BOARD MEETING
March 16th 2015
Submitted by Sheryl Cooper
The meeting was called to order at 7:00
pm. In attendance were Bonnie Andrade,
Betty Milam, Cathy Miller, Sheryl
Cooper, Mike McBride, Norm Hodgson,
Mike Cox, Beth Farmer and Jodi
Minshall.
Treasurer: We reviewed the February
treasurer's report presented by Betty
Milam. Mike Cox moved to accept the
report as presented. Cathy Miller seconded
the motion and it carried unanimously.
Federation: Mike McBride has applications
for the CFMS cases and club central is
looking for volunteers to talk about their
clubs.
Shop: We are getting a safety guard made
for the belt on the 12” saw. We got a
Brazilian Agate donation and picked up new
safety gear for the shop. Lockers need to
be paid for or items will be removed from
them.
Show: The show is over. The auction went
extremely well. The opal raffle did very
well also. There were not as many door
prize slips this year. The wrap up meeting
will be April 2nd at the shop at 7:00 pm.
Minutes: Jodi Minshall moved to accept
the February board minutes as printed in
the Petrograph. Beth Farmer seconded the
motion and it carried unanimously.
Membership: There are 112 current
members for 2015. Don’t forget to renew
your membership. We are setting up a
paypal account but need to figure out how
to handle the fees. Jodi Minshall proposed
to accept paypal payments with a processing
fee of $2 per person. Mike Cox moved to
accept the proposal and Norm Hodgson
seconded the motion. It was carried
unanimously.
Field Trips: Peggy Lew is organizing two
trips to the Clear Creek Site. Jon Christian
mentioned a few sites he could help us with.
Such as the pyrite mine in Berkeley, the
Guadalupe mine in San Jose and a cinnabar
mine in New Almaden.
Unfinished Business: The landowner has
approved the repair of the floor in the
men’s bathroom. Betty Milam has the name
of someone willing to do the work.
New Business: We received a donation from
CSUEB for our scholarship fund.
The next board meeting will be April 13,
2015
The meeting adjourned at 8:10 pm.
GENEREAL MEETING
March 17, 2015
Submitted by Sheryl Cooper
Bonnie Andrade called the meeting to
order at 7:35 pm. There are 20 members
and 3 guests present.

Guests: Toni Crotty and LaVerne Livsey
found us online after a friend suggested
they find a local lapidary club to join. Phil
Karls visited us tonight after moving back
into the area.
Minutes: Mark Montgomery moved to
accept the February minutes as printed in
the Petrograph. Jim Ewing seconded the
motion and it carried unanimously.
Program: We discussed what everyone
bought, saw or happened at the show.
Cathy Miller couldn't resist the blue opals
any longer. A couple of dealers were
clearancing out some strands of beads. A
labradorite heart also found a new home.
Jim Ewing found some old stock of deep
blue lapis that just wouldn't let him leave
without getting some.
Beth Farmer had to call 911 for an elderly
lady who was having a diabetic episode. One
of the dealers is a doctor and a nurse was
visiting the show both helped her out while
waiting for the ambulance. She was feeling
better by the time they showed up.
Cathy Miller reported that a dealer ended
up doubled over in pain the first day of the
show. Several members and dealers helped
her out and helped watch her booth while
she recovered. By the late afternoon she
was better.
Bonnie Andrade found several bracelets
and stone beads that she plans on re-
purposing into another wonderful piece of
jewelry.
Cheryl Gullak found many wonderful items
and every time she turned around
something new jumped up and caught her
attention.
Mike McBride had the winning bid for the
turquoise bolo from the live auction. He
proudly strutted around showing his first
ever bolo tie.
Ed Rigor bought some wonderful opal. Are
there more classes on the horizon?
Shirley Buschke noticed the auction case at
the shop is void of items. It must be time
to start working on next year’s items.
Oscar Langdon-Streeter showed us his
birthday gift. He beamed while describing
his large amethyst crystal structure.
Lillian Pate enjoyed working the spinning
wheel, but definitely enjoys spinning the
wheel more.
Stephen Caudill-Merida was excited about
getting a geode cracked, but the
fluorescent room really made the crystals
pop.
Someone mentioned how well the live
auction did this year bringing in $3700.
Thank you, Rita Frazier for coming and
doing a fantastic job.
Norm Hodgson says the exhibits looked
good. Other clubs put in cases this year
also. The GIA and GMD did a great job and
settled some disputes. One thing to note is
that we need more people to help pack up
late on Sunday.

