If you were one of the few that made the trip to the 2014 AAW Sym- posium in Phoenix Az., I don’t have tell you that is nice to be back in the Ohio weather. Yes, It is nice and cool in Ohio compared to Phoenix where the average temperature was 115 F. Thank God for air conditioning. The symposium was the cool part of the trip. I got lots of ideas to try as well as to show at the upcoming demos. I can’t wait to try my hand at them. I attended lots of classes from turning the perfect bowl - to how to teach woodturning to the new person. I also attended a class on 10 projects for youth. These classes were all taught by instructors like Jimmy Clewes, Rudolph Lopez and Clay Foster, just to name a few. For me, one of the most exciting parts of the symposium was being the right hand man for Al Hockenberry, Michael Werner and Michael Mocho, what a treat! Being a volunteer and attending the classes made the trip worthwhile. Tree Identification/Picnic will be on July 12 at Blendon Woods Metro park, Westerville at 9:30 a.m. Kathy Smith a forester from OSU will lead a tree-identification walk. The Learning and Discovery event will be fol- lowed by pot-luck lunch (Club provides meat and drinks) and games (horseshoes, corn hole, etc.). We have use of the shelter until 3:30. Mark your calendar and tell your friends; everyone is welcome. .Please RSVP to Mike Trucco, [email protected] or call (614) 218-4397 so he can plan meat and drinks accordingly. Next year’s (2015) symposium will be held in our back yard (OK the back 40) on June 25-28 in Pitts- burg Pa. So start making plans to attend. While I was in Phoenix, I met the President of the Pitts- burgh local chapter and he asked if we (Central Ohio Woodturners) would help by volunteering at the 2015 symposium. Believe me with the sympo- sium being this close to home, volunteering to help a demonstrator like a Jimmy Clews is a great way to be a part of the symposium. Being a volunteer is a rewarding experience you will not forget. So check out the AAW website for information and get your name in early to be the right hand man for a demonstrator such as Paul J. Fennell. While you are on the AAW website, check out some of the photos and videos form the Phoenix symposium. So let’s all step up and show the Pittsburgh Chap- ter what the Central Ohio Wood turners are made of - be a volunteer and start making plans now to attend the 2015 AAW Symposium in Pittsburgh, on June 25-28 and be a part of the action. continued on page 4

Dennis DeVendra on Broad and High:

Our Fellow Turner, Dennis DeVendra was fea-tured on the WOSU-TV program, Broad and Highbroadcast on July 2. If you missed watching the broadcast, the full episode can be seen online at:

http://video.wosu.org/program/broad-and-high/

Congratulations Dennis! A great spokesperson forwoodturners and an inspiration for all. Broad and High webpage had this to say about him, “Den-nis DeVendra decided to take up woodturning andusing lathes, he had a hard time finding mentors who would teach him. People were apprehensive about helping a blind man operate machinery that reaches speeds of up to more than 1,000 RPMs. But Dennis persevered despite his challenges, andis now the vice president of the Central Ohio Woodturners Association. We visited Dennis at his German Village workshop where he makes allof his creations.”

Woodturning Tips From Our Archives:

When sanding a bowl, wet it down and let it dry at about 180 grit and again at about 280 or 320 grit. This will raise the grain and should help to improve the final finish. Floyd Anstaett, March 2000

The Beall buffing system is excellent for cleaning the plastic lenses of your woodturning face shields and gog-gles use the tripoli compound if especially dirty or scratched, and white diamond compound if only a light cleaning is necessary. Makes them almost as good as new. Jack Hock, November 1999

Newsletter Summer News Briefs: This year during the summer recess an abbreviated newsletter is being dis-tributed among the club membership each month to stay connected and to make information about important events available. Stay tuned for announcements of summer workshop visits and other activities as dates firm up. Rumors have it that two more workshop visits are being planned including one to an enterprising inventor east of Columbus.

A WOODTURNER’S FIRST AID KITBy Marty Gottesman, MD

Woodturners are at risk of injury from many sources in their shops. I have put together a first aid kit that is de-signed for our needs. Adapt it as you see fit. It’s what works for me.

1. Band-Aids Have a few of each size from small to large. Include the ones made for knuckles and finger-tips since these are frequent areas of cuts, scrapes and burns.

2. 4x4 gauze pads for larger wounds and cleaning cuts

3. Scissors, tape and gauze wraps or Ace bandages for securing dressings

4. Antibiotic ointment such as Neosporin for cuts & burns

5. Steri-Strips or butterfly bandages to hold small cuts together

6. Tweezers (such as Tweezerman brand “point tweezers” which have a tip fine enough to pluck a single hair) & a magnifying glass or visor for splinter removal & alcohol to clean tweezer tips

7. Eye wash with an eye cup to wash out debris

8. Betadine (if not allergic to iodine), chlorhexidine or even soap and water for cleansing wounds

9. Clean plastic ziplock-type baggie for amputated digit(s)

10. Clean disposable gloves for universal precautions

C.O.W. Club Report:The Officers (Directors) met on June 25, 2014. Significant items include:

• Treasurer’s Report – Balance on hand of $3,828.30.• The club will demonstrate at the State Fair. We will need up to 30 volunteers to demonstrate ( ½

day shifts) and interact with the crowd. Dates will be announced.• The club will demonstrate at the Paul Bunyan Show near Cambridge, October 3, 4 & 5.• A list of potential programs has been generated for the next year; Max Kackstetter is finalizing.• Steering Committee: President Paul is finalizing the roster for the coming year.• Holy Spirit Auction – August 7, 8 & 9. As last year, each member is asked to contribute one

piece to thank the church for free meeting space, storage space and parking.• Discussion question: How can we make the May auction be available to more people and more

successful for our club? For the most part, we are selling our own items to ourselves; is there a better way?

