Irish Patchwork Society Newly elected CCol Board Member Vincent Hughes At each AGM the member guilds and associations present reports on their activities.The following are excerpts from the Irish Patchwork Society Report and the Sculptors Society of Ireland Report: Irish Patchwork Society Report Since the last Crafts Council of Ireland A.G.M in October 99 we had a really busy year. Our National Biennial exhibition 'Memories of the Century' travelled to Galway, Ballina, Ballyjanersduff, Dundalk, Cork and Dublin. Some of our members sent quilts for exhibition to England, Europe and the USA and individual branches had their own exhibitions. We invited Vivien Prideau from Cornwall, England and another textile artist to speak to us after our A.G.M. and to give a workshop. We had a stand at the Knitting and Stitching show. A great weekend was had up in An Grianan with eleven workshops to choose from - something worthwhile for every level of ability. About twenty members travelled to Shastours to Expo 5 where the I.P.S. were invited to present a focus lecture.This was presented by our chair, Emer Fahy, and was attended by several thousand quilters from around the world. We have been invited to exhibit quilts in Val'darqeit, Alsace during September next and in the Heysel, Brussels during March 2001. Another exhibition,'Hands across the Border', is being organised with the Northern Irish Patchwork group during October. Ongoing website development-current news, reviews,opportunities, links to key sites andmembers sites. Web based artexhibition to take place as part of'Place in Time' - a major exhibitionin 2001.

We continue to develop andmaintain our slide and CV archiveof members work while developinga CD-ROM for greater ease ofaccess and availability.

We continue to:• manage sculpture commissions

for public art or private purchase• advise on the percent-for-art

scheme• source specific sculptural skills• organise visual arts events

involving local communities /artist groups

We will be running workshops onDocumentation and ProfessionalPractice targeted at final yearstudents, recent graduates andother developing artists.

In light of the outstanding successof last years SSI SchoolsProgramme the Schools Art Project2000 will run in five inner-cityschools during September/October 2000.

The Sculptors Society of Irelandhas hosted two highly successful

multimedia art, performance andsocial events - 'Radar' and 'tonic',held in the Cobalt Cafe, NorthGreat Georges Street on 28 t'1

January 1999 and 10 th March 2000.'tonic' has been made part of theSculptors Society annual plan ofevents and will run quarterly.'tonic2' is scheduled for July I s t in theCity Arts Centre.

Our ongoing programme ofseminars and lectures featuringprofessionals involved in all areas ofart practice is being developed toinclude daytime lectures at 'tonic'events (first such combined eventscheduled for Sept / Oct 2000).

Jewellery Designand ProductionSkills Course -New FundingLeslie Reed (CEO) and Jane Huston(Trainer) would like to thank allwho were kind enough to writeletters of support for the full timeJewellery Skills course.

For a period the Council was veryuncertain where ongoing fundingwould be found for the course butwe are now delighted to announcethat we have received new statefunding via Enterprise Ireland tosupport the training.

Your letters of support wereimportant as a way of showing thatwhat we are doing is appreciatedand valued by the trade. We tryvery hard to make the course aswell matched as possible to theactual needs of the futureemployers of the trainees.

Once again we are delighted thatall the trainees from the last groupof graduates are in full timeemployment in the trade.

CCol SubsidisedPhotographySchemeCCol have introduced thisscheme in order to assistcraftspeople in attainingprofessional photography oftheir work. This is studio typephotography shot against aneutral background suitable forpress, promotion, brochures andarchive use. The scheme isavailable to all CCol registeredmakers.

Showcase NewsGeneral Waiting ListsAs waiting lists for Showcase 2001are now very lengthy we havedecided to close them for themoment.

Anyone who has written toCatherine Jordan with a view toplacing their name on the waitinglists will be contacted if a standbecomes available.

Village Waiting ListsVillage bookings and confirmationsare almost complete so Bernadette

Due to the demand for Villagestands if you are on the Villagewaiting list and are offered astand it is extremelyimportant that you contactBernadette Fagan by return asstands will not be held.

There are currently 26craftspeople on the Village waitinglist, including New Faces 2000, andwe will try to accommodate asmany people as possible.

New Faces

You will probably be awarethat the New Faces area, located inthe Concert Hall, is a group of nine'new to Showcase' exhibitorswho hold the Crafts CouncilQuality Mark.

The assessment for New Facestook place in April of this year andthere were 7 craftspeople whowere awarded the Quality Markand offered a New Faces stand as aresult.This leaves two places stillavailable for Showcase 2001.

If you wish to have your workassessed for the Quality Mark witha view to exhibiting in New Faces2001, you can have your workassessed at the next Quality Markselection.

For further information on thenext Quality Mark selection datesmake sure you keep an eye out inStopress.

Please note that if more than twocraftspeople are selected for NewFaces we will be balloting for thetwo places.

Subsidies

There are still a number of CraftsCouncil subsidies available tocraftspeople who have booked astand at Showcase. If you have notfilled in a subsidy application form

and feel that you are entitled toapply, please contact CatherineJordan as soon as possible.

Craftspeople who have filled in theforms and returned them toCatherine will be given details oftheir subsidy in early autumn.

Art in Action Festival,Townley Hall, Slane, Co. MeathThe 9th annual Art In Action tookplace the weekend of the 3rd, 4thand 5th of June 2000 and proved tobe another hugely successful eventfor the artists, visitors, andorganisers.

The event is organised by theSchool of Philosophy, who startedthis event with just one marqueenine years ago.The event has grownto incorporate over ten marqueesas well as events and lectures whichare hosted in the Georgianmansion itself.

For the working Artists, thesupport given by the School ofPhilosophy was incredible with finefood and beverages available all day,every day.

All kinds of demonstrations andclasses took place each day, fromthrowing, clay modeling, glassblowing, painting and aromatherapyto lectures on philosophy and theeconomic sciences.

There was truly something foreveryone and huge participation.

Expo 2000 Hannover, GermanyExpo 2000 is the first world fairof the new millennium andopened on the 1st June.

The Department of Enterprise,Trade and Employment puttogether the Irish Pavilion inconjunction with MurrayO'Laoire Architects and ShaneHolland Design Workshops.

Shane Holland, Antony Clearyand George Butler designed andinstalled unique furniture for thedirector's office and executivelounge.The furniture included aselection of tables in glass, Irishlaurel, cast bronze and steel andconference seating and loungingchairs in copper, birch, steel andleather.

Special NoticeA special edition of the renownedseries 'Hands' will be aired onRTE Wednesday 12th July at 7pm.The programme focuses on thewoodturner Uam O'Neill.

Liam was commissioned by thePhoenix Park to make a piece incelebration of the opening of thenew Visitors Centre in Ashtown.
