reaching Out to the Community

Dr. Bushell has championed the spirit of service throughout his career. He has provided humanitarian dental care by visiting different parts of the world numerous times as a volunteer, and helped to donate dental equipment and supplies to the needy areas overseas. He deeply cares about people who are in need.

Since the Mission of Mercy came to Connecticut, Dr. Bushell never missed the opportunity to help. Dr. Bushell is truly the enduring example of giving and sharing of our professional care.

Thank you, Dr. Bushell for your dedication, undying support and hard work. We wish you well in your retirement.

Bruce Cha, DMDConnecticut Mission of Mercy Endo Lead

A Special notefrom a patient

This year I volunteered at the Mission of Mercy (MOM) in Waterbury. This was my second MOM. Last year, prior to the event in Middletown a colleague got up at a local dental meeting and described his experience at his first MOM. I decided then to sign-up. I was looking for a way to give back and this forum couldn’t have been more ideal.

When I arrived at my first event at 6:00 am in a downpour there were at least a couple of hundred people standing in line outside the building. From the moment I stepped inside I was awed by the degree of organization. There was an army of volunteers of all ages besides the hundred or so treating pedodontists, oral surgeons, hygienists, endodontists and general dentists. There was a pharmacy, a sterilization area and any kind of dental supply you would need.

I treated about ten patients a day with the help of a volunteer dental assistant. The patients were all in need of extensive dental care. Every tooth I treated was followed up by a restoration. To say that these patients were appreciative would be an understatement.

During both MOM events, which I volunteered, my patients consisted of a mixed bag of need. There was an Iraq veteran that had returned and was unable to get work. There were a few retirees that were having difficulty making ends meet. There was a single mom that only had a part-time job. They all made me feel like a million dollars by providing a service that they couldn’t afford.

During this past Mission of Mercy I was the recipient of a unique thank you. I seated a young man that was an unemployed graphic artist. After I anaesthetized him I walked away for about ten minutes. When I returned he handed me a pen etching of an orchid that he did on the back of his patient folder. He said he didn’t know if he would be able to thank me when I was done with his root canal and he wanted me to know how much he appreciated my taking the time to volunteer and help him.

I plan on continuing to volunteer at MOM annually.

Dear Friends,Let’s face it. When most of us think about a typical CTMOM patient, we think of a homeless person, a single parent family, a minority or someone who is on state aide. We make this assumption by the way they look, dress or speak. We have been hardwired to believe that these classifications of people are the “typical” CTMOM patient. As we have discovered over the past four years, there is no “typical” CTMOM patient. Most of our patients are average citizens, who at this point in their life need a helping hand. The people standing in that long line throughout the cold night just might be your grandmother or grandfather, mom or dad, brother or sister, other family members or friends. Our point is that our quick assumptions of people’s looks or situations are usually off key. Lives change. Circumstances change. The world changes every second. Unemployment levels across the state and the country are at an all-time high. As you will read on the CTMOM statistic page, our patients truly represent ALL ages, nationalities and come from all walks of life. They swallow their pride and walk through our clinic doors, looking for help while thanking us over and over for relieving them of their pain. We smile and make them feel welcome and then do what we need to do to help them. We are also humbled by the

realization that it could be one of us standing in line needing services.

We should be extremely proud of the accomplishments of Connecticut Mission of Mercy over the last four years. We have served 6,777 people and provided $3,562,336 in free oral healthcare.

It has been asked, how much of a difference can a two day clinic make? Looking at the numbers above is a testimony to what caring volunteers can do. If we make a difference in just one person’s life that allows them to not miss a day of work or school, we have gone a long way toward helping all of society. We believe in the premise that some care is better than no care. By helping people reach a goal of good oral health, we have also given them the opportunity to achieve and maintain good overall health.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks and gratitude to: City of Waterbury, Mayor Michael J. Jarjura, Mr. Joseph Geary and their staff, Waterbury Police Department, Waterbury Fire Department, Waterbury Health Department, Waterbury Department of Public Works, Waterbury Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. David Snead, Principals Robyn Apicella and Michael Lo Russo, and the staff and students of Wilby High School and North End Middle School,

Waterbury Food Services and staff, Waterbury Chamber of Commerce, and the Waterbury Community. Your cooperation before, during and after the event was nothing short of outstanding. We are still in awe of Waterbury’s hospitality. We appreciate all you have done to make this mission a great success!

