Learn How to Take Better Photos 107Diane Lansing, MA, Expressive Therapies; retired Art Teacher, Liverpool Central School District; and Exhibiting ArtistGood photos are more about the person behind the camera than the kind of camera one uses. Rather than simply taking snapshots that record a person or place, why not learn how to take photos that not only document the subject matter but also are interesting to look at? In the first class, you will learn about lighting, composition, point of view, how to steady the camera, selected focus and much more. These topics will be covered in a slideshow illustrating what to do — and not do — to improve your picture-taking. In the second class, we will view the (anonymously projected) photos you have taken and see how other class participants tackled the broadly defined topics assigned to be shot over the intervening two weeks. We will all share helpful feedback on the images viewed. This class is for the beginner or the person who wants to step up their awareness and skill of good picture-taking.
Note: Participants will need to bring a digital camera (point and shoot, DSLR, or smartphone) to class as well as have knowledge of how to transfer those photos from camera to computer and then to a flash drive. Please bring the assigned photos you selected to share with the class, pre-loaded on your flash drive.Tuesdays Jul 26 - Aug 9 10:30 - 12:30 Fee: $26 2 sessions OASIS StudioNo class 8/2

Music: a Means of Survival 131Elizabeth Canfield, M.Mus. in Piano Performance, classical Pianist, Piano Instructor, former adjunct faculty, Bowling Green State University and Owens Community College; and member of duo piano team Duo CanfieldDespite the destruction and peril of WWII, music permeated the darkest corners of the world and brought light and hope to people facing the horrors of war. Whether in concentration camps, on battlefields or the home front, brave men and women continued to sing, play and compose to keep their souls alive. This course will explore how music literally became a means of survival during WWII.Thursdays May 26 - Jun 16 3:00 - 4:00 Fee: $28 4 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall
Adventures in Listening: The Great 132Irish Tenor John Harvith, BA, Music History, and JD; coauthor with Susan Edwards Harvith Edison, Musicians, and the Phonograph; former professional music critic; and interviewer of legendary musiciansJohn McCormack (1884-1945) was the exemplar of the great lyric tenor and arguably the first successful “crossover” artist, equally at home singing schubert and Irving Berlin, opera arias and songs of sentiment. He sang this eclectic repertoire with perfect diction, sterling musicianship, and the utmost respect for the composer’s intent. He established new performance standards for singers of classical and popular songs, treating everything he sang with equal attention to verbal and musical meaning. In the course of his long career, he sang to sold-out houses in major opera and concert halls here and abroad and at the mecca of vaudeville, the Hippodrome, introducing many listeners to classical music while elevating familiar popular songs to a level of performance artistry hitherto unknown. This course will teach students to discern those qualities that comprised the distinctive greatness of McCormack’s vocalism, comparing it to other tenors of his time such as Caruso and Gigli and playing recordings from all periods of his career, some with operatic colleagues like Dame Nellie Melba and Emmy Destinn, others with violinist Fritz Kreisler, and the remainder tenor solos. Like Irish minstrels of old, McCormack was a unique storyteller capable of moving his listeners to elation or tears, something students in this course will learn to appreciate.Wednesday Jun 1 1:00 - 4:00 Fee: $21 1 session OASIS Lecture Hall
Adventures in Listening: It’s All a 133 Matter of Interpretation John Harvith, BA, Music History, and JD; coauthor with Susan Edwards Harvith Edison, Musicians, and the Phonograph; former professional music critic; and interviewer of legendary musiciansarturo Toscanini once wrote, “Blessed are the arts which can survive without interpreters.” While visual artists and filmmakers communicate directly with audiences, the creators of Western classical music have had to rely on intermediaries — performing musicians — to interpret the written symbols and words these composers set down on paper to indicate how they wished their works to be brought to life. Thus it’s the responsibility of classical musicians to follow composers’ instructions to arrive at both the letter and spirit of the music they perform. Just as there are many valid ways to play a given work, there are also invalid ones that radically change the meaning and impact of a piece of music in ways the composer never intended. students will hear recordings by “name” musicians — from Heifetz, Rubinstein, and Toscanini to Glenn Gould, stokowski and Furtwangler — some giving glowing but differing interpretations that are equally valid, others playing fast and loose with the scores entrusted to them with startling results. This course, which will focus on these interpretive differences, is designed to sharpen students’ listening skills, providing the tools and insight to appreciate musical performance in a new and more meaningful way.Wednesday Jun 15 1:00 - 4:00 Fee: $21 1 session OASIS Lecture Hall

The Fantasy World of Woody Allen: 134 an 80th Birthday Salute Susan Edwards Harvith, MMP Museum Practice, the University of Michigan; former Syracuse University faculty member; and interviewer of legendary film and television figuresNever before in the 110-year history of feature-length film has there been anyone like actor/screenwriter/director Woody allen, who has been making cinema masterpieces year after year for nearly a half-century with no signs of letting up, even at the age of 80! More remarkable yet is the fact that, like Verdi and Matisse, he has been doing some of his most inventive and meaningful work as an elder. Whereas his earliest work reveled in slapstick comedy and sight gags, his mature films use the genre of fantasy leavened with humor to probe issues of life and death, the ache of loneliness, the nature of love and human relationships, the definition of happiness — in short, the very meaning of human existence. This course will explore more than 40 years of his work, analyzing the novel techniques he has brought to film; the new insights he has provided by re-creating life in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s; the unique methods he employs in the behind-the-scenes making of his films. The seven works to be discussed and viewed will range from 1972’s Play It Again, Sam and 1985’s The Purple Rose of Cairo to 1994’s Bullets Over Broadway and 2014’s Magic in the Moonlight.