Federation: The CFMS is at the Lodi
Fairgrounds from June 12 – 14, 2015. Mike
McBride has $1 off cards available along
with applications for competition and
exhibit cases. Rules are on the CFMS
website and Norm Hodgson said he would
help people with the rules if you have any
questions. At the show is a club central
section that needs representatives from
clubs to talk about our club. Anyone want to
be in the demo room for a 4 hour slot? Let
Mike know if you are interested. Sunday
morning is the editor and webmaster
breakfast. We discussed putting in a club
exhibit case. The “Golden Bear” will be at
the CFMS show. It is a 4 oz piece of gold in
the shape of a bear. If you have never seen
it in person you are missing out.
Shop: April 11th is shop cleanup day
starting at 9:00 am. If you use the shop
come help clean it up. April 12th is our Open
House starting at 10:00 am. It will be a
potluck with a swap meet and donations
sale. Didn't help during the show, come help
clean up to get shop privileges back. Beth
Farmer reports the two 12” saws need some
work. She just found a new source of oil for
about half the price. She is hopeful that it
will work in our saws. If you have any
questions put them in the box near the grit
sink.
Show: The show is over. Thank you to the
following for traveling the distant to help -
Cheryl Gullak from Canada, Chrissy Cody
from Santa Cruz and Rita Frazier from
Colorado. Cathy Miller says the auction and
the raffle went well. We sold all 300 lbs of
geodes and gave away all 150 lbs of tumbled
rock. The wrap up meeting is April 2nd at
the shop at 7:00 pm. We are looking for
ideas and to hear what worked and what
needs changing. It was suggested we set up
a website to advertise better and to
promote all shows. We have bought the
domain BayAreaGemShows for this purpose.
Membership: There are 112 current
members. Only paid members are covered
by the insurance. Don’t forget if you do not
pay your membership then your name is not
in the money drawing at the general
meeting. Be prepared to start bringing your
membership card with you to the shop.
Juniors: Nothing to report.
Education: Shirley Buschke says classes
will resume soon. Lee Daguman will be
holding a class on how to knot your bead
work.
Library: A few books that were donated
are being added to the library.
Field Trips: Peggy Lew is planning two trips
to the Clear Creek site. One will be a guided
tour from a geologist and the other one will
be a self-guided walk around the area. Jon
Christian is talking about a Point Reyes
tour.
Money Drawing: The name drawn tonight
for $105 is Isabella Bennette, but she was
not here. In April the amount goes to $110.
Guest drawing: Toni Crotty and LaVerne
Livsey.

