Thoughts from ... our SBN chair Debbie Bird:

Well it might have been foggy and gloomy driving up to the Old Lodge for October’s meeting but it

certainly wasn’t foggy or gloomy inside. (Did you check your fog lights?). The meeting had a great

atmosphere and it was lovely to hear from Helen, Tanya and Wendy demonstrating the diversity

of our businesswomen.

First Helen from Belford House HR Ltd took us through her 2 and a half year journey to finding

her niche market. She demonstrated the powerful lesson that specialising might reduce the

market but it makes messaging much easier to recognise and sell to the right clients.

Next we had Tanya and her business Kalya which stands out for me as she was one of the first

people that I talked to when I first joined SBN 5 years ago. Her business is well developed, and

over time she has added layers – from massage to products to yoga classes, she has a diverse and

loyal customer base built up over many years.

And finally we know Wendy as Wendygoesgreen but for her it’s all change, getting ready to

launch her new brand of straight forward cleaning products ‘Just Primal’ that she has developed

over 4 years. It was exciting to hear about product development, branding, packaging and

expectations. We look forward to hearing how business develops.

One of the many pleasures of SBN for me is working with the Committee and Diane our

Administrator to make sure that we keep true to the SBN standards that have evolved over time.

The fact that we have great speakers and events already lined up through to March next year is

the result of teamwork, teamwork, teamwork. A big thank you from me for that teamwork and

especially for support during this year.

We are really looking forward to welcoming Stroud District Council CEO Kathy O’Leary to our

November meeting. Remember – a good one (as ever) to invite guests to!

Enjoy your November business and see you in a few weeks.

Debbie

We run three different types of main MEETINGS at suit all tastes!

Meeting style 1: Local interest speaker – examples of recent speakers Martin Bundy of John Lewis

Cheltenham, Doina Cornell the Leader of Stroud District Council, and David Drew MP for Stroud.

Meeting style 2: Dedicated to learning new business skills and networking: helping members meet

each other using structured and informal networking techniques, so people get to know each other

better, and gain more confidence in networking generally.

Meeting style 3: Inspirational businesswomen: one keynote business speaker, usually a successful

businesswoman from in and around the Stroud district, sharing ideas and aspirations.

Shout Outs - Within these meetings according to time we offer member 'shout outs' when members

get the chance to tell everyone about their business and, hopefully, share some tips and useful

information.

Housemates Re-invented with Homeshare Gloucestershire – Article Submitted by

Penny Carpenter

Homeshare Gloucestershire is one of the services offered by Age UK Gloucestershire, a local

independent charity with a mission to make our County the best place in which to grow older.

Homeshare brings together older people who have spare rooms, with people who need

affordable accommodation and who are happy to chat and lend a hand. Homeshare can be a

great and safe option for someone who misses having other people in their home.

How it works:

The Householder-

Benefits from some low-level support and company at home.

The Homesharer-

Is offered not just a place to live, but a real home.

Together-

Householders and Homesharers share home life, time, skills and experience.

Homeshare Gloucestershire-

Carefully matches people, oversees the arrangements and provides professional ongoing

support.

We already have a number of successful matches across the County, so if you’d like to know

more, call Ramona Amuza, the Homeshare Manager, on 01452 422660/07760 419260 or visit

Nothing to See, Nothing to Feel. Article Submitted by Sara Phelps This was the case when I was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer in April. Thank goodness for mammograms, as without this screening I may still be unaware that anything was wrong. Even my consultant was unable to feel the tumour, reassuring me that I hadn't missed finding it myself. Having had a successful lumpectomy in May, I was told that the cancer was graded intermediate to high, so had the potential to grow quite quickly and to be invasive. After a course of radiotherapy, thankfully, I was discharged by oncology earlier this month. I am sharing my experience to highlight the importance of attending your mammogram appointments, indeed any of the screening programmes the NHS offers. Whether it's because the appointment offered is inconvenient or you find the procedure uncomfortable or embarrassing, it's so important that you take full advantage of this wonderful, free service. The only way my particular cancer was going to be detected, at that time, was via a mammogram, remember, there was nothing to see or feel. Had I not attended my appointment, the outcome may have been very different. It's important to check yourself regularly too but don't assume that this negates the need to have a mammogram. If you are overdue for any type of health screening, hopefully this story will encourage you to book your appointment.......today!

Tips for Social Media -Marketing your Business Article Submitted by Wendy of WendygoesGreen

Facebook Tips: Newsfeed overhaul - expect this to look different and you may need to adjust settings so the feeds you want come on top. Enter only 3 lines of text on a post before 'click more' – meaning that the first three lines needs to entice reader to click on more to get more information. Use Smaller images Organic reach – FB used to reach more people for you but now the algorithm doesn't factor in 'likes' although will recognise shares and comments and mark post as quality content. Advice on posts: Relevance and quality of posts more important to get organic reach (those who facebook share it with without you paying). Also, you need comments and reactions such as sharing as more important than just 'likes'. Instagram Tips: Removing likes and views so only visible to admin Comments will have more impact Important info: The way we can help each other is to add a comment or share posts. It would be much appreciated if anyone who feels they can to go on my wendygoesgreen facebook page and write a comment about my products or share if possible as I forgot to do

that at end of my shout out on Thursday.
