NAIDOC week activitiesOn Tuesday 2 July we will be starting our NAIDOC activities NAIDOC week celebrates the history culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples NAIDOC week is celebrated by all Australians and is a great opportunity to learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities

The theme for 2019 is lsquoVoice Treaty Truthrsquo

A special assembly will begin at 845am and will be followed by a rotation of activities Families are certainly welcome to join us

Please also see the information in this newsletter regarding NAIDOC Week activities in the Hastings Region

North Coast Cross CountryCongratulations to Locke Williamson Brenton Mance and Ben Spencer for their outstanding efforts making it to the North Coast carnival last week in Nana Glen west of Coffs Harbour Reports back state how well the boys performed even after the Dance Festival late the night before

Attendance at school reminderAfter analysing our attendance records for 2019 I would like to highlight that students with 15 full or partial days absence in a semester if repeated for each semester means a whole year absent from school between Kindergarten and Yr 6 The law states that attendance at school is compulsory for academic socialemotional cultural and physical wellbeing and development As listed on student reports an increasing number of students are showing large numbers of days absent from school This is not related to sickness or approved leave for family travel it is relating to the large number of unjustified absences from school The Department of Educationrsquos Home School Liaison Officer in our area has been informed of students at risk Please also remember that all absences are marked justified or unjustified on our official attendance rolls

Hastings Valley Community of Schools Ceremony of Excellence 2019The Hastings Valley Community of Schools (HVCS) will host the annual Ceremony of Excellence during Education Week ndash 2019 on the evening of Tuesday 6th August The focus of this yearrsquos ceremony is to recognise significant academic cultural or sporting performance of nominated students from Year 3 to Year 12 Each school will nominate students to receive an Award of Excellence for a specific focus area Each school already excels in recognising students for their performance participation spirit and citizenship throughout the year with countless ribbons certificates awards trophies and rewards systems

The HVCS Ceremony of Excellence hosted at the Glasshouse will recognise those students from each school for their outstanding academic cultural or sporting performance The evening will also showcase a small but select number of performances including quality solo or ensemble items to complement the presentation of awards

Invitations to parents of students nominated to receive awards have been sent home to recipients Invitations will contain details of the awards night as well as ticketing information Tickets will be complimentary for all parents of students receiving awards andor performing on the night

The HVCS looks forward to celebrating the achievements of this group of students who are representative of our very successful Public Schools in the Hastings Valley Community of Schools

Nationally consistent collection of dataAs mentioned in previous years students with a confirmed disability physically or mentally are required to be identified on a National data collection register called the NCCD Details of personal information are held confidentially in line with national privacy regulations and are used to assist Government initiatives and support mechanisms for students with a disability Collection of this data is finalised early next term This process is conducted by the Principal counsellor class teachers and the Learning and Support teacher No action is required by parents If you have any questions about this process please call me at school

Student ReportsNext week all students will take home their Semester One reports Teachers have been working very hard to ensure the information presented in the reports is a quality reflection of your childrsquos academic ability social competencies and overall commitment to school life Teachers make professional judgements based on assessment data and daily observations as well as through collaborative meetings with grade partners about the grades students will achieve in each Key Learning Area

The reports will explain what the students have been expected to learn and how well they have achieved this The NSW syllabuses state what students at each stage are expected to learn The overall achievement grading scale describes how well students have achieved these expectations at this point in time

Achievement grades are only one aspect of school reporting to parents Other important aspects include the studentrsquos effort and application Be sure to read carefully the teacherrsquos general comment as this will provide an insight into the studentrsquos overall commitment to learning

If you have any questions about your childrsquos report please donrsquot hesitate to make contact with the classroom teacher by arranging an appointment through the front office

Dance Festival 2019What an amazing week at the Dance Festival last week Our students were sensational with huge thanks to the staff involved in their preparation Mr Pringle once again created energetic powerful professional routines for our dance groups and we have received an enormous amount of congratulations for the performances of our students A big thank you goes out to the many staff behind the scenes for their spirit and support Videos will be sent to the school and we will send out information about how to order A reminder that official photography of individuals and groups from LCPS can be found on the NashysPix website for purchase httpsnashyspixcomcategoriesschools
