Vice Chancellor

Professor Watson Omulokoli was installed as the Chancellor of Africa International University during the award of the charter

ceremony on 4th March, 2011. In his address as chancellor, Professor Omulokoli emphasized that AIU will strive to offer quality education with integrity.

“As we receive the Charter today as Africa International University, the commitment we make to you, Your Excellency, to your Government, to our nation, to Africa, and to our students, is that we will always seek to offer quality education with integrity. We are convinced that the national development and progress we all desire depends in a large measure not simply on provision of education, or even simply on quality education, but rather, on quality education with a difference.

Your Excellency, like Yale University, Africa International University sets out the priority of pursuing “excellence in undergraduate education and to the education of leaders in scholarship, the professions, and public life”.

In keeping with our operational philosophy and practice, our focus, in this context, will include the following three key guiding elements:

First, given that the academic component is the priority of our institution, we aim at scaling the highest heights of academic and intellectual excellence as the core of its essence.

Secondly, with our Christian heritage, we

are committed to delving in the deepest depths of spiritual anchorage as its indispensable foundation.

Thirdly, in the social public arena, we undertake to pursue our mandate with the wide breadth of ethico-moral integrity, as a corporate entity, and on the individual level.

Your Excellency, as we carry all this out, we peer into the future with boundless optimism through the lens of the words of the Apostle Paul,

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has imagined, what God has prepared” for us at Africa International University.”

Currently, Prof. Omulokoli is a Yale University Visiting Fellow, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. for the 2010-2011 Academic Year, as well as a Research Scholar at the Overseas Ministries Study Center (OMSC).

Dean’s article

“May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us,

For the last 28years, NEGST has experienced God’s favor as it has faithfully trained Christ-centered leaders with

ISAR

ISAR

The mission of ISAR is to transform persons, churches, and African societies toward greater realization of Jesus’ vision of a just

and peaceful community by means of educational initiatives both formal and non-formal. The leadership development initiatives undertaken by ISAR are designed to result in the following outcomes:

CHRISTIAN VALUES FOR NATION-BUILDING – Christ’s teachings and values have relevance for every area of life in Africa today. We seek to explore the implications of the Word of God for all of life. We look to prepare leaders who will participate in the strengthening of the economic

and political systems in their nations. At ISAR, we seek to nurture African “statesman” who will be distinguished by the compelling wisdom of their solutions for the complexities of African society.

EVANGELICAL SCHOLARSHIP -- ISAR was created to provide an environment in which Christians committed to historic, orthodox Christian beliefs can engage in scholarly research. The central convictions of the “evangelical”

community are the complete truthfulness of the Bible as the written Word of God and the pivotal significance of the death and resurrection of Jesus. Leaders will explore the depths of meaning to be found in these central doctrines of the evangelical faith and seek to articulate the implications of God’s ultimate self-disclosure for every sphere of contemporary African experience.

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES -- God is Creator of all things. Jesus Christ is Redeemer and reigning Lord of all of Creation. Therefore the scope of Christian research and analysis must not be limited. The values and wisdom of the Christian worldview must be articulated as they inform every sphere of knowledge. Leaders from various fields of study will do interdisciplinary research in order to articulate the insights and imperatives of Scripture as they impact every dimension of African experience.

RESEARCH AND WRITING -- The continued maturing of the African Christian movement requires the creation of written resources from African scholars to nourish minds and hearts. ISAR provides an environment for scholars and practitioners to engage in scholarly research initiatives which explore issues related to Christian faith and African society. (Our capacity includes: accommodation and board; internet access; excellent library resources; consultation with theological scholars; transport; field research opportunities;) long and short term.

Christian scholarship must not be an end in itself. The final measurement of the authenticity of the work of a Christian scholar is that his or her work reflects in its ethos “the mind of Christ”. In

ISAR PROGRAMMESMaster of Arts in Organizational LeadershipThe objective of the Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership program is to provide an interactive educational experience which results in qualitative change in the leader´s life, relationships, and leadership practices. It focuses on the specific needs and issues facing Christian leaders in organizations serving in Africa.