We would also like to express our undying gratitude and say a big “Thank you” to our Sponsors. Their donations of money, equipment, supplies and food enable us to run this clinic year after year. Please take the time to acknowledge, thank and support them throughout the year. Without their generous support, we would not be able to plan and execute this clinic!

It is with gratitude and heartfelt thanks that we continue to count ourselves fortunate for having the opportunity to share this worthwhile project with so many caring and loving volunteers. By volunteering and giving unselfishly of your time and expertise, you have increased the quality of life for many of our state’s citizens. Be proud of what you have accomplished by joining the CTMOM Team. You are the “True Hero’s,” as without you, there would be no CTMOM!

With deep admiration and appreciation,

From the heartA Family Affair

By BRuCE, SuSAn, EVAn AnD LAuREn TAnDy

BruCe:Six years ago, CSDA President Elect (and soon to be CTMOM’s fearless leader) Bob Schreibman returned from Chicago and grabbed all who would listen.” I just saw the greatest project in the world and we are going to do it in Connecticut.” Calming his visionary tendencies so we could strategize the concept, the future CTMOM leadership quickly bought into the prospect of treating 2,000 needy dental patients over the course of 2 days each year. As we watched a video of thankful patients who had been in pain for years, tears came to our eyes and resolve into our hearts. Just over a year later, Tolland CTMOM was born.

With the event being held in our backyard, I quickly enlisted my wife, Susan, who is the master of local arrangements, to work with Chris Solazzo, lining up local support for the project. My wife and I saw this as a great volunteer opportunity for our children, Lauren and Evan, to help those less fortunate than themselves. Little did we all know what a profound effect this event would have on all of our lives.

SuSAn:They came walking out of the fog in pouring rain. It was three o’clock in the morning as we approached the old, dusty school that was set up to be our mobile dental clinic. In the distance, we were astonished at what we saw. People lined up as far as the eye could see. Just as we had hoped, these weary travelers were able to make the journey into the Connecticut countryside to our first Mission of Mercy. I was overwhelmed by the hundreds of wet faces looking at me, barely visible, hidden under hoods and umbrellas, waiting for our help. Now it was time to do what had taken us solid a year to plan. We forged ahead, knowing so much could go wrong. We were fueled by the strong desire to put our individual talents to use and let these people know someone cared.

My husband, a member of the steering committee, was directing triage. The room was small and crowded with doctors and tables. The air was heavy with nervous energy. This was the first stop for patients and my husband knew how apprehensive they were. Instinct took over and he

put on his “Maitre ‘D hat” and introduced himself to every person with enthusiasm, reassuring them that they were in good hands…literally.

I am not a dentist, food is my “talent,” and I was assigned to make sure everyone was well fed. My first time “walking the line” of patients waiting to be treated was intimidating. I quickly learned that my warm welcoming attitude and smile were absolutely necessary to make people comfortable. I reminded myself that after all, they had never done this before either.

Never had I seen such appreciation for a free snack and water. Never have I had such joy in handing them out. Who knew a cup of hot coffee could make someone so happy? It really made me think about my life and all that I took for granted.

That was four years ago. We had no idea what to expect then, and we have learned so much since. Year after year, our patients come from every corner of our state, and beyond. Each person is wonderfully unique, but on this day they all gather together because they have one thing in common, the need for dental care. You can see this bond bringing patients together, many of them making conversation, joking and helping each other. Maybe for the first-time on this day, they can look around and see that

they are, most definitely, not alone.

Each year, during the Mission of Mercy a wonderful thing happens to our volunteers. Without really knowing it, we put aside our opinions, titles and prejudices. Magically, we work the hardest we have ever worked and expect nothing in return. No paycheck, no gifts, maybe not even a thank you. In the end, everyone is absolutely exhausted but also feel a great sense of accomplishment.