From Out of the Past: 1940s Filmmakers 135Travel to Victorian EnglandSusan Edwards Harvith, MMP Museum Practice, the University of Michigan; former Syracuse University faculty member; and interviewer of legendary film and television figuresDuring the 1940s, U.s. filmmakers — many of them émigrés from Europe (including such directors as John Brahm, Henry Koster and Robert siodmak) — produced visually stunning films showing troubled protagonists trapped within dark and twisted worlds. Viewing these films now, one sees in them the tensions of a society coping with World War II and its aftermath. The angst of the times is played out onscreen in films firmly grounded within the flamboyant, eerily dramatic visual style of German Expressionism. This course will explore undeservedly obscure films as well as seminal ones from this period, all costume dramas set within the confined, closeted and murky world of Victorian-era England. seven features will be discussed and screened, all of them adapted from literary works, and will include such genres as mystery, crime, suspense and romance. The films are Jane Eyre, Hangover Square, Ivy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Suspect, The Lodger and My Cousin Rachel. among the stars are Ingrid Bergman, Orson Welles, Joan Fontaine, Richard Burton, spencer Tracy, Charles Laughton, Laird Cregar, Linda Darnell and Olivia de Havilland, who will be saluted with a party on the occasion of her actual 100th birthday, July 1.

Words in Your Ears 136Peter Moller, MA, Emeritus Professor, Film and Television, Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse UniversityOur days are filled with images. They surround us, they dazzle, they persuade and they sometimes annoy. But there is another world of sound that may not be as pervasive. This course presents four examples of the spoken word:June 6 — The audio book. Children’s book author Bruce Coville will present the work of his company, Full Cast audio, which produces award-winning books on tape. Coville travels the world spreading the word to book publishers, educators and children about the rich experience of stories told with voices. June 13 — Poetry aloud. Four well-known poets who live in Central NY do public performances of their ekphrastic poetry. The Ekphrastic Four will perform their poetry accompanied by the music and images that inspired them.June 20 — Reader’s Theater. Often called script-in-hand productions, these theatrical events are a part of the schedule on big and small stages all over the world. In syracuse, the armory square Playwrights present readings from their member writers once a month during the year. These readings give playwrights an inexpensive and constructive venue to test their dramatic ideas before they move to fully staged productions. The playwrights will read a new script and ask for comments and critiques from the class.June 27 — Radio drama. If you thought the aural delights of Fibber Magee and The Shadow were lost in the past, Mark Lavonier will persuade you otherwise. Lavonier, host of WRVO-FM’s popular Tuned to Yesterday, will talk about archival radio broadcasts and how he selects the scary and the funny to delight audiences every day of the week in the middle of the night.Mondays Jun 6 - Jun 27 10:00 - 11:30 Fee: $28 4 sessions OASIS Lecture Hall

Passport to Crime 138Wendy Davenport, MA, British and American Literature, retired drama coach, high school and college English Teacher and OASIS leadership team memberalthough many of our most popular mysteries are based in america or the British Isles, some outstanding detective stories take place in a myriad of countries world-wide. Examining the harsh cold of sweden, the canals of Venice, Italy, exotic aspects of south Korea, semi-civilized portions of australia and remote areas of south africa, we will explore works by authors whose settings enhance and enrich their works.
Kerry Greenwood’s Cocaine Blues introduces Phryne Fisher in Melbourne; Malla Nunn’s Detective Emmanuel Cooper deals with apartheid issues in A Beautiful Place to Die; Jade Lady Burning uses Ernie Bascom and George sueno to investigate; Death in la Fenice by Donna Leon involves Commissario Guido Brunetti; and Helene Tursten’s Detective Inspector Huss is on the case in Goteborg, sweden.
all of these successful novels began a series of adventures for their various characters and readers. In each, the settings are crucial to the plot development and often appear as characters themselves. With brief lectures, seminar discussions and film excerpts, we will examine how the settings enhance each book. Note: Please read Cocaine Blues for the first session.Monday Jun 20 - Jul 25 1:00 - 3:00 Fee: $36 5 sessions OASIS StudioNo class 7/4

