coordinator, FASD Trust Charity Diane works as the Na onal FASD Trust Link Coordinator, her role includes coordina ng the network of FASD Link Groups across the UK. The Link groups provide support, advice and informa on to individuals affected by FASD; including parents, carers and children. Diane provides FASD training and presenta ons to parents, carers, teachers, social works and other professionals. Diane also hosts the local Merseyside FASD Link Group. Previously Diane has worked extensively as a safety advisor, trainer and volunteer coordinator in the public, private and voluntary sectors. Diane is the mother of two adopted children.

Teresa Jennings RMN, CAMHS ADHD Nurse Specialist and Medical Prescriber Teresa is a Mental health Nurse working in CAAMHS since 1997, ini ally in inpa ent services where she trained in DBT (Dialec cal behaviour Therapy) running groups and working individually with young people. In 2006, Teresa moved to working within community CAMHS services as an ADHD Nurse Specialist. A er Undertaking further training in psychopharmacology and Independent Supplementary Prescribing, Teresa has now been working as an independent prescriber since 2010. Teresa lives and works in the South East of England and has personal experience of ADHD through her son who was diagnosed with the condi on.

Dr Antoine e van Heerden Developmental Paediatrician Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Dr van Heerden is currently employed as a Developmental Paediatrician at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Founda on Trust in Liverpool. With over twenty two years experience in the field of neonatal medicine, general and developmental paediatrics, Antoine e brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team at Alder Hey Hospital. Antoine e has a special interest in managing children and young people with complex health and severe learning disability, inves ga ng unexplained global developmental delay in pre school children and the diagnosis and management of neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and au sm. Antoine e provides cover at the Rainbow Centre child Protec on Unit at Alder hey Hospital for the last thirteen years and is one of the specialist team of paediatricians responsible for examining children and young people who have been subjected to abuse.

Emma Weaver BA PG Dip Early Years Co‐ordinator at the ADHD Founda on Emma is one of the newest members of the team at the ADHD Founda on, working with nurse, social worker and therapist colleagues and leading on our early years strategy. Emma began her career as an Advanced early Years English teacher and worked in Wirral Children’s Centres as a Family Support Worker, specialising in suppor ng children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and au sm. Emma joined the third sector working Au sm Ini a ves and obtained a PG Cer ficate in Early Years Professional Status before joining the ADHD Founda on where she has trained to become a VIG Early years prac oner as part of the IAPT Programme. Emma is now the Founda ons’ co‐ordinator for 0 to 5’s offering targeted support to families across Merseyside.

Dr Anastasia Bem Consultant Paediatrician at Norwich University Hospital Trust Dr Bem specialises in community paediatrics and neurodisability at Norwich University Hospital. Her specialist interests are sleep disorders, epilepsy, congenital sensory neuronal hearing loss and neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and au sm. Dr Bem’s research interests include new medicines for the treatment of ADHD. Dr Bem is presen ng the lunch me symposia today on behalf of Shire.

Colin Foley BA PGCE MA, Na onal Director of Training Services at ADHD Founda on Colin is the lead trainer across the en re UK and Ireland for the ADHD Founda on as well as offering training programmes for teachers in English speaking interna onal schools. Colin joined the Founda on having worked in secondary educa on for over 25 years. As well as serving eight years in senior leadership, Colin was also responsible for professional development of teachers and is a qualified teacher trainer, suppor ng teachers in developing best prac ce and prepara on for OFSTED inspec ons. Colin provides training on a range of learning needs and has a par cular interest in how mental health and neurodevelopment disorders impact on a ainment . He works with schools enabling them adapt their prac ce to reduce anxiety and mental health problems for children as a means to change behaviours, enabling the child to integrate fully into school based learning,. Colin is also a qualified Mental Health First Aid Trainer for the youth an adult programmes.

Professor Phil Asherson MB BS MRCPsych PhD, Professor of Molecular Psychiatry, MRC Social

Gene c & Developmental Psychiatry Centre at the Ins tute of Psychiatry at King’s College London Phil earned his medical degree from the Royal London Hospital and his Doctoral Degree from The University of Wales. He was an MRC Clinical research fellow in the Department of Psychological Medicine & Ins tute of Medical Gene cs at University of wales College of Medicine in Cardiff, where he worked on molecular gene c studies of schizophrenia. His current work focuses on clinical quan ta ve and molecular gene c studies of ADHD across the lifespan. He is President of the UK Adult ADHD network (UKAAN), a professional network that aims to support clinical research, educa on and service provision for adults with ADHD. His current research is concerned with ADHD in young offenders.