Entry Requirements:Any recognized bachelors degree with a GPA of 3.0 or 2nd Class Upper Division. Applicants with GPA of 2.75 or 2nd Lower can qualify with 2 years’ post bachelor work/ministry experience. MAOL needs 5 yrs post-degree leadership experience

Doctor of MinistryThe Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) is an advanced, professional theological degree for pastors and other Christian leaders in church, non-governmental organizations, and mission communities. In keeping with the vision of AIU “Christ centered leaders in Africa educated to transform God’s people and world”, this program seeks to address itself to the unique needs and opportunities of ministry in the African context. Designed primarily as in-service continuing education for working pastors, it seeks to integrate the wisdom of ministry experience with the highest levels of theological reflection. This process involves a series of modular seminars, year-round reading and writing assignments, and mentoring, culminating in a publishable ministry-based research dissertation.

Entry Requirements. In addition to the minimum entrance requirements for every university programme, all applicants for admission to the Doctor of Ministry programme shall meet the following requirements:

a) Normally, an applicant will a. possess a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited institution of higher learning with a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 GPA or B

b) Students who have earned the b. degree of Master of Arts in a theological discipline will also be considered for admission. The Master of Arts degree must be from an accredited institution of higher learning with a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 GPA or B. Because the D.Min. presupposes that the applicant has a broad background in Biblical, Theological and Pastoral disciplines, the transcript of the M.A. applicant will be evaluated by the Director of the Doctor of Ministry Programme. School of Professional

StudiesWe live in a world of change and

diversity and the freedom of choice is celebrated in all areas of life. The

computer information technology, globalization, democratization and pluralism have drastically changed the way people live today. While many believe that life is improving for people living in Africa as a result of change and diversity, many more continue to describe Africa as a broken continent. The brokenness of Africa as seen in poverty, wars, corruption, ethnic violence, etc continue to be more profound and pervasive. In this diversity and change, we need a system of higher education that integrates the teachings of

Scripture about our brokenness and academics, an education that is at the cutting edge of technology and professionalism, a system that is affordable and relevant to our context. The school of professional studies provides such education.

The school is established to serve the African professional community in fostering the integration of academic, faith and professionalism in the diverse vocations Christians find themselves in as an attempt to bridge the gap between classical

courses offered in the field and the needs of society. The school attempts to bring acceptable professions under the authority of Christ in celebrating his Lordship in all domains of the life of the Christian. In addition to being a top class school on the cutting edge of technology, professionalism, and contextual relevance, the school of professional studies is different from other universities in the following ways:

The school receives its mandate foremost ►from Scripture. Colossians 1 provides the basis for us to celebrate the supremacy of Christ in all things. We attempt to make Christ the centre of all learning in all domains of knowledge. Our courses are designed and taught ►by academically qualified professionals, entreprenuers, employers and others in the corporate world. This ensures that our students learn directly from the experiences of people working in the professional worldOur courses do not only integrate ►knowledge and the disciplines, but they integrate knowledge and life together. We see the students as wholistic individuals growing like Jesus Christ in body, mind and spirit. The school provides the avenues for the students to grow in these dimensions of life

It is our pleasure to partner with God in helping you to meet your professional aspirations through our School of Professional Studies—a place where God transforms people who transform their community.

