CYC 2017 Update

Last week at one point I logged 20 hours of driv-ing time within a 50 hour span. As one travels that much he or she often re-flects upon anything to keep the mind alert. However, often while traveling there are nui-sances that hinder our progress. I was alone so the length of time travel-ing was kept to a mini-mum. (It is amazing how much time is reduce when traveling by your-self instead of with a family of 5, plus dogs.) Yet, on the trip home a great distraction plagued my journey.

I left Portland, Tennessee on Tuesday where it was a cold and blustery day, where even Winnie the Pooh would have shuddered. The dew point was high and the rain at a slow drizzle. The tem-perature slowly rose as a headed home to Booneville, but the mois-ture level kept to a burdensome high. I constantly adjusted my defrost setting as my windows would fog every few minutes. Further, the heaviness of the wind restricted travel speed to a hair below the speed limit. At times it seemed that it was taking

forever, on a trip that passed by like a breeze going.

As I reflect, in life we often are hit with hindrances. Maybe it is finances, health, family, job, or simple depression that restrict us from accomplishing our goals. Far too often we begin New Year’s resolutions with dreams of hope crushed by a flood of life annoyances.

I think we must always remain focus and keep our eyes on the prize that lays ahead. I knew last week that if I persevered a bed at home awaited. Family who great-ly loved me anticipated and yearned for my return. The draw of home fueled my return. What

fuel our hope and daily life as Chris-tians? Reflect on the following passages for perseverance in your life journey.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with en-durance the race that is set before us, (2) looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seat-ed at the right hand of the throne of God. (3) Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against him-self, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. (ESV, Hebrews 12:1-3)

(24) Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. (25) Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a per-ishable wreath, but we an imperishable. (26) So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. (27) But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (ESV, 1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

If we can persevere through our adver-sity, our confidence will be at Paul’s con-cerning his ultimate destination.

For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my de-parture has come. (7) I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. (8) Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteous-ness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing. (ESV, 2 Timothy 4:6-8)

With Love,

Jim Bradshaw