. Fintan O’Regan, Behaviour and Learning Consultant

Fintan O’Regan is one of the leading behaviour and learning experts in the UK and Europe. He was the Headteacher of the Centre Academy from 1996 ‐2002, the first specialist school in the UK for students between the ages of 7‐19 specialising issues related to ADHD, ASD and ODD. Fintan is currently the Vice Chairman of UKAP and a member of the European ADHD Alliance. Fintan has wri en a number of books and published ar cles on the subject of ADHD and Behaviour issues. Fintan’s presenta on will provide delegates with a range of strategies designed to achieve outstanding outcomes for children and young people with a range of neurodevelopmental condi ons.

Melanie Gill, Psychologist and Forensic Consultant Melanie Gill is a Brighton based psychologist and forensic consultant to policy makers and ins tu ons.. Melanie is a forensic assessor with her own prac ce, working on complex cases in both private and public law in the family jus ce system throughout the UK, Melanie is highly specialised and trained in the evidence based assessment of both children and adults. There are few psychologists or psychiatrists trained in the range of assessment methods that she u lises in the UK. Dr Gill is an expert in a achment science and assessment which brings the highly specific developmental back stories of children and adults to professionals in their efforts to provide support.

Michael Webster, Regional Director for The Witherslack Group Michael qualified in educa on with a degree in Educa onal Studies and Research which led him to work in the field of special educa onal needs. In the last twenty three years, Michael has held a number of roles including Head Teacher and Quality Assurance Manager. Michael is currently the Regional Director for Witherslack in the North and oversees the educa on and welfare of children with addi onal needs who are taught and board at Witherslack residen al homes and schools. His passion is around developing quality systems that the inclusion of children in schools and support tangible outcomes for young people. Michael lives in Derbyshire and has two grown up children. He is a keen walker and traveller.

Angela Samata MBE, Award winning documentary maker and parent of children

with ADHD and Ben Samata Angela is the mum of two young men both with ADHD and is joined today by her son Ben who was diagnosed with ADHD at only 4 years of age such was the severity of his ADHD. Angela is a reless campaigner for be er mental health services and was awarded the MBE for her services to mental health following the screening of her documentary about the suicide of her husband Mark twelve years ago. Angela is also an accomplished art curator having worked at the Walker Art Gallery and produced exhibits at several events for well known ar sts. Angela and her son Ben will address the conference today as a family talking about how ADHD has impacted on their family.

Marcus Wilton, Young person with ADHD and Au sm Marcus has been involved with the Founda on for several years. Marcus is currently educated in alterna ve provision in

Manchester that caters to his specific needs. He is an ICT genius and an ar culate 10 year old who has spoken at a conference before and is very excited about speaking to delegates at the UK Na onal Conference for ADHD & ND here is Liverpool. Please offer him a very warm welcome.

Professor Philip Calder, Professor of Nutri onal Immunology in the faculty of Medicine, University of

Southampton Philip’s main research interest is in the metabolism and func onality of fa y acids and the role of Omega 3. He has received several awards for his work including the ESPEN Cuthbertson Award for 2008 and the Danone Interna onal Prize for Nutri on in 2016. He was President The Interna onal Society for the Study of Fa y Acids and lipids (2009‐2012) and Chair of the Scien fic Commi ee of ESPEN (2012‐2016. Philip was Editor in Chief of the Bri sh Journal of Nutri on 2006‐2013). He is currently President of The Nutri on Society.

ADHD Par cipa on and the Arts The ADHD Founda on has collaborated with several agencies and ar sts including the Arts Council, to raise

awareness of ADHD and contribute to the growing na onal conversa on in the ADHD community about how we

challenge s gma and increase knowledge and improve services for the ADHD popula on. Most notable was our

Umbrella Project but also the UK tour of the award winning theatrical produc on ‘Declara on’ by Art with Heart

that offered dynamic community engagement and training for professionals as part of the project. There was also the

BBC Documentary featuring our patron Rory Bremner on his journey to understanding how ADHD has impacted on his

life. There was the ‘Spoken Word’ event by Ar st Rebekah Dean in London and the work of ar st Jacki Cairns, who is

exhibi ng at our conference this year. We have plans afoot for another documentary with Channel 4 and Produc on

Company Wall to Wall Ltd.

Each year at conference we have a group of young people

entertaining us with a drama performance which pro‐

vides a welcome change of tempo following lunch. This

year we are joined by students from Rainhill Arts College

in Merseyside who will performing a short play about

some well known public figures!

The ADHD Founda on has wri en and co produced

several short plays by Colin Foley on the theme of ADHD,

invisible disabili es and how the arts provide a medium

for so many children and adults with ADHD to express

themselves and use the arts therapeu cally.

