Arts Department OverviewThe Centenary SHS Arts Department has a strong reputation throughout the local community and beyond… and with good reason. The department is renowned for presenting concerts, exhibitions and musical productions of an exceptional standard. Since the school opened in 1999, the department has tackled such challenging and diverse shows as Jesus Christ Superstar, Fame, Grease, Tommy and The Wizard of Oz.

The department is staffed by a passionate and creative group of educators who delight in the challenge of sharpening the skills, honing the talents and broadening the minds of their students. The department offers comprehensive courses covering each of the five strands – Drama, Dance, Music, Visual Art and Film/Media – from Year 7 to Year 12. In addition to our regular classes, Centenary SHS offers extension arts subjects in Performance and Music. Apart from the curriculum classes we also provide many opportunities for students to engage in the arts in co-curricular and extra-curricular settings. These opportunities are outlined throughout this document.

The facilities at Centenary SHS include a purpose built $7 million centre for performing and creative arts, including a fully air conditioned venue with industry standard sound and lighting. Many members of the arts faculty have extensive industry experience with staff having performed with organisations such as The Australian Ballet, The Queensland Ballet, Queensland Theatre Company, Australian Youth Orchestra, Queensland Symphony Orchestra and numerous amateur and semi-professional organisations.

MusicMusic at Centenary SHS encompasses a wide range of opportunities and directions. Broadly the music program is divided into two areas: classroom music and the Instrumental and Choral Music program. Music is offered as an elective subject from Year 9 through to Year 12, as well as forming part of the experience of ‘The Arts’ in Years 7 and 8. For students who have advanced musical skills we offer an extension program in Years 7 and 8 called Music Plus, and also the full OP-eligible Authority subject of Music Extension in Year 12. Topics covered include Rock and Roll, Film Music, Musical Theatre and Popular Classics.

The Junior school Music Plus programs allows students with a strong interest and talent in music the chance to develop their skills in a dedicated environment. Students perform, compose and analyse a range of music and performers to further improve their own skills. Auditions are held for this course in the previous year and places are limited.

The performing groups at the school include:

PerformanceCentenary SHS has a fine tradition of providing quality opportunities in the area of performance (Dance and Drama) with regular and extension programs (Performance Plus in Years 7-9) and Dance and Drama as separate subjects in the Senior school. Students studying these subjects have the opportunity to perform in public and work alongside industry professionals as part of our association and partnership with the Queensland Theatre Company and RAW Dance Company. DanceDance is a language of movement where the potential of the body as an instrument of communication is realised. Exploring differing contexts, genres and styles, Dance fosters a critical awareness of the aesthetic values of others, within and across cultures, and social groups. The Dance Program at Centenary SHS provides opportunities for students to critically examine their experiences and understandings of dance and dance forms, exploring the interrelationship between practical and theoretical aspects of dance.

Dance is offered as an elective from Year 10, including as a Senior Authority (OP) subject in Years 11 and 12 and would suit students with a passion and interest in all styles of Dance. Students have the opportunity to view and analyse professional Dance productions as well as participate in professional workshops with companies like RAW Dance Company. A study in Senior Dance also provides students with opportunities to use and explore a range of technologies, and to develop an understanding of the impact of those technologies on creation, performance and analysis of dance. Students are encouraged to examine the ways in which other art forms challenge, shape and influence the creation of dance performances. Students who have graduated from this program have been successful in auditioning for programs such as QUT Dance, Brent Street Dance, ED5, RAW Dance Company Pre-Professional Program, ADPI and Harvest Rain Musical Theatre Program.

DramaDrama is a unique art form that re-presents and re-enacts experiences, ideas, stories and emotions. In the subject Drama, students have opportunities to learn about a range of forms and styles of the dramatic art form and gain understandings of human experiences in different cultures, times and places. Drama is offered as an elective from Year 10, including as a Senior Authority (OP) subject in Years 11 and 12 and would suit students with a passion and interest in all styles of Drama. Students are provided with opportunities to view live professional work and engage in workshops with organisations like Queensland Theatre Company.

Engaging in drama promotes imagination, critical thinking, problem solving, cultural engagement and communication, and provides opportunities to share ideas with others through informal and formal performances. Students engage in learning experiences that integrate oral, kinaesthetic and visual communication to create aesthetic and artistic meaning. Graduates from the Centenary SHS drama program have been successful in auditioning to tertiary programs that have included NIDA, Stagecraft, QUT Acting and Drama, Griffith University Theatre Studies, Harvest Rain Musical Theatre Program.

Visual ArtVisual Art at Centenary SHS offers engaging courses that instil in students the ability to create diverse, meaningful and vibrant art works. Creative communication, problem solving and personal reflection are key to developing each student’s artistic practice. In Years 7 and 8, students participate in some group and individual Visual Art tasks within the broad creative subject ‘The Arts’. Students have the opportunity to study Visual Art as an elective unit in Years 9 and 10 where students develop their skills in drawing, design, printmaking, painting, sculpture, ceramics, and digital photography. Students engaged in the Visual Art course also have the opportunity in the design and creation of set, prop and costume design for school musicals and performances. Many of our senior graduates have continued their studies into tertiary under graduate and diploma courses in Visual Art, Design, Fine Arts and Animation with great success.

Extra Curricular OpportunitiesThe Instrumental and Choral Program is a co-curricular program that is a continuation of the primary school instrumental program for brass, percussion, strings and woodwind students. Students participate in an ensemble and weekly group lessons, as well as participating in many performances throughout the school year.

Mention has already been made of the flagship musical productions which are presented annually. In addition to these, the school frequently produces music events which bring together the choirs and bands along with dance and film. These are highly regarded by the community and offer students another opportunity to excel in their artistic endeavours.

There are also Arts activities outside of the school that students are offered the opportunity to participate in. These include Creative Generation (music, singing, dance, visual art and backstage), Dance Showcase, Backstage Crew, Drama and Music nights, Art Exhibitions, community ANZAC services, GenX Unleashed, and a variety of competitions, festivals and exhibitions.

In all, The Arts at Centenary SHS offers students a range of high quality opportunities to develop their skills to a level of excellence through a variety of inspiring events and activities both within the school and in the local community.