ROCK RUMBLES
By Shirley Buschke
Wonderful show!! Thank you to all who
helped. The group worked extra hard
because we really needed more manpower in
the time of setting up and tearing down.
Those who only come to help during the
show have no idea how much work is
involved. We need physical help. Leave the
wearing of security coats to the senior
citizens who can’t work like they used to.
Few of you work on Saturday for delivery
to the Pavilion or Sunday for take down.
Help then! As I was leaving one of the
dealers said he loves the friendliness of our
members.
The winner of the raffle Jan Jones,
was thrilled with her prize. She has bought
lots of tickets in the past, too. She is the
wife of one of our dealers, Del’s Opals ,and
they are also members and two Cal State
students are glad she and many others
bought tickets. Money goes for
scholarships.
Nice to see old friends, Snooky Flowers
was here with a walker. Seems he had back
surgery recently. Also Bill Jeans and his
wife Jessie who have moved to the
Vacaville area were here. I also saw the
Churchills from Patterson. She brought a
contribution of supplies for our beaders and
I just found out they were the secret
donor of the $1000 to our club. Thank you
Nicki and Carl. Chris Cody came from
Felton and worked and worked and worked.
She helped set up, hung those banners,
skirted and then sold tickets for the raffle
with Doc and Diana . Rachel Rey saved
the day when they were having trouble
putting up the tents on Thursday. She used
her trusty I phone, and got the directions.
Our Pittsburg member, Chris PaVel-Liagon
demonstrated wire wrap for two days. She
comes by way of BART. That makes a
LONG day for her. Another member that
we haven’t seen for ages is Eloise Murata-
Rudiger. Missed Carlos Castillo at the cab
machine. He was ill.
I Loved the enthusiastic kids. On Friday.
Mike Mac McBride said while in the men’s
room one of the eleven year olds said “Gee,
I thought this was going to be boring. This
is cool.”

And another correspondent in the
Bennette family. Can you believe the
author, Isabelle, is ten years old? That
article she wrote for our Petrograph reads
like a professional author wrote it.
Finally the auction seemed to draw more
interest and bidding was up, more like it
used to be. Maybe it was the time change
to Saturday, Maybe the country has more
money to spend. Thanks to all who
participated by buying ordonating your
“rock” items. Don’t see anything in the case
yet. It always was a race between John
Gullak and Doc to get the first piece in.
Cheryl Gullak made her annual trip from
Canada, worked the show ( lots more than 4
hours) and is sticking around for a few more
days. And Rita Frazier, our auctioneer,
came from Colorado. Now those two are
truly devotees.
Saturday March 14 was pi day . (No
symbol on the computer). Roland Araya
took it literally and brought in a delicious
chocolate and whipped cream pie for us to
share. Won’t happen again for a zillion
years.
Val and Austin McThorn are planning on a
trip to see us in May, they are sorry they
missed our show. Hope they bring some
rain from Hawaii. She said it just keeps
raining.
Good visit with Phil Karl at our meeting.
He moved to the Brentwood area and
doesn’t get down here very often.
Don’t forget the clean up April 11. And
open house the next day Bring food for the
pot luck.
I was surprised to see Lyle Schoeff at
the shop Saturday, he bused, Barted and
bused to get to the shop. Seems he has put
his cycle in storage for the winter.
Vandalism was taking its toll.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Castro Valley Science Festival
Demonstrators
Once again the Mineral and Gem Society
is being invited to participate in the Castro
Valley Science Festival to be held Saturday,
May 2, 2015 at the Castro Valley High
School, location 19400 Santa Maria Avenue,
Castro Valley. All the area school children
and their parents are invited. Parking is in
the school parking lot off Redwood Road.
For the past 3 years a few of our
members have participated in this Science
Festival, displaying their own rock
collections. A lot of interest was shown in
the items we brought. It is an enjoyable 4
hours. There is much interest shown in the
display set up by the members of the
Mineral and Gem Society of Castro Valley.
The Castro Valley Science Festival runs
from 10 am to 2 pm (set-up up time starts
at 8:30 a.m.). The Festival has exhibits,
presentations, and activities for students al
all levels (elementary, middle, and high
school). It is a completely free event.
Our display tables are located inside the
basketball gym. It's rather a long walk to
carry rocks, so hopefully you'll have a cart
to pull. Label the rocks you bring, whether

it be rough rock, or finished cabochons.
Lables are helpful. Would you be able to
join us this year ?? Please contact Betty