When it is finally done and everyone is packing up, we realize that it is us, the volunteers, who received the greatest gift of all. We were allowed, for a brief time, to give the very best of ourselves.

evAn:When I first started volunteering for the Connecticut Mission of Mercy, I expected to come away with a positive experience, but I couldn’t foresee how much this program would change my life. Driving up to the old high school that was home to our first event, I was shocked to see the line of people. I knew there was going to be people who needed our help, but not this many!

The most special thing about the Mission of Mercy is the atmosphere it creates; the anticipation the night before when the first of the patients begin to line up, the excitement when the first treatments begin, and overall exhaustion and satisfaction when the last patient walks out the door. The Mission of Mercy is truly a special event in that it shows that a group of people can come together and change the lives of thousands of people every year. These selfless people, who put in their time and effort for the sole purpose of helping others, are driven only by the gauze-filled smiles of happy patients, and ask for nothing in return.

I came away from the first Mission of Mercy with a new appreciation for the power of charity. It was unlike anything I had ever done before, and it is something that I would recommend everyone try at least once in their life. Before this event, I felt like I wasn’t able to make a difference in the world around me, but the Mission of Mercy proved me wrong, and for that, I am truly thankful.

lAuren:When I headed back to school after spring break, every class that I attended, the teacher asked something along the lines of “what is your passion?” I knew what came next. We would have to up stand in front of the class and share our answers. When it came to my turn, I had no doubt what I was going to say. I jumped up and said, “My passion is helping people.”

Throughout my life, my family always valued volunteering. It became a way for us to spend time with each other, do something productive and bond. So, I was very excited when I found out that our next project was the Mission of Mercy.

As it turned out, it was the biggest project our family has gotten involved with. Sure, getting up at two in the morning (my bed time), wasn’t too much fun but once we got to the school, I was in awe. It was so early in the morning and there were hundreds of people waiting for us, my family and others, to help them. Many of them had been standing in line all night long.

I have always gone to get a dental check up on time, with no problems, no bills and walking out with my favorite prize, a plastic ring. When I saw all of these people who were in desperate need of the very thing I took for granted, I knew I was going to be changed from this experience. That day, my “volunteering” went from being something of a family affair, to my personal passion.

CTMOM, an integral part of the national America’s Dentists Care Foundation, has provided free dental care for 7,500 patients. With more than 1,600 local volunteers each year, it has provided an opportunity for all those individuals in the caring dental profession and statewide communities to help those who, for one reason or another, have found it necessary to attend our events. As told by my family, the profound effect it has had on all of us will continue to drive our involvement for many years to come. We hope this story will encourage others of all ages and walks of life to give their time, energy, and hearts to this special project. We’ll see everyone in Danbury.

CTMOM at a glance

They stood in line and waited throughout the cold stormy night, hoping to obtain the care they desperately needed…On April 16-17, 2011, the Connecticut Mission of Mercy held a two day dental clinic in Waterbury. Wilby High School and North End Middle School graciously and generously hosted the event at their school campus. Patients were treated on a first-come, first-serve basis. They waited their turn to see a dentist for an initial evaluation and to prioritize dental services needed.

Patients traveled from 186 cities, towns and villages throughout the state to attend the clinic. It should also be noted patients attended the clinic from California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.

The following table lists the number of patients by county/state and percentages:

The vast majority of patients were adults, as only 64 pediatric patients (age 13 and younger) received treatment over the weekend. The utilization of services by adults further proves the definite need for adult services in our state. It is our opinion the number of pediatric patients has decreased due to the increase in Husky providers throughout the state.

When we evaluated the breakdown of ethnic groups, we found the following:

As part of registration, patients were asked about their dental visit history. The following table provides the length of time since their last dental appointment.

Not surprisingly, the vast majority of patients indicated they either did not have dental insurance, or they were unable to afford the co-pay associated with their plans in order to receive necessary dental care.

