CCOP METADATA EXPERIENCE
Knowledge captured/lessons learnt and application Learnt what Metadata is,
o how it is being applied : Geospatial & Geo Information applicationo the components of metadata elements, sub-elements o the international standards pertaining to the information kept in Metadata system.
How China Geological Survey (CGS) and other member countries developed their Metadata system and how it has been used for information sharing.
Shared the information learnt about metadata and the system developed by CCOP to the other community especially in Data Management fraternity.
Review the existing Exploration Technical data which are kept in individual systems which covers :o Geospatial /Geographic Information System on GIS – build on ISO19115/19119
Metadata standardso Technical and business documents o Wells header informationo Seismic informationo Physical data information( tapes, cores and documents)
Current Application : Metadata Publication for Mapping & Cartographic and web-based GIS system
Current Application : Metadata Publication for Mapping & Cartographic and web-based GIS system
Metadata for Maps
Current Application : Metadata Publication for Mapping & Cartographic and web-based GIS system
Current Application : e-Search system to store metadata for Technical reports & Well logs
Current Application : e-Search system to store metadata for maps and seismic data
FINDINGS
Reviewed and tested the current system developed by CGS on its functionality, accessibility and security aspects. The findings are as below:o Functionality :
o Meet basic requirement. How it can be used for other Oil & Gas especially for Exploration information.
o Need to include new elements & sub-element for other data types’ usage e.g. seismic, well & physical reports.
o Accessibility : o Slow access / not able to access at all. o To explore the limitations or security measures set locally & how to enable
access from office.o Information Security & Release:
o To follow current data release procedure and guideline before publishing the information to public .
APPLICATIONS
As the main reference in coming up with PETRONAS Metadata system for Petro-Technical data and reports. Current metadata is stored in individual system/databases: EDMS system for Technical reports GIS system for Geospatial and map information FINDER system for Wells header information, SEISDB and PROSOURCE systems for Seismic raw and interpreted data E-SEARCH for physical data information such as tapes, conventional cores and
hardcopy documents.
The inputs from CCOP Metadata system (i.e. Elements & Sub-elements) is applied or referred to in coming up with the PETRONAS Technical Metadata Information system and PETRONAS Metadata project framework. The project is in progress.
WAY FORWARD
Functionalityo To enhance the system/standards to cater for other oil and gas related data types
such as seismic, well, etc.o To finalize what information with regards to Oil & Gas to be shared amongst
country members.
Extensibilityo Member countries may add new properties and/or sub-properties to the basic
metadata set to suit their particular business and recordkeeping requirements. o When implementing the standard, each country to make their own assessments
about any special requirements they have for capturing additional metadata about their records
Flexibilityo This standards should be flexible to be applied in a wide variety of systems
Accessibility o Suggestion is to install the application locally for better access and speedo Metadata system to be installed locally but once published, it becomes public for
sharing
WAY FORWARD
Data Confidentiality and Security o Only approved data/information can be published for public sharingo Use the system for internal use for exploration
Communication Continuous collaboration and communication with the CCOP Member
countries to share on new development after the Metadata Project ends through online updates e.g. Online communication- emails, blogs, facebook, Linked-In etc Community of Practice (COPs) workgroup forums.
Sharing Site visits to the member countries’ office to share on latest development by
each member countries Training Needs To train people how to key-in new data into the common metadata system Publishing the information for public viewing
TERIMA KASIH
Discussions
Roundtable discussion ‐‐ Challenges related to metadata system –
i. Security of the information inside the system – server, accessibility
ii. Should all information be shared?iii. What areas of information to be shared?
implementation & use – how to promote the system?‐ Contents of the guidelines for the effective use and promotion of the
system‐ Areas of expertise required‐ Others matters related to the EPPM P3 that needs to be addressed &
included in the future activities (other tasks) Bringing together the challenges & solutions
Discussions
Roles and responsibilities Discussion of who‐does‐what in the P3 metadata guidelines Drafting the P3 metadata guideline & ways
forward Writing down the headings that will later be
expanded into fuller text development & other tasks Finalizing the drafts and ways forward How will the guidelines & other tasks promoted and objectives delivered?
