Celebrate Freedom Founda-

tion is highlighting a very

special sponsor that has con-

tributed greatly to the fur-

thering of the non-profit,

PPG Aerospace. Founded in

1883, PPG Industries is a

supplier of paints, special

materials, fiberglass and

coatings. Celebrate Freedom

is proud to be sponsored by

PPG and appreciate their do-

nation of the paint coating

for the floor of hangar for the

National Headquarters. The

paint was applied by Mid-

lands Technical College stu-

dents after an instructional

briefing by a representative from PPG.

CFF would like to thank PPG Aerospace

for their continued sponsorship and

the donation of the hangar floor paint

coating.

History Highlight “Charlie Horse” was retired from active Army service in

1974, and after many years of work by Mr. Lovelady it

has been restored to enter a new phase of service to

honor the military veterans in parades and public

events. It is on display at the Foundation’s National

Headquarters and S.T.E.M. Education Center.

“Charlie Horse” is the name of the

Foundation’s full restored M-38A1

Army Jeep owned by Jack Lovelady.

It was manufactured by Willys in

1953 and delivered to the U.S. Ar-

my where it served in Korea and

later Vietnam with Charlie Troop,

1st Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division

Airmobile.

The M-38A1 Jeep had many im-

provements over the WWII Jeeps

(Peeps) which it replaced such as a

more powerful engine, a synchro-

nized transmission, 24 volt electri-

cal system, greater ground clear-

ance and larger cargo capacity. This

Jeep also has the underwater ford-

ing system.

One of our Newest AH-1F Attack Cobra Helicopters has been named

"Kimberly" honoring U.S. Army Captain Kimberly Hampton. Captain

Hampton was flying an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter above the

outskirts of Fallujah, Iraq in a raid on an illicit weapons marketplace

when she was shot down on January 2, 2004. She lived her dream of

commanding a U.S. Army Air Cavalry troop and died as a footnote in

history: America's first female military pilot killed in

combat by the enemy. An All-American girl from Easley,

South Carolina in the U.S. Army's All-American Division,

Kimberly was assigned as Commander of Delta Troop,

1st Squadron, 17th Air Cavalry Regiment, 82nd Airborne

Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. On August 31, 2003

she deployed her troop to Iraq attached to Taskforce

Wolfpack. Prior to that assignment, Kimberly served in

the 4th Squadron, 7th Air Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infan-

try Division in Korea.