GEM OF THE MONTH
By Diana Cohoon
Our gem is a fairly new member, and she
is originally from Santa Cruz, Ca. She
attended Grammar School and High School
in Santa Cruz. Her parents were originally
from Mexico. Her father was a mason and
used to show her rocks of all kinds that
sparked her interest. She attended Cal
State East Bay and her Major was in
Geography. She has been married 16 years.
She first heard about our club at the
Hayward Farmers Market, and decided to
come and check the shop out and go to a
meeting. She has taken several classes at
the shop and does very well. Have you
guessed who our gem is ? Her name is
Endeliza Hampton.
BRAD SMITH BENCH TIPS
DIVIDERS
A set of dividers is a tool I find very
useful in laying out the geometry of a piece
I'm making. It has two needle-like tips with
an adjustment to set the spacing between
them.
They can be used to transfer a
measurement. Let's say you need a 7mm
Wide strip of sheet metal. Set the spacing
between the divider tips to 7 mm on the
ruler. Then lay the sheet on the bench, put
one tip against the edge, and run the
dividers down the edge scribing a line
parallel to the edge.
Dividers can be used to mark equal
segments of a line or arc. For instance
assume a line between A and B that might
be straight or curved, and you want to
divide it into 5 equal lengths. Set the
dividers to an estimate of the distance.
MGSCV Petrograph April 2015 Monthly Bulletin of the Mineral & Gem Society of Castro Valley, inc.
- 11 -
Starting at Point A, use the dividers to
mark off five lengths along the line. If you
end up short of Point B, lengthen the
distance on the dividers. If you end up
overshooting Point B, shorten the length of
your dividers. After a few tries, the length
on the dividers will be the exact distance
you need to mark the 5 segments.
Dividers can let you quickly find the
center of a circular disk. With one tip of
the dividers at the edge of the disk, set
the other tip to an estimate of where the
center might be. Fix one tip of the dividers
at the 3 o'clock position and scribe an arc
with the other tip near the center. Do this
again from the 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock, and 12
o'clock positions. The arcs at the center
will form a small four-sided box. The center
of the box is at the center of the disk.
PIECE OF LEATHER
Leather has a multitude of uses in the
shop. I often use a scrap of it to avoid
scratching the back of a piece of jewelry
while setting stones. It's also great for
times when you need to clamp one of your
tools in a vise, for instance a drawplate.