Nelson Meyer, Secretary

Mr. President... (continued from page 1)Now, there is a lot going on between now and next year’s Symposium. This past weekend was our first open shop at Barb Crockett’s house. If you missed it, you missed some great food, great AC in Barb’s shop, as well as Jim Burrows (Barbs other half) turning a hollow form. We also turned a few pens for the pens for troops’ project. Thanks to Barb for opening up her house and shop.

Our next event will be a tree Identification class at Blendon Woods on Saturday, July 12 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00p.m. with a well known professor from The Ohio State University. We will learn how to identify trees as well as good wood from bad wood. So plan on joining us for this event. Afterwards we will have a picnic, so bring a covered dish to share. If you have a favorite yard game please bring it to share with your fellow turner. You never know, we just may have a corn hole tournament. Then later in July, the great Ohio State fair will start July 23 and run through Aug 3. The club will be doing a demo at the fair on Aug 1, 2 and 3. We will need some demonstrators at the fair, so please get with one of your officers if you are interested. Then on October ( 3, 4 & 5) we will be at the Paul Bunyon show and we will need to have some demonstrators there as well. If you have never been to the Paul Bunyon show, it is an outstanding wood show. Check out the website www.ohioforest.org. More to come on this later this summer.

As always turn safe and wear your PPE (Personal Protection Equipment). If you have not read the latest article in the current AAW magazine on face shields, you need to read it. This is one more reason to be a AAW mem-ber (for the small price of membership you get an outstanding magazine with good articles as well as the latest news and pictures from other members around the country). So pick up the latest issue and read the article on face shields, it is an eye opener. You should then make a trip to go see Ron or Jim to buy a good face shield and by all means - use it.

Keep the wood spinning and hope to see you at one, if not all, of the upcoming activities. If you have any questions about any of the upcoming events, please feel free to contact one of your officers - that’s why we get paid the big bucks! Be safe. Your President, Paul N Courtright

Nelson Meyer's Safari to Tanzania, in Africa

In mid-June, I went with family members and their friends on a safari-trip to Tanzania. The primary objective was to see the game in the Serengeti area, but as a woodworker, I was especially interested when we stopped at a shop that sold “genuine hand-carved” African pieces because they said the Makonde Woodcarving “factory” was in the back. I immediately listened for the sounds of saws and other ma-chinery I associated with a “factory.”

Imagine my surprise when I saw only a 10’x15’ “structure” behind the sales building with a 3-foot high “walls,” open-air sides and thatched roof. The nine workers all sat on the ground with backs to the wall, each carving his personally designed item out of ebony. Not one power tool; no carvingstand or even a vise! Certainly, no patterns! Each artist held the wood with his bare feet and/or legs and used only acouple of chisels, sandpaper, and black shoe polish to make their creations, start to finish! The carvers were friendly, eager to show you what they were making. Since the sales room had electric lights, I asked if they every used power tools. They answered with a simple “No,” but with a look that said, “Why would we want to do that?” I now see their point; it just wouldn’t be the same.

We bought a bowl and a giraffe, both of which will not onlyremind me of that open-aired shop on top of a hill in Africa, but of another way of creating items of beauty and remem-brance.Nelson Meyer

Thanking Holy Spirit...

Have you noticed how far a simple "Thank you!" goes these days? While some folks seem to have forgotten how to say it, it comes easily to woodturners. When someone gives us wood, we usually give them back some-thing we've turned from it -- a simple but elegant "Thank you!"

Holy Spirit Church has given us a wonderful and spacious place to meet this past year (Remember the previous year when we couldn't all fit into the room?). They store our big lathe and our library. They pay for the heat and the lights. It has been quite a change from our previous spot -- remember standing in line at the kiosk that some-times worked ... just to pay for your parking? With all the Holy Spirit folks have given us, they have not asked us to pay one cent!

We now have the opportunity to say "Thank you!" Holy Spirit is holding a Silent Auction in connection with their Festival on August 7, 8 & 9. We are asking each club member to say your own "Thank you" by donating just one of your hand turned items for this auction. Just one -- it's that simple. Your personally turned item will tell the church how much we appreciate their generosity and hospitality.

Here's the deal:

•Select an item you've turned

•Include a card or note for the purchaser, elling the wood and/or something about it.

•Include a card for staff with the estimated retail value, so they know how to set a minimum bid

•Include your business card so that anyone wishing to make a purchase outside the auction can contact you

•Drop your item off at Woodcraft, WoodWerks or the Holy Spirit Parish Office (open 8-4 weekdays,

located near the school at the South end of the parking lot)

As you know, giving a hand made item is a very personal and meaningful way to say "Thank You!" Won't you join us in showing the Holy Spirit folks just how much their gift has meant to us?
