Local areas preferred -- Castro Valley, Fremont, San Leandro, and H~ard shoul~ be covered.

. FOOD COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN:

March 1st and 2n are the ~ates for or Gem Show this year and 'once agam we have the opportunity to serve' as the '" food chairman. Castro Valley has al ways been known for serving great food at their show and this year we hope ,to I. make it better ~nan ever. One of the 'reasons I think it will be better is ' . . " that we are fortunate enough to be able to use the facilities of the $150,000 kitchen at Centennial Hall. This will give us enough room and equipment to offer ,an almost unlimited menu.

The b~g event for us will be an all you can eat "BUFFET DINNER~' Saturday evening from 5:30 to 8:00. Because , of .the limited dining area we are taking reservations at .$5: 50 per person including dessett ahd coffee. Tickets will be available at the General Meeting for advance reservation.

:To accomplish the above, Neysa and· I will need the help of all of the m embers 'pf the Society. When you receive your post card or see us at the shq;l or General Meeting ., plea'S'e volunteer your help.

*)~)~)*}*);j~)*)*)*)*)*)*)~)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)~)*)*)~)*)*)*)*)*)*)*)*) SHOP l{EWS:

,S,anta Claus came early this year to the lapidary department of our gem: 'shdp'. Guess what he left? None other than six 8" X lilt diamond cutting wheels for our cabbing machines.

On December 17th we installed four 100 grit and two 600 grit wheels. :We left one set of carbite wheels in case someone doesn't care for the Diamond. Rbbin ,knight, a new member was the first member to use them. She was thrilled with the speed in which they cut. The other members who have used them have really enjoyed the.

If you haven't been down to the shop and tried them out yek, you are really missing out on a real treat.

In the past when I asked members why they didn't use the shop more the reasons given were "I don't like one inch wheels" and "The wheels seem to always be dished."o These two problems have been resolved, so come on down. Remember the shop is open every evening to the membership from 7:30 to 10:00 except for Mondays and General Meeting nights. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

The O!llY thing I ask is that if you have not used diamon before, that you take a few minutes and have the instructor on duty give you a few cutting t i ps.

BUILDING NEEDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As of January ' lst our landlord has increased our rent from $360.00 per month to $700.00 per month plus a cost of living increase every six months. Th~ ~embers of the Board feel that it is more than our Society can afford and have notified the landlord that we will,1 be looking £lor a new building.

The shop' Steering Committee has taken on this task. In the past two months we ,have 'looked ,at ,a number of buildings without finding one ' that fits our needs. Now we are appealing to our membership for help.

We need a minimum of 500 ;squ.azefeet for our shop plus storage. Two buildings would serve this purpose. We need parking, ample electricity, water and sewer system. If you have acquaintances who are in the real estate 'business or see an empty building that might fit our needs please call Dora Collins, Arnold Barron or Judge Ewing.

my collection. ,,' I' ,"II , ', •

One is a very exot~c mine~al combination that is very much in demand among collectors. The other is a rather unglamorous mineral but one that has as muoh importance in our society as steel. However when the mineral is well crystallized it is very much in demand among collectors. .

The first is a, Colorado Specimen from Teller County near the Pike and Crystal Pe~E area. If you haven't guessed by now it is an ' amazoniie-smbke 'quartz cluster. This is one of the more exotic of miner,al combinations and the chdcest specimens , come from Colorado and Russia, with the ,U.S. ' Specimens generally more aboundant and of better ,quality than their Russian counterpoints. My Quartz Cluster consist of several deep bluish green amazoni te crystals with two deep' bl~ck ":~moky quartz crystals. The largest sits in the center of the group and is about an inch high and an inch, wide. The whole group is about 3 x 2 which is a hard size- to get. This piece was just collected last July. New pockets are found 'using bulldozers and backhoes but they are becoming harder and harder to find and dig out. The first specimens were found in the 1870's and during this ti~e ' superb crystal groups could be picked up off the surface. Most 'of' the finest specime~s ' ~hat were exhibited at the ' 1876 World Fair by the mineral dealer A. E. Foote. These sp,e'Oimens totally eclipsed the Russian material exYlibited at the fair. ,There-

after, Cc:>l'orado amazonite was recognized as the worlds finest. ' Th~ : second specimen is native copper from Keweenaw Penisula, Michigan. Copper in

its native state is ' ,rather uncommon at · most copper mines. ' But the nines at Michigan were the ,excep'tion t 'o the rules with native ,copper and s'ilver being the, main ores. ' Copper o'ccured in veins and pockets in a ser-ies of ancient lava cong, lometates. Oocasionally ,itb,~re would be pockets where copper could crysta]ize~, The c'opper would crysta]ize in branching groups and masses of sharply formed crystals. My mineral is a group , of intergrown cyrstals most of them very sharp and: large with the largest crystal just' under an inch. The color is 'the typical deep brownish red color of co'pper. The Michigan coppers are ,considered the classics and are unus~~l : , for their purity. In fact, Mi.qhigan copper became a synonym for purity in copper ore., Also found were cop~er cryst~ls that had grwon in calcite and datolite crystals, and masses of native copper whi,ch had native silver mixed in. These masses are known as the familiar "halfbreeds" ." ." 'Datoli te nodules foundthere are colored red by small particles of native copper which impar,t to the 'nodule copper color. , ', '

Well that's it for this month but here's and idea if you are building a collection: , Always collect the best specimens you can for your collections for they will increase your enjoyment of the mineral kingdom.

JADE COVE: ••••••• Sounds like it shbuihd be , loc~~ed ,on "Treasu~e :tsland", doesn't , it? Mysterious enough to stir mental images or lthe oriental sJ:l\'qgSler "s secret landing place. Exotic enought to be emblazoned upon a bottle of expensive perfUme. Reminisce~t of a Bob Hope - Dorothy Lamour movie. Yes, that's it'. "The Road to Jade Cove" and you;' . yes you, can embark upon it Friday, Feb. 15, the beginning of the , Wash:+ngton ':8 Birth-day, holiday weekend. ' ' , ,

Somewhere, out beyond the pollnding::surf, a reef containing nephrite jade carelessly intrudes upon the ocean floor ~nd relentless courrents with their battering debris strive to rip it apart. As the 'softer matrix is worn away large ,chunks of jade are released and dposited among the tide-pool boulders and infinite quanities of small platelets and botryoidal lumps are interspersed with the gravels along the' "beach.: ':,:

A 7 - ton j'ade boulder was raised by scuba-divers about 8 years ago 'arid chunks of '10 to 100 pounds have been found by members of our own society on priortpips," 'however, these prizes are certainly less frequent ••• A fistsize nodule can be consider~d a lucky find, but the abundant smaller pieces can be easily cut, or mounted natu~ally, to make beautiful jewelry. ' " ' \'

The winter storms which we are now enduring can be 'counted upon 'tq ' stir ~hings up and bring new material to the beaches. Also, we shall be blessed with a very good series of late afternoon minus tides that weekend. They will expose a wide expanse of shoreline which is normally inundated. 'Searching begins as the water retreats, seve~al hours before the e~treme low tide.

winter months). Gas and limited motel accomodations ~Lucia, approximately , 8 miles north of Jade Cove. '