In our ongoing efforts to improve the program and to take CTMOM to the next level, we saw that we could meet a tremendous need by assisting our patients in finding a dental home. This year, CTMOM reached out to the Community Health Centers (CHC) throughout the state for assistance with this initiative. Informational tables were set-up throughout the clinic for CHC staff to assist patients in finding a dental and in many cases, a medical home. In addition, a post-clinic follow- up letter was mailed to all patients who did not have insurance or a dental home, recommending they contact their local CHC to continue their commitment to their oral and overall health.

All patients received basic oral health instructions, oral health education literature, toothbrushes and toothpaste in order to maintain their long term oral health. In addition to basic instructions, 1,160 patients received comprehensive oral healthcare instructions. Particular attention was paid to the strong parallel between good nutrition and good oral health.

These patients made up 14.42% of the clinic this year. It is possible these patients have made CTMOM clinics their dental home.

Patients were extremely grateful for all the services that were provided to them. “Thank you,” “God Bless you” and “Muchas gracias” were spoken again and again throughout the day and grateful tears were shed by many.

CTMOM 2011 could not have been a success without the guidance of our dedicated CTMOM Steering Committee and hundreds of volunteers who donated their time and expertise to the project, some of whom volunteered for the entire event including setup and breakdown. Dental, Medical, Professional and Community Volunteers all came together to ensure that patients received an efficient and caring experience. We welcomed the America’s Mission of Mercy Team from Kansas, the Moose 6 AmeriCorps Team, Judicial Branch Community Service Program Work Crews and high school students to assist in the set-up, breakdown and actual clinic days. We also welcomed the assistance of the members of Georgia, Wisconsin, Florida, Rhode Island and New York’s teams. For the fourth year, the staff of Integrity Sales and Solutions, LLC and Jordan Byron generously donated their time before, during and after the clinic and provided all the computer hardware and software needed for registration, radiology and data collection for the event. Licensed Massage Therapists from the Connecticut Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association provided massages to extremely appreciative volunteers throughout the clinic days. A team of dentists provided emergency care to any patient who needed follow up treatment from a procedure received at the clinic. This care is provided for 30 days immediately following the mission at no cost to the patient.

Fortress & CTMOM

Webster Bank

look Who’s Talking

The Connecticut State Dental Association (CSDA) has endorsed Fortress’ professional liability insurance for its members since 2003. As a dentist-owned and operated insurance company, we feel a special bond to the dental community and take pride in the high level of service we provide dentists.

Fortress has been a corporate sponsor of the Connecticut Mission of Mercy since its inception in 2008. Our sponsorship is one way we demonstrate our commitment to the CSDA and its members. CTMOM offers Fortress a unique way to give back to the dental community. The sponsorship has the added benefit of supporting the CSDA’s members’ goal of providing dental care to individuals lacking access to regular dental care.

Fortress has also sent employees from its Illinois headquarters to volunteer at CTMOM. I have personally volunteered at two CTMOM events. I know I speak for

all Fortress employees who have volunteered when I say how my experience at CTMOM has touched me in an extraordinary way. Volunteering has given me the chance to work side-by-side with CSDA members and staff and witness the professionalism they bring to their work. It has also been personally rewarding to see and hear the gratitude of the individuals receiving dental services at CTMOM. I always felt my time at CTMOM has contributed to making the community a better place for at least for one day.

CTMOM is a wonderful event that helps people and changes lives. Fortress is proud to be a sponsor and I am proud of all the Fortress employees who have volunteered for CTMOM over the years.

Bill PassoltPresident and CEOFortress Insurance Company

With a vested interest in helping our communities thrive, Webster partners with programs like the CT Mission of Mercy, a terrific program and one that we have supported since its inception in 2008. Since then MOM has grown to serve thousands across Connecticut and we are pleased to be a part of this success helping individuals and families secure dental services that are so essential to living a healthy life.

At Webster Bank, we give of ourselves in the communities we serve. This commitment is both a core value that helps define who we are and a tradition since we were

founded in 1935. Webster supports hundreds of not-for-profit organizations throughout our four state footprint that serve those who need a helping hand with securing food and shelter, building economic self-reliance through education and financial literacy, and securing essential health and human services. Helping a broad set of organizations build a strong and self-reliant community is at the heart of Webster’s corporate giving program.

