Another year of great success and substantial change. Central Districts hockey?s tag line is ?heartland of hockey? and the
2016 calendar year has been highlighted with many moments that touch our hearts to engender support and love for the game.
Some highlights:
* Kayla Whitelock's recognition as 2016 Player?s Player of the Year and Player of the Year. Mark Hager commented that she is probably the best women?s Black Stick ever! Kayla role models leadership and excellence and we are so proud of her achievements and we wish her all the very best in whatever she chooses to do next.
* Shea McAleese winning 2016 Player of the Year for the Black Sticks team ? a wonderful ambassador for hockey sportsmanship and performance.
* The U18 Central Womens team?s performance in the final. The team hug after they lost the shoot-out to Auckland showed they knew what their team had achieved together.
* All of our Regional teams for working hard and representing our region with PRIDE.
* Graeme Findlay winning Community Coach of the Year for tirelessly coaching age group rep teams, club and school teams and inspiring young people to play hockey.
* Ngaio Haenga winning HNZ Club Volunteer of the Year. Ngaio was recognised for going the extra mile to ensure her club and its players enjoyed the game.
* The numerous HNZ Service Awards for the generous long-serving volunteers in our region.
* Central Districts Hockey Associations, Manawatu, Wanganui and Taranaki receiving Gold, Sliver and Bronze Awards for Participation Growth.
* The Black Sticks fund raising dinner lead by John and Angela Turkington ? a glamorous and successful event that brought the womens Black Sticks team to the region. Attended by over 300 people the event raised over $90K for the team as they built towards the Rio Olympics.
Our Regional teams continued to excel on the national stage, as behind the scenes work was undertaken to transition the High Performance Programme to an integrated association programme. Work continues in this area, and my thanks go to all of the people involved.
In particular, I would like to mention the work of Greg Nicol, our Director of Coaching, who resigned from his role in September. Greg realised early in his tenure that working through our region was a critical success factor. He has established a network of coaches and athletes through the region to create and deliver ?The Central Way?. Greg is a passionate hockey leader; he led the Central teams to unprecedented success and I wish him all the very best for the future. Central?s programme is in good hands with his successor, Kathy Norman and the wider team

During 2016, our Community Hockey Manager, Kathy Norman, has worked tirelessly to support our Associations in their hockey delivery. And with our focus on attracting children at the entry level, we?re particularly proud of the fact that our totals included a record number of this age group.
Off the turf, we welcomed new delegates to the management committee. Our new members, Kit Rutherford (Hawke's Bay), Marion Webby (Taranaki), and Kevin Nicholson (Manawatu), made important contributions as we dealt with a number of changes.
I would like to acknowledge the service given by retired chairman Iain Taylor and Manawatu delegate, David Annear. Both have played significant roles in improving the governance of Central Districts Hockey and in steering the direction of our high performance and community hockey.
I would also like to express my gratitude to Hockey New Zealand and its Chief Executive, Ian Francis, for the support he has provided this year and my thanks to the Associations for provision of coaches, technical support and players with such passion and talent. To our sponsors and funders, hockey simply would not happen without your backing.
Finally, I would like to congratulate Central Districts Hockey on its achievements through the year. I recognise the service and dedication of Kathy Norman and Jan Connelly in making ?CD? hockey happen and importantly, I would like to acknowledge my fellow board members. Each member of the Central Districts Hockey Board has contributed their expertise, their time and their passion to ensure that the organisation and the sport can continue to strive for excellence.

FUTURE ELITE CAMP
Future Elite was once again held in the sunny Hawke's Bay - players seen above undertaking their morning stretching routine! We were fortunate to secure the coaching services once again of high calibre Central coaches - Greg Nicol, Shea McAleese, Steffan Fastier, Joe Hanks, Caryn Paewai and Pippa Norman. Over 30 players experienced hockey at the next level - what the Central environment looks like on and off the pitch - from goal setting to learning specialist technical skills, to hearing from seasoned Olympians to understanding the expectations of our Central "PRIDE". Players from these Future Elite camps continue to push for spots in the Central U18 teams and their local Association teams.
MAD CAMP
"Make A Difference" is just what was planned for the 50 youngsters who signed up for the 2016 MAD camp in Wanganui. Part of that was the players' responsibility - to take as much as possible from the camp, and part of that was the responsibility of our coaches. This year's players were fortunate to have the extensive knowledge of Caryn Paewai, Verity Sharland and Pippa Norman, along with Joe Hanks and Steffan Fastier on-site for the three days. As well as learning about the 'Central Way' of playing hockey, players had many worthwhile and fun experiences, on and off the turf.

Community Highlights2016 Small Sticks In-School Numbers
Central Hockey Associations deliver to 26% of all primary schools and primary aged students in New Zealand. The continuing challenge for Associations is to convert more of these "first time" hockey experiences into regular play in Associations' Small Sticks Competitions.

CHM's thoughts on 2016...
Every four years a major event of exceptional and magical sporting quality takes place -
the Olympic Games! Rio 2016
It was an honour to host the Black Sticks Women in Manawatu prior to them leaving for Rio, with much thanks to the support of John and Angela Turkington of Marton. What an entertaining night with former Olympian, Lesley Murdoch asking poignant questions of our panel - Kayla Whitelock, Richie McCaw and Nick Horvath. It was also a real bonus to re-connect with so many former Black Sticks players who sent wise words of support and encouragement to our teams prior to them leaving. Equally thrilling was the opportunity I had to witness the community engagement around the Games and our teams - from the Mini Olympics in Manawatu; Olympic themed Kiwi Sticks festival in Wanganui and Hawke's Bay contributing to the #SticksUP campaign; an Olympic breakfast in Rangitikei and visits to schools by our Olympians. I have no doubt that many an inspirational seed will have been sown within the hearts of our existing and future Central players!
My thanks go to the wonderful work carried out by all nine of our Central Associations - to the employees who work tirelessly to promote and organise hockey and to the volunteers who week in, week out, make things happen for those who want to play the game. To our Central Board, particularly Chair Anne Abraham, Adminstrator Jan Connelly and Greg Nicol, former DOC, thank you all for your on-going support during the year. We are indeed very fortunate to have a such a heartland of support for hockey within our region.
As we continue to grow in numbers, may players especially, make a conscious effort to give back to our sport in any way possible - as a coach; an umpire; a manager; an administrator, not only as thanks to those who helped us, but also as an inspiration to others.