What is the ADHD Friendly Schools Award?

ADHD Friendly Schools has been developed by the ADHD Founda on to support schools to enable more children with ADHD to have a posi ve educa onal experience, improve outcomes, resilience and mental health. Working in collabora on with the ADHD Founda on, schools will commit to enshrining the six key pledges below into the daily life of their school.

The 6 ADHD Friendly School Pledges.

1) We pledge to work with the ADHD Foundation to

provide an ADHD training session for our teachers

and/ or parents ( twilight sessions available in the

North West of England only.)

2) We pledge to provide regular opportunities for all

learners with ADHD to have access to physical

activity and exercise during the school day.

3) We pledge to provide opportunities for all learners

with ADHD to learn self calming strategies, for example, belly breathing ,progressive muscle relaxation

or mindfulness.

4) We pledge to provide tactile resources in every classroom.

5) We pledge to produce a display for the whole school and hold one assembly to celebrate the achievements

of people living with ADHD.

6) We pledge to set up a Parent/Carer’s ADHD Support Group.

Congratula ons to the first school to achieve ADHD Friendly Schools status: Wilds Lodge School in Oakham, Leicestershire. Wilds Lodge School is an independent specialist boarding and day provision for boys with social, emo onal and behavioural difficul es aged be‐tween 5 and 18. All of the students at the school have a Statement of Special Educa onal Needs (SEN) or Educa on Health and Care Plan (EHCP). It was estab‐lished in 2007 and aims to place an equal emphasis on the educa‐onal, social and psychological development of our students.

The Warrington Behaviour Project

“The best outcomes for children with ADHD are achieved when parents and teachers work together”

The ADHD Founda on has been working in partnership with Warrington Borough Council on an exci ng and innova ve project

en tled, “The Warrington Behaviour project.” Twenty schools across the borough volunteered to support their learner’s with

ADHD, ASC and other behavioural needs through a dual approach in which staff teams were trained in understanding and

managing ADHD and ASC. SENDCOs and Pastoral Staff collaborated with The ADHD Founda on to provide our unique ADHD

Parents and Carers Skills training programme to iden fied families. The results have been overwhelmingly posi ve. Of the 471

professionals trained, 72% said that their confidence level in suppor ng learner’s with ADHD and ASC was either “poor” or

“average” at the start of the project. By the end, 95% of respondents said that their confidence level was now either “good” or

“very good.”

As an example of the impact of the work of the Founda on, Liverpool John Moores University recently inves gated the impact

on families in a randomised sample of 107 families who had worked with the ADHD Founda on over the previous year and found

that 70% of the families involved reported that family life had improved with 68% saying that academic performance had

improved and 83% ci ng improved a endance. 29% of the families stated that their child had had fixed term exclusion prior to

the training, only 13% reported fixed term exclusions during the six month interven on period, represen ng a reduc on of 45%

in exclusions. Anne Collins, SENDCO from Stockton Heath Primary school said,

“This has given me a real insight into how some of our most challenging pupils are being parented. This project has provided the opportunity for me to have a much more detailed and knowledgeable dialogue with some parents about how their child’s ADHD is managed at home and the impact of this on their behaviour and learning in school. I look forward to being able to offer this to new families as they join our school over the next three years.”

An increasing number of schools across the UK are now invi ng the ADHD Founda on to support them with training to establish sustainable parent training and support programmes on the school site as part of a wider remit to engage parents in suppor ng’ learning, academic achievement and their child’s emo onal well being through ADHD and Au sm Friendly schools.

Founda on for four years, a journey with revitalised

leadership under Dr Tony Lloyd. At our staring point, the

trek through the mountain rainforests of Peru to visit

Machu Picchu, our brief was to raise the charity’s profile

during its fundraising challenges. From early on in the

campaign we realised the greater opportunity was to

achieve strategic posi oning and we have worked with

reputa on ‐raising newspaper and broadcas ng features,

taking on the s gma surrounding ADHD and reframing

the conversa on that ADHD can be a super power.

Today, ADHD Founda on is unrecognisable to four years

ago; it is sustainable with global partners and recognised

ini a ves, with a sector leading, two‐day annual UK

conference for medics and educators.

We are now regularly approached by journalists looking

to find commentators on the subject and find families

who can provide informed comment about living with

the condi on and its treatment. ADHD, we hope is now

star ng to be more widely understood, but there is work

to be done and the publica on of the first UK Disease

Impact Report at this year’s conference, should further

the cause of families struggling with the system and

bring about real las ng change and understanding.

We are very much part of the ADHD Founda on team

and we are very privileged to play a small part in their