Ethnic America: 1607-1965 145Charles Coon, retired Social Studies Teacher, adjunct Professor of History, Onondaga Community College and SUNY College at Cortland, and adjunct Professor of Educational Methods, SUNY College at OswegoWe have already focused on immigration since 1965. Now we’ll go backward, starting with the founding of Jamestown by English immigrants in 1607. Discussion will revolve around some distinctive periods in american History: (1) the Colonial Period, which saw immigrants coming from five major areas — England, scotland, Ireland (the so-called scots-Irish), Germany and africa; (2) the period from 1790, when the first immigration law was passed, to about 1870, with a major focus on immigration from Ireland and the German states and the development of some very strong anti-immigrant sentiment in the Us; (3) the period from about 1880 to 1920, when the sources of immigration changed dramatically, from western and northern Europe to eastern and southern Europe and East asia, and prejudices against these immigrants emerged based on “scientific evidence of racial inferiority and superiority;” (4) the immigration laws written in the 1920s that were biased in favor of “old immigrant” groups; and (5) the impact of a variety of refugee crises in the post-WW II years. The class will conclude with the Immigration and Nationality act of 1965.
Five elements will permeate the discussions:1. Why did people emigrate? 2. The numbers.3. How the immigrants were received.4. The assimilation — or lack thereof — into mainstream
american society.5. Proposals for restrictive legislation and their effect on
american society.Note: Class meets 6/6, 6/13, 6/20, 6/27, 7/25 and 8/1.Mondays Jun 6 - Aug 1 1:00 - 2:30 Fee: $48 6 sessions OASIS Lecture HallNo class 7/4, 7/11 & 7/18

Buffalo–City of Presidents Fall Tour 602 (Double Occupancy) Richard O’Neil, Travel Choice International, and Tom Henry, MS, retired Social Studies/History Teacher and HistorianJoin Travel Choice International and OasIs Instructor Tom Henry for a 3-day/2-night trip to Buffalo, NY. Trip departs from OasIs Monday morning, October 17, 2016, and returns Wednesday evening, October 19, 2016. Included in the cost are two nights at the beautiful Hampton Inn Downtown Buffalo, all admissions, five meals, local guide, round-trip motorcoach transportation and all taxes and gratituities.
What better place to visit in an election year than Buffalo, which has ties with five famous men who became presidents of the United states? Buffalo is proud to claim this roster of men — Millard Fillmore, abraham Lincoln, Grover Cleveland, William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt — who either started their careers in Buffalo or visited there during their terms of office. For them Buffalo was indeed the road to the White House and into the pages of history.
October 17 (Monday): Upon arrival, meet the local guide and enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in the Elmwood Village District. Visit the original Buffalo City Hall, where Grover Cleveland began his law career, and view statues of Fillmore and Cleveland in the current art deco City Hall, as well as the 1907 William McKinley monument in Niagara square. The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural site, a National Historic Landmark, highlights Roosevelt’s Presidential Oath of Office, taken upon McKinley’s assassination at Buffalo’s Pan american Exposition of 1901. see Roosevelt’s statue, a media show and the library where the oath was taken. Have dinner at the landmark Chef’s Restaurant downtown. (D)
October 18 (Tuesday): after breakfast at the hotel, visit Graycliff, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home for a guided tour. This summer place of the Darwin Martin family on cliffs overlooking Lake Erie features the natural architecture for which Wright was famous. The house is midway through a total restoration.
Housed in a 1902 building, the Roycroft Campus Copper shop is home to the works of over 100 artisans. Explore handmade pieces in wood, metal, glass, ceramics, print and more. The Roycroft Power House next door offers artifacts, souvenirs, a visitors’ center and art gallery. Then have lunch at The Roycroft Inn in an arts and Crafts Movement atmosphere.
Next, stop at the Millard Fillmore House for a guided tour of this 1826 home where Fillmore once lived, which showcases authentic Fillmore and period pieces. The Buffalo History Museum Resource Center hosts a William McKinley Room featuring pictures, artifacts and his Exposition speech, along with the pistol used in his assassination. Then take in the Tim Russert exhibit, highlighting this journalist’s career. Dinner follows at the popular Templeton Landing on the Buffalo waterfront. (B, L, D)
October 19 (Wednesday): after your hotel breakfast, visit the Darwin Martin House, another Frank Lloyd Wright design, for a guided tour. This 10,000-square-foot home, one of the best examples of Wright’s Prairie style, is in the final phase of a 22-year restoration. Then stop at the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum and see the vast collection of monuments on display. View the sizable Presidential Portrait series of paintings by artist Lawrence Williams, which includes First Ladies too. Lunch at Wegmans Market Cafe or elsewhere.
Next, visit historic Forest Lawn Cemetery and Wendt archives for a tour of the exhibit “Presidents in Buffalo,” as well as a guided walk to the Millard Fillmore family burial site. Nearby is the gravesite of 1972 presidential candidate shirley Chisholm.
Finally, the tour group will go to Pierce arrow Motor Transportation Museum, which features Buffalo’s automobile history. see Frank Lloyd Wright’s gas station; the Brunn Carriage, like the vehicle in which McKinley took his last ride; a bullet-proof Pierce arrow, the car that J. Edgar Hoover and Roosevelt each had; and the official White House Pierce arrow car. Then return to syracuse via motorcoach. (B)
