Additionally the regional community has bene-fited from the presence of Scouting and its mis-sion to provide service. Throughout the dec-ades scouts have dedicated countless hours to improving life throughout Worcester County.

Scouts mobilized to assist with a city-wide housefly eradication to reduce the incidence of disease in 1912. They planted over 100,000 trees in the late 1920s, sold war bonds and helped with food, aluminum and paper drives in the 1940s, and introduced the scout initiative “Get Out and Vote” in the 1950s.

The Mohegan Council, BSA has been on the forefront of responding to social needs in our community. In 1966, an outreach program was introduced to engage inner city youngsters in the benefits of the scouting program. Young people who would not ordinarily have had the opportunity participated in a “Camping for Character” program at Treasure Valley Scout Reservation. This program continues today as Scoutreach.

In 1970, the Mohegan Council introduced Pro-ject S.O.A.R. (continued on page 8)

The achievement is not simply longevity.

The Boy Scouts of America has become one of the largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations in the nation. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the respon-sibilities of participating citizenship, and com-bines educational activities with hands-on, out-door fun.

The outcome of Scouting is and has been a sig-nificant contribution to a more conscientious, responsible, and productive society. From presidents, to astronauts, to captains of industry – the BSA has graduated countless leaders who have gone forward to make a positive impact on our world.

The Mohegan Council currently serves almost 5,000 youngsters ranging in ages from 6 to 18 years and engages over 1,800 registered volun-teers in the delivery of programs. Since the Council was organized almost a century ago, more than half a million individuals in the Worcester region have benefited from their as-sociation with Scouting.

and to educate the public concerning our na-tion's musical history.

Hug a Tree

The Hug-a-Tree and survive program was de-signed to teach children ages 5-12 basic survival skills if they get lost in the woods and is pre-sented by our Venturing Crew 2083 from Hol-den.

Aldrich Astronomical Show

The Aldrich Astro-nomical Society, Inc. has been offer-ing astronomy and space educational e n r i c h -ment activities in local venues since

1932! The Aldrich name comes from Professor Fred David Aldrich who was a very well liked Professor at Worcester Academy in the early 1900s and used to run passionate astronomy outreach programs in the community aimed at getting youth interested in science. We have offered scouts throughout the Massachu-setts area our member knowledge and volunteer help in earning badges, pins & belt loops based on current knowledge of astronomy and space science. We also have expanded our programs through direct links with NASA volunteer ef-forts like the NASA/JPL Solar System Ambas-sador Program, the Saturn Observation Cam-paign and the Night Sky Network!

Order of the Arrow

The Order of the Arrow (OA) is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). It uses Native American-styled traditions and ceremonies to bestow recognition on scouts selected by their peers as best exemplify-ing the ideals of Scouting. Inducted members, known as Arrowmen or Brothers, number more than 180,000 youth and adults. Members wear identifying insignia on their uniforms, most no-tably the OA sash, and are eligible for special

OA awards. The OA program sponsors several events, awards, and training functions.

Eagle Scout and Astronaut Joe Tanner

Selected as an as-tronaut in 1992, Tanner first flew aboard the space shuttle Atlantis on the STS-66 Atmos-pheric Laboratory for Applications and Science-3 mis-sion in 1994. He then made two spacewalks to ser-vice the Hubble Space Telescope on STS-82 in 1997. Tanner's third mission was STS-97 in 2000 on Endeav-our's flight to the International Space Station to install the first set of U.S. solar arrays, during which he did three spacewalks. On his last flight, Tanner's crew installed another set of solar arrays, continuing construction of the sta-tion on STS-115 in 2006. He conducted two spacewalks.

Tanner is a senior instructor in the aerospace engineering sciences department at the Univer-sity of Colorado in Boulder.

Boys of the Town

After years of individually exploring various musical genres, these three friends teamed up for a benefit performance last year for Treasure Valley and discovered a common love: Celtic-based music. They have been performing to-gether regularly since then. With Eagle Scout John Ebersold on guitar and vocals, Life Scout (soon to be Eagle) Hunter Foote on fiddle and Eagle Scout Tim Loftus on flute, whistle and bodhrán, the Boys of the Town deliver top-shelf entertainment from high energy, toe-tapping jigs and reels to heartfelt ballads.

(continued from inside cover) (Save Our American Resources) that focused on environmental abuse. With this program, scouts led the way to clean up waterways, lakes, parks and recreational properties. Scout training in emergency preparedness was relied upon in the aftermath of the 1938 hurri-cane, the 1979 tornado, and the ice storm of 2008. Today, scouts are being prepared for a response to the Asian long-horned beetle epi-demic. They will aid with the removal of in-fected trees and plant saplings in their place.