Everyone, from the parking attendants to the people at the exit when I left, was so friendly. Each station I went through was the same. Always saw a smiling face, a face who was willing to help out. The fact that so many people donated their time to this event is amazing. Everyone made you feel special.

So from the bottom of my heart, Thank you again!Ian BethuneNewington, CT

Dear CTMOM,

Thank you for your kindness and expertise today

at your dental clinic. I unexpectedly am without

insurance and I truly appreciate your kindness.

Sincerely, Mary A.

I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you

for what you guys did this weekend. As someone

who has been unemployed without dental

insurance (and health insurance to boot), I hadn’t

been able to get the proper care for my teeth as I’d

like or was used to. Unfortunately, I missed out on

last year’s because honestly I didn’t know about it

until after the fact. But this year, I made sure I was

able to attend. Thank you from the bottom of my

heart!

Very organized, greatest doctors and staff,

everyone was very nice and professional. JeromeI was very impressed with the efficiency in which

everything was done without sacrificing the

quality of work.

Bill R.

My boyfriend brought me here at 2:30 a.m. I am

so happy to be out of pain. Thank you so much.

God bless all of you! Donna

Good Morning ---

I just wanted to let you know that yesterday was my

first time volunteering for the CT MOM event and

I had a wonderful time. Everyone that I met, from

patient to volunteer to area leader to dentists was

so friendly and helpful. The procedure seemed to

flow so smoothly. It was a great experience and I

am looking forward to doing it again next year.

Thank you and thank you to all of the dentists &

hygienists that offered their time - what a fantastic

program.

Sue LaCombe

I just wanted to take this opportunity to

congratulate and thank each of you for your

tremendous work on the Waterbury Mission of

Mercy event. It was a pleasure to work with each of

you and the entire MOM group that you assembled.

I can tell you that the overwhelming opinion from

everyone on the City of Waterbury team has been

nothing short of amazement as to the success of

the clinic. On behalf of Mayor Michael Jarjura and

the entire City of Waterbury a sincere thanks to all.

Please let me know if we can be of any assistance in

the future.

Be well,

Joe Geary

Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the CTMOM 2011 dental clinic in Waterbury. I know that we made a difference in almost 2000 people’s lives but they also made a difference in my life. As I sat there with my patients and heard their stories I was both humbled and full of gratitude. They sat there next to me, sharing their stories with honesty and I did my best in that 5 minute interaction to help them feel safe, important and cared for.

As I sat there gazing into the crowd of hundreds in the theatre seats I thought about the last time I was in a dimly lit theatre. Was I seeing a play at Long Wharf, seeing a show at the Shubert, at a James Taylor concert?? I couldn’t recall, but I was sure I didn’t have a sleeping bag and pillow with me, and I’m sure I wasn’t cold, tired and scared or in pain. I was thinking if I had made 3 bad decisions in a row or hadn’t had the unconditional support of my family would I be sitting there with my 3 year old by my side, cold, tired and in pain.

For me, the most astonishing trait I saw in these people was their sheer patience. Some slept out in the cold all night and didn’t complain, but I complained about the cold on the short walk from the car. Some of them waited hours and hours to see the medical personnel, sitting in the hard wooden bleachers and not one person complained. Every day at work some patient is complaining about the wait to be seen, the wait for the doctor, the wait for their ride. I wonder why their time is so important. Was the time of those hundreds of patients not as important??? Yet not one complained about the 12, 14, 16 hour wait to see the dentist. Again I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity and experience. I learned a lot that day. I look forward to next year.

Thank you again.Liz Melvin

Thank you for affording me the opportunity

to volunteer at the MOM. I received so much

more then what I offered in volunteering. My

experience with the patients, the dentists and

fellow volunteers was something that I will never

forget. Everyone who I met throughout the

entire day was so appreciative for the services

they received. It truly was a wonderful experience

and a day I will never forget. An exhausting day,

but what I received was worth every sore muscle

I felt at the end of the day. I thank you for this

opportunity and was so impressed with the

organization of the entire clinic.

Kudos to you and your team for all your efforts

and commitment.

Luci
