CBS SALUTES OUR VETERANS -- 2017
Just some of the many CBS employees who are veterans.

2017 CBS UPDATE SPECIAL VETERANS DAY EDITION“THE HIGH COST OF FREEDOM”
This is the week, each year, that we pause to recognize our military veter-
ans and their selfless service to our great nation. For over 242 years, in
times of war and peace, men and women from all walks of life and from
each successive generation have answered this most solemn, honorable
and sacred call.
Each year, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we are
called to reflect upon the cost of our freedom, a freedom that has a pro-
found and great price. In fact, since the inception of our country, 48 million
of our finest citizens have endured great hardship and horror with grace, and felt great lonliness thousands of
miles from home for long periods of time, which was made a bit easier by their brothers and sister in arms. They
have felt dread, faced down terror and felt the stinging bite of fear but through it all remained vigilant and faithful
to their mission. As I write this, four brave Army Green Berets were killed in an ambush during combat operations
in Niger. At the tip of the spear, men and women like these died in remote and dark places throughout the world
honoring their oath to the nation. For this sacrifice, we all owe a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid.
Please take a moment this Veterans Day to remember the 23 million living military veterans and the 1,197,045
who have given their full measure of devotion to the cause of freedom.
On behalf of the CBS Veterans Network, it once again gives me great pride to present our annual CBS Veterans
Update newsletter. President Theodore Roosevelt famously said: “Do what you can, with what you’ve got, where
you are.” I am proud to report that our CBS family continues to lead the way and is making a difference in the
lives of our nation’s veterans and their families. In the pages that follow, you will see the tremendous good that
our company is doing and the positive impact that we are all having. At his second inaugural address on March
25, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln reminded the nation of its most important responsibility: “To care for those
who have born the battle and their widow and their orphans.” I believe President Lincoln would be very proud of
the work that we are doing here at CBS to honor our bravest citizens.
To the nearly 400 veterans working at CBS and to the countless others who are no longer with the Company, a
very Happy Veterans Day. As you know, at CBS Corporation every day is Veterans Day, and we thank you and
we salute you!

PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICE FOR VETERANS
The CBS lawyers who participated in the New York City Bar’s Veterans’ Assistance Project over the past few years have
gotten positive results for their clients. One veteran who served in Afghanistan was awarded over $1,300 per month for post-
traumatic stress disorder after the Veterans Administration initially denied his claim. Another veteran -- whose initial claim for
disabilities incurred during a training accident was denied -- won his appeal with the assistance of his pro bono team. He was
awarded approximately $1,300 a month on top of his existing benefits. And finally, a Vietnam-era veteran was the subject of a
recoupment action by the VA for over $18,000 of pension debt due to an ongoing miscalculation by the VA. Thanks to the work
of the pro bono attorneys, the VA agreed to waive its recoupment action. The pro bono attorneys and their clients are awaiting
decisions from the VA on other claims as well. The CBS volunteer lawyers include Trupti Patel, Patrick Turner, Michelle
Vachris and Joseph Richburg, who spearheaded the pro bono partnership with the New York City Bar.
EYE ON: ECOMEDIA
CBS EcoMedia is making an impact with Team Rubicon and
other veteran organizations
Several weeks after Hurricane Harvey raged its way through
Texas, Team Rubicon’s Operation Hard Hustle is still in full
effect. As one of CBS EcoMedia’s newest nonprofit partners, Team Rubicon (TR)
deploys military veterans and first responders in the face of disaster. Now, thanks to
training funded by Nebraska Furniture Mart’s recent media investment through
EcoMedia, TR volunteers are carrying out multiple disaster-relief operations in
Texas, including everything from floodwater rescues to emergency home repairs.
While documenting this project, EcoMedia caught a poignant moment between several volunteers and a Vietnam vet named
Bruce (shown above). After Hurricane Harvey battered the inside of his Houston home, Bruce was forced to sleep in a tent in
his backyard and could only salvage a few of his belongings, including two flags given to his family members for serving our
country. The flags were destroyed by the floodwaters of Harvey, but a few caring veterans from TR made it their mission to
clean and return the flags. It was a powerful moment that shows the difference a few good hearts can make.
CBS EcoMedia advertisers participating in veteran-focused programs this year are also supporting many other crucial pro-
jects, including: Volunteers of America’s housing programs for homeless veterans, Military Order of the Purple Heart’s
scholarship program, and the Fisher House Foundation’s network of comfort homes where military and veterans’ families
can stay at no cost.
