STUDENT COMPANY OF THE YEAR AWARD
ApiaryGlobally, plastic pollution continues to grow, and plastic food storage is one of the largest contributors to this epidemic. Is there an existing solution that could decrease our reliance on this environmentally harmful material? The executive and team members of a young Burnaby start-up think so.
An enterprising JA student company at Burnaby South Secondary, called Apiary, is making a name for itself in the food storage space. The innovative food wrap design is an eco-friendly alternative to plastic wrap and Ziploc bags. Apiary’s reusable and bio-degradable product line is made of 100% recycled cotton fabric, beeswax, pine resin, and jojoba oil, which keeps produce fresher than the conventional plastic wrap due to the natural antibacterial properties in the ingredients and the breathability of the fabric.
Immediately upon launch, Apiary’s marketing strategy focused on building awareness of environmentally friendly products. Their food wraps are produced and sourced from several local social enterprises, including Our Social Fabric, which provided the cotton fabric, and Hives for Humanity, which was the source of the beeswax; the latter being a not-for-profit that encourages community connections through apiculture.
Apiary harnessed the diverse skill sets of their team members, and the lessons learned from JA’s Company Program, to develop their product. The team initially deployed resources on research & development and marketing, which allowed them to gain an edge over their competitors. Additionally, the Apiary team leveraged social media to validate their early concepts and to poll for consumer insights to improve their product.
Teamwork and a solid grasp of business concepts are gains this team can use as they embark on their career paths. But that is not all. After achieving a phenomenal 158% return on their investment, Apiary decided to give back to the community that helped them achieve their success by donating 10% of their profits to Hives for Humanity.
