Ⅰ. Competition Background and Purpose
1. Background and purpose of the competition
Central Square is located in Magok, Seoul. The town is being developed to be a
core area of the southwest of Seoul where nature and industry can be harmonized
and sustainable social value can be pursued.
Central Square is the geographical center of Magok. It is also met with two subway
stations(airport railroad and subway line number nine), which makes it the central
gateway to Magok. These two aspects are the major identities of the square.
In order to play suitable role to its identities, Magok Central Square's prime value of
closely connecting human, culture and place should be maximized.
Central Square should be mingled with surrounding area to minimize the tension
between them.
2. Central Square
▪ Location: 368-3, Magok-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul, Republic of Korea
▪ Area: 12,979㎡
▪ Present condition:
- The square is located near the center of Magok development zone.
- Two sides of the suqre are roads and it is also met with two subway stations.

Ⅱ. Competition Overview
1. Title
▪ "Central Gateway To The Future Town Magok, International Idea Competition for
Central Square"
2. Purpose
▪ Collecting creative ideas for space application plan of the Central Square and
cultural contents and facilities which will be contained in the Central Square in
order to maximize the value of its identities.
3. Entrants’ Qualification
▪ The competition is open to anyone interested who is aged 19 and over.
▪ You can participate by a team but the number of team members can not be
larger than three.
▪ Only one output per a team is accepted. Also, you cannot join different teams.
4. Competition Object
▪ Space application plan for the Magok Central Square(specific designs and programs)
▪ Creative cultural contents which can be conveyed by the Magok Central Square.
▪ Environmental facilities which can be put on the Magok Central Square.
5. Schedule
▪ Registration & Submission: October 14, 2013 ~ November 15, 2013
▪ Submission deadline: 17:00 November 15, 2013 (Submission deadline is critical.
All submission materials must be uploaded by this deadline.)
▪ Evaluation by the evaluation committee: November 16, 2013 ~ November 22, 2013
▪ Announcement of winners: December, 2013

Ⅲ. Competition Contents and Considerations
1. Competition Contents▪ Space application plan for the Central Square(specific designs and programs)
- Being in harmony with near area like Central Park and green fields, space
application plan for ground, first and second basement level and space related
with subway stations.
- Space application plan for linking space between the square and subway
stations.
- Plan for vertical links using stairs, escalators, and elevators.
▪ Ideas for cultural contents like exhibitions, cultural events, and story-telling which
can be held in the Central Square and provide various cultural activities.
- Proposals for cultural events considering that Central Square is a sunken square
- Exhibitions and cultural festivals which can be held in Central Square
- Concept images, slogans, characters, story-telling and the name of places in
Central Square which can easily express its identities.
▪ Ideas for environment facility design to make Central Square distinctive.
- Proposals for future-oriented and sustainable environment facility designs(bench,
shelter, landscape facility designs, etc.)
- Ideas for media pole and interactive facilities
2. Competition Considerations▪ Pay attention to competition contents mentioned above.
▪ Ideas and proposals should be able to emphasize geographical and functional
identities of the Central Square.
3. Plan For the Usage Of Competition Results ▪ Submitted proposals and ideas can be accepted based on their creativity,
suitability and practicability.
▪ The organizer of the competition can use submitted proposals and ideas directly
and/or indirectly, and the organizer also can reinterpret and use them.
▪ All the rights-including copyrights-to all submitted materials, proposals and ideas
belong to the the organizer of the competition. The organizer of the competition
has the rights to use ideas from the competition both directly and/or indirectly.

Ⅳ. Process of Competition
1. Submission materials▪ Application: fill out [Form 1] and upload onto the website
▪ The summary of the idea: fill out [Form 2] and upload onto the website
▪ Deliverables : upload files(no more than ten A4-pages and 30MB in PPT or PDF
format) onto the website

2. Submission methods
▪ Submission period: October 14, 2013 ~ November 15, 2013
▪ Registration and Submission

- Register personal information to participate in the competition then submit
outputs through the website.
3. Evaluation
▪ Evaluation period: November 16, 2013 ~ November 22, 2013
▪ Evaluation criteria: creativity, suitability to the competition's purpose, practicability,
and additional standards of the evaluation committee
4. Announcement Of Winners▪ Announcement of winners: December, 2013

▪ Prizes
1st Place 1 winner USD 3,000 ※There can be a modification
according to the number and quality
of submitted materials.

5. Copyrights▪ The organizer of the competition has the rights to use all materials submitted to
the competition for publication, exhibition, distribution, etc.
▪ All the rights-including copyrights-concerning all submitted materials, proposals
and ideas belong to the organizer of the competition. The organizer of the
competition has the rights to use ideas and materials submitted to the
competition both directly and/or indirectly.

Ⅴ. Specifications of Submitted Materials
1. Guidelines for the submission
▪ Only one submission per each registered individual or team (Double registrations by the same person are prohibited)
▪ Language: English
▪ Points of the compass and scale on maps must be marked, and the metric system
must be used.
▪ Submission file specifications
- PPT or PDF formal (Maximum file size: 30MB)- Maximum of ten A4-pages (landscape or portrait)- The competition organizer will identify entries by the entrant‘s identification
number, which will be provided at the time of registration. A blank box for the ID number must be provided at top of the cover page (box size: width X height = 5cm X 1.5cm).
- Entrant names, firm names, and all other forms of identification are prohibited from being included on submitted materials.
- Entrants can choose the manner of presentation by inserting diagrams, three-dimensional pictures, photos, sketches, etc. to explain ideas.
- Submitted materials that do not comply with the regulations mentioned above will be eliminated from the evaluation.

Ⅵ. Notification
1. Cases For The Exclusion From The Competition
▪ Previously submitted or awarded projects of other competitions
▪ Infringement of copyright
▪ Fail to meet the specifications and regulations of the competition
2. Further Information▪ Entrant names, firm names, and all other marks of identification are prohibited
on submitted materials.
▪ In the event of all the submitted materials' being parts of previously published
works or plagiarism, announcement of winner will be canceled and prize money
will not be granted. If prize money has already been given, it is legally required
to be returned.
▪ Personal information in the application will not be used for any purposes except
for identification and awarding prize money.
▪ Any tax resulting from prize money is the responsibility of the winners.
▪ All the rights-including copyrights-to all submitted materials belong to the
competition organizer.
▪ All materials or deliverables submitted to the competition become the property
of the competition organizer and will not be returned. Entrants cannot request
returns for submitted work or production costs.

“Central Gateway To The Future Town Magok,International Idea Competition for Central Square“
Central Square is located in Magok, Seoul. The town is being developed to
be a core area of the southwest of Seoul where nature and industry can be
harmonized and sustainable social value can be pursued.
Central Square is the geographical center of this high-tech town Magok. And
the square is also met with two subway stations(Airport Railroad and subway
line number nine), which makes it the central gateway to Magok. These two
aspects are the major identities of the Central Square.
Only when Central Square's these major identities are well formed and its role
as the center of Magok are properly played, Magok can be a well-balanced
and future-oriented town.
In order to meet this need, Central Square's prime value of closely connecting
human, culture and place should be maximized.
In addition, Central Square should be mingled with surrounding area to
minimize the tension between them. If it is too conspicuous, it will ruin the
whole goal of the Central Square.
The purpose of this international idea competition is finding a way to clearly
reveal Central Square's major identities and maximize its prime value and give
it a suitable role as the center of Magok.
As an important step to achieve this purpose, space application plan for th
Central Square and creative proposals and ideas for cultural contents and
environment facilities which can be contained in the square are contested. If
you are interested, be free to participate in the competition.
