Bhubaneswar

(Activities Report of the Centre)

........Bringing smile back to community

OVERVIEW

Centre of rural and tribal development, established in the year 2011, with the aim to

improve the quality of life of rural and tribal community of Odisha, has taken efforts to

identify social needs and to adopt new science and technology based solutions by social-

engineering of youth through capacity building (providing training on new science and

technology) on various means of bringing change in health, education and living

conditions as well as alternate income generation avenues of the community.

Centre has been taking all efforts under the leadership of Centre of Biotechnology of our

University to mobilize the community for capacity building through awareness campaign,

training and developing entrepreneurship skills on alternate income generating avenues

like; cultivation and production of value added products from leaf powder, oleoresin and

essential oil from moringa, tulsi, turmeric, ginger and Kaempferia etc. Value added

Special initiatives are taken to establish market tie-up with functionaries of Govt. of

Odisha and private companies for marketing of products, which leads towards

sustainability of the present endeavour. ‘Chhatabar Grampanchayat’ of Khurda district

consisting of 7 villages with around 10,000 people, majority of which are Scheduled

Tribes, Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Classes was/has been taken as place

operation to make the concept of livelihood generation operational.

Centre further has taken initiative in massive training efforts by setting up a clean energy

research lab at a cost of over 30 lakhs within the Institute of technical education and

research (ITER) and assembled a core team of international experts having in-depth

knowledge in international energy industry as well as in clean technologies and economic

development process. The clean energy research team’s mission is to support the

Sustainable Energy Technologies by developing solutions to key health, education,

lifestyle, and productivity issues facing emerging economies especially in poorly

electrified Indian villages. For example in a cluster of 12 villages in and around

Jahangirabad of Cuttack district has been solar electrified. A wide variety of Clean

Technologies (LED lighting, solar water pumps, electric car and vans, and solar powered

sanitation and e-Learning center) have been deployed together with an uninterrupted clean

energy services- a very unique system in India. The University through the centre is

committed to expand this practical clean development model as its core/thrust area where

education, research, and outreach can be combined symbiotically for common good of the

societies from our university laboratory.

ACTIVITIES:

❖ The Centre of rural and tribal development, Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University has

adopted the following plan-of-action for improvement of quality of life of community

❖ In collaboration with its health service providing associated institutions of University-

CBT,IMS.IDS,SNC,SPS entry-level activities have been carried out by the center in

organizing health awareness campaigning programme for prevention of AIDS, blood

donation camps, eye check-up, dental check-up and free distribution of medicines.

❖ Unemployed youth are encouraged to start small-scale extraction unit in their own village

and trainings are conducted for extraction of plant products. Special training sessions for

SHG groups are done involving the experts from different specialties from center of

Biotechnology: like preparation of value added products, marketing of the products and

sharing the benefits coming from the business.

❖ A customized production unit set up in one of the villages and extraction and packaging

of value added products using essential oils, curcumin, oleoresins and are carried out by

the organisation with the help of village people and SHG from the beginning of the

project. Self help group (SHG) of all 7 villages of Chhatabar are involved in the project

activity throughout for establishing sustainability.

❖ The Centre helped in establishing market tie-up with various state level and national level

organization; TDCCoL and ORMAS and private entrepreneurs for selling of its value

added products developed by local community.

❖ The associated institutes of Centre for rural and tribal development under the leader ship

of ITER has taken the lead in community service in villages around Jahangirabad

with major focus on off grid electrification, electric cars and solar electricity based rural

industrial development. The students, faculty, and other stakeholders such as villagers

and development officials have been engaged for community economic development

using solar power. The rich social and cultural aspects of clean tech and high tech have

been clearer through such grass root implementation of research outputs focusing on the

major issue of uninterrupted energy availability in remote villages at an affordable

cost. Research team from ITER has been deployed for carrying out the research and

development and outreach activity. Dr. Kar with support of his grass root project

development team have been working since last seven years for bringing renewable

energy revolution in his native village near Salipur, Odisha through a non-profit

organization ADIRE (www.adire.org).

IMPACT ON SOCIETY:

• Successful implementation of the strategy through extensive training, demonstration and

awareness campaign will have impact on poor and unemployed community of ‘Chhatabar

Grampanchayat’ for their capacity building for sustainable livelihood by initiating

cultivation of important medicinal plants and setting up a small scale production unit for

extraction and packaging of value added products. The local natural resource planning

bringing in permanent measure, developing skill and knowledge base, of local and

government representatives and above all ensuring continuation of network activities and

market tie-up for selling of medicinal plants and value added products will definitely

ensure sustainability of the project and will no doubt can be a model project having

tremendous scope for its replicability in different regions of the nation.

• The creation of solar, biomass, and biogas energy at an affordable cost, in his village, has

created opportunities for greater research on sustainable development in other parts of

Odisha as well as other parts of India.