Kuot, Madut Tong Ngor, SudanThe busy time of AIU students is the one that everyone will never forget in addition to the wonderful community which includes different nationalities of Africa, Europe, Asia and America. The bond fires at the students’ compound are unforgettable plus the interaction in the grace groups, alongside our academic time in class and library. After graduation I will go back to my country to apply what the aiu has imparted in me in my ministry. I will make use of the skills I have learned to impact my students in the Nile theological school where I taught for

two years and Gereif west bible school where I taught for more than 10 years. I would also like to pursue more studies at the level of PhD in this wonderful institution in near future.Parting shot: I view AIU as an excellent place to come and study for effective future ministry. It is a place where you meet with highly qualified professors to guide you step by step to the right way in order to enrich one’s life and ministry. I love this place because it reminds me of what the apostle Paul says in the book of Colossians (1:28). 0714197027, [email protected], [email protected]

Kathuri, Joseph Kinyua, KenyaAt first, the cultural diversity, rigor of class work, reflections on transformed life, chapel services and warmth of the singles fellowship grabbed my attention. Currently, I serve as the Communications Manager for a Christian organization. I am excited about developing comprehensive and effective communication systems for the institution. This role helps support and

actively engages in the advancing of the gospel of Jesus and His kingdom to the nation.Parting shot: Romans 5:3-5 sums up my class experience at AIU and encouragement to fellow students: “… but also we rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Ayecheluhim, Solomon Getachew, Ethiopia My most memorable moment at AIU/NEGST has been God’s miraculous provision in time of need. I and my family have had to trust and wait the Lord for each single cent throughout my study. I can say that God is still a miracle doer who does mighty deeds in order to fulfill His will in His people’s lives. My trust in Him has been immensely increased during my three years stay at AIU. After graduation I will be working for the Ethiopian Guenet Church national office as the head of the

We visited the Hare Krishna temple in Ngara on 12th November 2009 to observe their religious activities. We tasted their food and joined them in their worship. I felt like a backslidder, but remembered - to reach the unreached, one has to try and learn their culture. It was wonderful to witness the university receive a Charter from the president. Prof. Watson Omulokoli, was installed as chancellor and I saw it as a great honor to my church. After Graduation I will continue serving

SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY HON. MWAI KIBAKI, C.G.H., M.P., PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE DEFENCE FORCES OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA DURING THE AWARD OF CHARTER TO AFRICA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, KAREN, NAIROBI, 4TH MARCH, 2011

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am pleased to join you for the award of Charter to Africa International University. This University becomes the 13th private university in Kenya to have attained full accreditation status.

I congratulate all those who have made this possible. I especially commend the sponsors for their immense efforts which have culminated in the actualization of their dream of a university.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Charter that this University has been awarded is a mark of quality. It signifies that the University has met the necessary requirements

for a fully-fledged university. You must now keep up and even better the standards that convinced the Commission of Higher Education that you were ready for the award of Charter. Indeed, I am happy to note that this university already has a rich history.

This institution has been at the forefront in providing post graduate theological training to Christian leaders in Kenya and the African continent. I am aware, that many of the inspiring and effective Protestant leaders in Africa, have been trained in this institution. You have played an important role, in ensuring that the men and women who serve in our churches are equipped with necessary ministry skills. I am confident that the award of this charter will help towards making this institution a world renowned university that serves humanity.

I am pleased, that you have recently begun offering Doctor of Philosophy programs. Doctoral students, play a key role in research

and development of new ideas. It is my hope that your P.H.D. students, will engage with the challenges and needs facing African Christianity with a view of coming up with viable solutions.

My challenge to you is that, as you expand into secular fields, you should always keep your sights on your core mandate of training students who will always be sensitive to religious values in the pursuit of their careers and calling in life.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

My Government has stepped up its efforts in enhancing access, equity and relevance of our higher education. Through this process, the Government has established fifteen university colleges and awarded charter to four private universities over the last three years. As we do this, we are fully aware of the crucial role that middle level tertiary education plays in our economy. We are, therefore, revamping the middle-level training sector in our country.

This will include the establishment of more National Polytechnics and the development of model technical training institutions in all our 47 counties.

