So... What IS a First Friday Gallery Walk? We talk a lot in the newsletter, emails, and social media about First Friday Gallery Walks happening each month. If youdon’thavetheopportunitytoattend, youmaywonderexactly what a First Friday Gallery Walk is.

In a nutshell, a gallery walk is a free evening of art, music, friends, horsd’oeuvresandbeverageshostedmonthlybythe downtown art galleries! Each gallery - Anne Lloyd Gal-lery (and sometimes the 3rd Floor Gallery) in the Madden Arts Center, Blue Connection and Gallery 510 - features their

artist of the month. Some-times DAAC even offers hands-on art experiences or demonstrations. You can meet the artists and listen to them share a few words about their inspirations and techniques. It’sasocialgathering and a great way to get your art fix!

P.S. Usually the gallery walks land on the first Friday of the month, but occasionally the calendar pushes the event to the second Friday.

February 2-26Metamorphosis:transformation;achange in appearance, character, cir-cumstances.

What better describes the growth of DAAC over the past 50 years? And, what better way to launch our 50th than an exhibit that speaks to such a journey and evolution?

Each of the featured artists repurposes images and materials to create vibrant contemporary works of art. Chi-cago artist, Carol Brookes, consid-ers the world her art supply store. Nails, bolts, tubing, rope and other hardware become mixed media sculptures with bold structure and rich texture. For Kass Copeland, freelanceChicagoartist,“puz-zling together previously unrelated images”withavintagefeelprovidesthe vehicle to build modern narratives, incorporating humor as the universal language. And, Michael Waraksa, from Milwaukee, gives collage a modern twist, electronically piecing vintage im-ages into quirky art.

ICONS & IllUSIONS By CynthiA hAyESMarch 2-28Using a Renaissance tech-nique called grisaille, Cynthia Hayes paints thin or transpar-ent veils of color in a limited neutral palette to create an illusion of a three-dimen-sional sculptured relief.
