CENTRAL INSTRUMENTS FACILITY

I NT RO DI,.JCT ION

The Central Instruments Facility (ClF) was set up at liT Guwahati in the month of May 2004. Th e concept of CIF evolved around the need for locating expensive equipment required by the faculty of multiple departments/centers for carrying out their research in a central place. The need of the other researchers working under various universities, research institutes and industries situated in the Northeastern Region of India were also considered while formulating the CIF. The CIF accommodates sophisticated analytical instruments, which cater the cutting-edge research in many areas of modern science and technology. These equipment are of inter/multidisciplinary utility and thus offer scope for their optimum utilization. At present the CIF houses equipment like, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectrometer (400 MHz), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Spectrometer, Advanced Confocal Laser Scan Microscope (CLSM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). Phase wise induction of more numbers of highly sophisticated equipment to meet the demand on advanced R&D work at liT Guwahati is under active consideration

CENTRE FOR MASS MEDIA COMMUNICATION

INTRODUCTION

M ass media usually are thought of as sources of news and entertainment. They also carry messages of persuasion. Important, though often overlooked, is how mass messages bind people in to communities, even into nations. Uni ted Nations study based on the data on the number of television and rad io sets around the globe and these data segregated into western democracies and developing countries shows a di rect corelations between med ia use, education and prosperity.

Centre for M ass M edia Communication (CMMC) of the Insti tute was started in M ay 2004 with an objective to achieve some of the above mentioned outcomes. Presently the Centre has state-of-the-art pre-press, offset press and post press facil ities. In addition to training stud ents of the Department of Design regard ing various aspects of print media design, it ca ters to vari ous in-house prin ti ng requirements of liT Guwahati. In fu ture it will be expanded to incl ude other elements of mass media like electronic and photographic media.

COMPUTER CENTRE

INTRODUCTION

The Computer Centre is solely responsible for keeping the electronic communication and computation related facilities available to each and every member of liT Guwahati.

The services provided by the Centre includes-Installation and maintenance of Servers for Internet access, e-mailing facilities and computation facilities; management and upkeep of the official liT Guwahati and Intranet web page; management of EPABX services; management of the Centralised Computer Lab accessible by all the students of the Institute; laying and maintaining the huge Campus Wide Network; providing technical assistance to academic institutes and organisations in and around Guwahati; providing facilities to the students who come from various academic institutes for their short-term courses, project work, summer training, etc. These facilities are constantly upgraded to meet the evolving standards of IT.

COMPUTING FACILITIES

In keeping with our policy of constant upgradation, the Computer Centre upgraded 69 numbers of Pentium 4 1.6 Ghz, 128 MB, CRT monitor PCs to Pentium 0 Processor, 512MB, 17" TFT PCs. An additional 40 numbers of PCs of the same configuration were also procured and installed. With this new procurement the total number of PCs available in the Computer Centre laboratory is about 150. The centre also procu red 4 numbers of servers (Dual core Xeon 3.4 Ghz, 8 GB RAM, 4 x 300 GB HOD).

The Computer Centre remains open for seventeen hours (8:00 AM to 1 :00 AM) on all days and the students visit the Centre for their computing tasks. Many Departments use the facilities of the Computer Centre to conduct their practical classes and examinations.

NETWORKING

The major purchases this year includes a Cisco 3800 Integrated Services Router, ADSL modems, etc. The process of providing networking connectivity to Sports Complex, Medical Complex and Married Hostel which was started in the previous year has been completed. We have already initiated the process of providing network toAuditorium, Lecture Complex and up-coming boys' hostel. Additional fibre cables were drawn to substation 6 and 7 to provide redundancy.

138

INTERNET FACILITY

In order to meet the ever-growing demand for Internet bandwidth an additional 8 Mbps (1 :1) bandwidth was procured from BSNL. The existing Internet service providers are - STPI (2Mbps 1 :1), ERNET (2M bps 1 :2) and VSNL (1 Mbps 1:1) . Another 8 Mbps (1:1) bandwidth from Bharti Airtel has been finalized and the install ation process is expected to start very soon. Intern et facility has also been successfully extended to the residences of faculty and staff and to all rooms of Guest House using ADSL technology. The staff of the centre are actively involved in the maintenance of the ADSL links.

ERNET POINT-OF-PRESENCE

liT Guwahati is a Level-3 PoP (Point-of-Presence) for ERNET in this region. Currently, four educational and research institutes viz. Gauhati University (GU), Assam Agriculture University (AAU), Central Inland Fish eri es Research Institute (CIFRI) and Pigs Research Institute have taken Internet connectivity from the ERNET Pop. In order to cater to the growing demand of the PoP two project engineers were appointed.

A five day workshop on 'MPLS implementation on ERNET backbone' held in Pune in November 2006 was attended by Mr. J.K. Ghosh, Assistant Project Engineer.

EPABX FACILITY

The Institute has a full-fledged Tel ep hone Exchange and provides telephone connectivity to all the offices and residences of the Institute. The total number of phone connectior.s from the exchange is more th an thousand (1000). An on-line billing system is used to check and generate the monthly phone bills. In order to reduce the downtime of the exchange redundant power backups have been arranged both in the PPN and EPN. All technical aspects related to the maintenance of the EPABX is under the purview of the Computer Centre.

GARUDA PROJECT

Our Institute is an active partner of the GARUDA project, a nation-wide collaboration of ed ucational and research institutes to provide grid computing facility. A 100 Mbps network connectivity to the grid has been installed and successfully tested. A head node has also been installed through which users can connect to the grid. A number of users have started using the facilities of the grid.

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati

Page 6: CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY · CENTER FOR EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY ... Prof. R. Tiwari, Head, CET, delivered a seminar on "Distance ... procured from BSNL

As part of our MoU with CDAC and ERNET, the promoters of the grid, we have to provide computing resources. In this regard a deal to procure a 128 CPU high performance compute cluster (HPCC) has been fi nalized and some of the equipment have already arrived. The highlights of the HPCC are - 136 CPU Opteron processor, SAN switch, 4 terabytes storage system, tape library, HPCC s/w, parallel compilers, etc.

The second GARUDA's partner meet was held in the month of September 2006 at Bangalore, Mr. A.S. Sairam, Computer Engi neer I, attended the meet.

SUPPORT

Th e Computer Centre provides and maintains th e PCs of the Faculty and Staff of the Institute. In addition to providing direct support to the members of the Institute, the Computer Centre also frequently hosts write-ups (HOWTOs, FAQs, etc) in its Intranet websi te. The Centre also maintainsan online E-Notice board for postingand viewing notices electronically campus-wide, a web-based Complain M anagemen t Information System, etc.

TRAINING AND CONSULTANCY

Th e staff of the Centre are involved in providing summer trai nin g and project work to visiting students of other institutes. In order to develop and nurture fresh tal ent, the Centre also provides training with stipend to fresh candidates. At present the centre has ten such trainees.

Annual Report 2006-2007