Further, the Government has continued to increase financing to the higher and tertiary education sector. This has involved increasing funding to the Higher Education Loans Board in order to support needy students. In this regard, I urge all Kenyans who have benefited from the loans, to repay. This will enable the Government reach more Kenyans, who are in great need of financial support for their higher education.

I also urge universities to supplement efforts by the Government by raising funds for bursaries, scholarships and other financial schemes that enhance access and equity in our higher and tertiary education.

Before I conclude my remarks, I wish to make reference to the constitution that we

promulgated in August last year. One of the remarkable aspects in our constitution is the extent to which it has national guiding policies and values. The Constitution is encouraging us, to develop a system of national values which will give us a new and distinct identity as Kenyans. The faiths sector must help Kenya to broaden the secular dimension of values by contributing to a framework of moral and ethical values. I say this because law in itself, even constitutional norms, devoid of a spiritual foundation of morality and ethics, cannot be a proper basis for an enduring rule of law.

I also wish to remind us, that the Church is one of the institutions that serve as the conscience of society. It has to stand up against injustice and inequality. I wish to emphasize that this university has a responsibility to train and equip leaders who will speak out for the majority members of our society. I encourage you to place special emphasis on social justice

and community development in your curriculum. This will ensure that your graduates are able to meet the holistic needs of our society.

Finally, I once again thank and commend the sponsors of this university, for their foresight and persistence in planning for the development of this institution. My hope is that, you will all continue to develop into a great institution and a centre of excellence in the study and research of African Christianity and its valuable place in modern society.

Thank you and God bless you all.

The journey from being an Evangelical School of Theology to a fully-fledged university has been a tough one – a test of

faith in the classical sense of the word. The Lord’s bounty isn’t limited to matters academic, but encompasses the sports world too.

How else to explain AIU’s win of the annual Nairobi Fellowship of Theological Colleges (NFTC) football tournament twice in a row after a 25 year losing streak?

The first win came in November 2009, when AIU was in pool A, along with Moffat Bible College and the Nairobi International School of Theology (NIST). In the first game against Moffat, each team scored one goal, John Teke scoring for AIU. The game against NIST saw AIU run amok, with a Josh Amwago hat-trick, and a goal each from John Teke, Soren Daalsgard, Edwin Savala and Patroba. Leading pool A, AIU played the runners-up of pool B, the Nairobi Pentecostal Bible College, in the semi-final, scoring five goals. Bar Agwar was on target with a hat-trick, while David Kiniti and John Teke each scored once.

The final against Moffat Bible College ended in a penalty shoot-out after a barren draw in full-time. AIU advanced after scoring 4 times with Dan Odhiambo, Edwin Savala, John Teke and Patroba Maundi on target.

This scenario was to repeat itself a year later. AIU’s football team was at Kabarak University for the NFTC tournament. The team beat their hosts 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out in the final, courtesy of Tobias Omollo, Eliud Kangethe, Patroba Maundi and team Captain John Teke.

The man of the match was AIU’s goalkeeper Sammy Kiarie after he saved a penalty.

En route to the final, AIU defeated Moffat 5-4 on penalties in the semi-finals, while Kabarak University thrashed Scott University 3-0.

The Lord’s grace wasn’t just limited to football – podium finishes have been registered by AIU teams in various other sports, including volleyball, table tennis and darts.

In the Pan African Christian University Campus tournament, AIU’s men’s volley ball team finished second after defeating eight universities and colleges before losing to the defending champions Kenya Highlands Bible College.

It was a heated encounter, with a spectacular performance from the likes of David Fugoyo, Joshua Lusato, Andy Alo, George Ogallo, James Sinkua,

Saul Mulama, Kamande Thuo, Justice Mutuku, Enoch Banda and Diana Nyamai - the only lady in the team.

In table tennis, AIU’s defending champions - Teke John and Martin Njuguna - grabbed a silver medal as they finished second in the Table Tennis doubles. The Darts competition, saw Elijah Chelule also finish second with a silver medal and a trophy.