KIDS KORNER
Kids on the Rocks
By: Elizabeth Bennette, 16 years old
Earlier this month, we had our annual
Mineral and Gem Show, which was, as
always, so much fun. My sister and I had
the opportunity to volunteer at the spinning
wheel, walk around the halls, and purchase
some jewelry. While buying pieces is usually
what we look forward to, we found that one
of the best parts of this year’s show was
talking to some of the visitors about their
experiences with rocks. This year in
particular, I got the chance to visit with
some of the kids who came to the always
popular spinning wheel. For those who aren’t
familiar, the spinning wheel is a kid’s
activity at the show, in which they can spin
a wheel, and win a small collection of
tumbled and polished stones for only 50¢ a
spin. It’s a real bargain (as their parent’s
will happily tell any member), and gets kids
excited about rocks and minerals by
starting them off with their own mini rock
collection. From the last few times I’ve
helped out at the spinning wheel, I have
heard kids gush about how the wheel is
their "favorite part of the whole show" and
how they still have their "pyrite from last
year!" And as a junior member, it's so
encouraging to hear from kids who posses
early interest and appreciation for minerals
and gems. Multiple times throughout the
weekend, my sister and I suggested that
these kids look into joining our Mineral and
Gem Society, and more often than not, the
kids would excitedly tell us that they would.
Getting the opportunity to talk to these
kids about their interest in minerals and
gems reminded me of why I joined MGSCV
7 years ago. At the shop and at these
shows, I was able develop my appreciation
for minerals and gems, and pick up on new
skills, like cabbing, lost wax, and wire
wrapping. All of these processes require
patience and dedication, qualities that
MGSCV Petrograph April 2015 Monthly Bulletin of the Mineral & Gem Society of Castro Valley, inc.
- 12 -
every young person should learn to posses.
Although many may see the Mineral and
Gem Society shop as a place where they can
refine their skills, which is certainly true,
it's also a community that encourages
anyone of any age to pursue their passion.
There's a place for everyone to grow, which
is why it's so important for us to encourage
kids and teens to become members, and
learn more about their own abilities and the
world of rocks and minerals. In order to
promote this participation of young people
in our club, I’ve compiled a list of ways in
which any member could increase a kid’s
interest in minerals, gems, or geology in
general. If any members have children,
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or cousins
who show interest in minerals and gems,
don’t hesitate to encourage them to join!
1. Talk to them about your favorite gem or
mineral piece or describe your favorite
process that you do in the shop, and
describe why it intrigues you. Maybe show
him or her some of the pieces you’ve made!
Getting a sneak peek into what the club is
really like will make joining seem a bit less
daunting.
2. For younger kids, emphasize the more
basic components of minerals and gems like
colors, shapes, where each rock is found in
nature, so you give them a simple
introduction to the world of geology.
3. Teach kids about rock identifying by
using easy processes like testing the rock’s
hardness, color streak, and opacity.
Performing tests like these will not only
make kids feel like “real scientists,” but will
also make them more confident and
comfortable with rocks.
4. Explain the origins and science behind
rock formation, and describe how each rock
and slab is completely unique. With an
understanding of the history of rocks, kids
will place much more value on each stone,
and appreciate the beauty of nature.
5. Go out and apply some of this newfound
knowledge by going rockhounding, panning
for gold, or even attending a show just like
ours. This day will be a total blast, and you
can put all that you’ve learned to the test!
April’s Birthstone Is Diamond
Of all the rocks on earth, diamonds
are considered to be the best. The name
Diamond” comes for the Greek word
‘adamas’, which means “invincible.”Diamond
is the hardest stone, coming in with a
perfect 10. The base element of diamond is
carbon. The cleavage of diamond is perfect,
in four directions. In its crystal form, they
are isometric, mostly as octahedrons. Most
of us know diamonds as colorless, however
they are found in yellow, red, orange, blue,
green, brown, and black. When found in its
original form, is has a greasy luster.
Although a diamond is extremely hard, it is
brittle. Diamonds are usually mined from
sedimentary placer deposits, but is
originally formed in peridotite of plutonic
rocks. It is usually associated with olivine,
magnetite, and phlogopite.
Diamonds are primarily found in India,
South Africa, Brazil, and Arkansas. They
have been found in placer gravel in several

areas throughout the Motherlode in
California. For jewelry, diamonds are

The article that Elizabeth Bennett wrote
is a very interesting article coming from a
kids mouth. I would encourage parents to
read this article and try and get your
children interested in your hobbies, that
includes children of all ages.
I again encourage parents to ask their
children about what they liked about our
show for instance, and help them write an
article to submit for the Petrograph, or any
other show or exhibit they have visited
with you. It can be grand kids or cousins or
any junior member of your family.
Please consider for example taking the
children to the CFMS show in Lodi
California. There will something for
everyone including kids to see and enjoy and
experience. Lodi is a nice day trip and I am
sure it will be memorable one.
Just some thoughts after I read Elizabeth
Bennette’s article. Write to me with some
thoughts on this…….. Diana Cohoon, Editor

All members should have or be familiar with the MGSCV Handbook. A copy is available for review in the club's lobby or one can be emailed to you by sending a
request to [email protected].
Before any member may operate any equipment or take any class they must have completed an orientation and their
first cabochon. To schedule an orientation send an email to [email protected] with your
name, phone number, and a good time to call you. During the orientation you will learn about the club and get a tour of the workshop. Monday evenings are reserved for beginners only.
Membership dues cover less than 10% of our annual operating costs. It is our annual show that funds the club, workshop and all activities. A requirement of membership is that every member must work at the show for a minimum of 4 hours. The show is always held the first
full weekend of March, so mark your calendars. The show is
fun to work and is the reason we have the best workshop/club in Northern California. Shop services such as rock sawing, casting, special classes (faceting, wire wrap, metal work, etc...) will not be available to members who do not work at the show.
