November 7, 2021
Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church
All Saints Day Of all three years of the lectionary cycle, this year’s All Saints readings have the most tears. Isaiah and
Revelation look forward to the day when God will wipe away all tears; in John’s gospel, Jesus weeps
along with Mary and all the gathered mourners before he demonstrates his power over death. On All
Saints Day we celebrate the victory won for all the faithful dead, but we grieve for our beloved dead as
well, knowing that God honors our tears. We bring our grief to the table and find there a foretaste of
Isaiah’s feast to come.
Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

For those at home, please find some local water and freely splash yourself and those around you
in remembrance of baptism and thanksgiving for the gift of water.
Blessed be the holy Trinity + one God,
the fountain of living water,
the rock who gave us birth,
our light and our salvation.
Amen.
Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God’s mercy and forgiveness.
Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism.
We give you thanks, Living God,
for you have created the cosmos, and you water the earth abundantly.
We praise you for oceans, rivers, and streams,
and for the Mississippi river watershed where we make our home.
We praise you for Christ, the firstborn from the dead,
who frees us from sin and raises us up to new life.
Here at this font we touch the river of the water of life.
Here, death is washed away forever.
Here, we join God’s movement of healing for the whole world.

Pour out your Holy Spirit into this community
and throughout all creation.
Cleanse us from our fears and drown our divisions.
Grant that all may drink of your mercy and peace,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Sovereign,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.

Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.
Scripture readings come from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible study edition edited by Gordon W.
Lathrop and Gail Ramshaw and from The Inclusive Bible, edited by Priests for Equality.
We use the ancient name, YAHWEH (YHWH which simply sounds like breath – the Breath of Life) for God when
reading from Hebrew Scripture (Old Testament). In reading the gospels and other newer testament readings, we use
the word Abba or Abba God. Abba means ‘Papa’ in Aramaic, the language used in Jesus’ time and place.

First Reading Isaiah 25:6-9
A reading from Isaiah.
6On this mountain YAHWEH Omnipotent will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,
of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.
7And YAHWEH will destroy on this mountain
the shroud that is cast over all peoples,
the sheet that is spread over all nations;
8 YAHWEH will swallow up death forever.
Then YAHWEH Omnipotent will wipe away the tears from all faces,
and the disgrace of the chosen people God will take away from all the earth,
for YAHWEH has spoken.
9It will be said on that day,
Lo, this is our God, for whom we have waited, so that God might save us.
This is YAHWEH for whom we have waited;
let us be glad and rejoice in God’s salvation.
This is the word of life.

Second Reading Revelation 21:1-6a
A reading from Revelation.
1I saw a new heaven and a new earth;
for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,
prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
“See, the home of God is among mortals.
God will dwell with them as their God;
they will be God’s people,
and that very God will be with them,
4God will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Death will be no more;
mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
for the first things have passed away.” 5And the one who was seated on the throne said,
“See, I am making all things new.”
And also, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6aThen the one seated on the throne said to me,
“It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”
This is the word of life.

“Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” 38Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb.
It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39Jesus said, “Take away the stone.”
Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him,
“Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” 40Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone.
And Jesus looked upward and said, “Abba, I thank you for having heard me. 42I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here,
so that they may believe that you sent me.” 43When Jesus had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth,
and his face wrapped in a cloth.
Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Sermon
Litany of the Saints
On All Saints Sunday we remember those who have gone before us into their eternal home by naming
them in the Litany of the Saints. Today we name biblical ancestors, ancestors in the faith, and those
dearly departed who have shown us the Way. We also name those people whose funerals and baptisms
have been associated with this congregation in the past year and hear names of those friends, relatives
and loved ones who were submitted by Our Saviour’s folks.
All respond after the cantor:
“… stay with us.”
“All you holy blessed beloved, stay with us.”
*Prayers of the People (Each petition will conclude with, “Hear us, O God.” and the congregation
responds, “Your mercy is great.”)
Meal
God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

Joining with the people of God throughout the ages, let us pray with confidence.
Our Mother, our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen.

Distribution

whatever you have collected for a common meal. As you share and eat, please use these or similar
words, “The body of Christ given for you,” and “The blood of Christ shed for you,” until we feast
together as the entire body of Christ. Those meeting in person may follow the directions of the ushers.
Please sanitize your hands before you take bread or wafer and then return to your seat before you eat.
