Catholic Schools Week
Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed. As we celebrate Catholic Schools Week we are reminded of the reasons we are commit-
ted to Catholic education. We celebrate our families who partner with us in the faith
formation of their children and provide the opportunity for a balanced academic curricu-
lum that integrates faith, culture, and life. We celebrate our school, our children, and our
faculty.
Learn:
We offer an education that combines Catholic faith and teaching with academic excel-
lence. Our commitment to a strong curriculum is evidenced in our ongoing reflection,
analysis, and implementation of goals that support our teachers in leading our learners.
Our faculty and staff are dedicated, caring, and effective.
Serve:
Service is reflected in so many ways in our school culture. We serve each other with
kindness, respect, and loyalty. At a very early age the children understand the value of
service. This became very clear during our “bed for every child” initiative. As you
know, we not only met our goal of four beds, we doubled it to eight beds for children in
need. Our student government students took this program very seriously and spoke in
classrooms to their peers to foster an understanding of the need.
Lead:
Opportunities abound for students to learn and practice leadership skills. It is amazing to
see students of all ages prepare for a Student Government campaign.
Their courage and skill in preparing, identifying their “platform” and executing their
campaign is inspiring. The public speaking opportunities in the classroom transfer beau-
tifully to the public forum of campaigning. Our dream and our reality are children who
go make a difference in this world.
Succeed:
Succeed, they do. Our students succeed in the classroom and in the world. Our Holy
Name history is filled with success stories. Recent graduates who attend the best of
schools, graduates who attend and graduate from successful colleges, former students
who now bring their children to Holy Name, alumni who return to complete senior ser-
vice, graduates who have and are presently serving on our school board, and alumni
who answer the call when it comes from Holy Name Parish School. Success!!!!
Congratulations to all on a Catholic Schools week that is evidenced throughout the year.
Warmly,
Kathleen J. Caulfield

Holy Name Celebrates Literacy on National Reading Day—January 23rd Stop, Drop and Read Mrs. Caulfield announced at precisely 1:45 p.m. on January 23rd. The entire school
stopped and picked up a book to celebrate National Reading Day. From Nursery - Gr. 6 students, teachers
and administrators alike were reading novels, chapter books, comic books, magazines or looking at pic-
ture books. Nursery and KI also had special visitors stop by during the day to read to them! Dr. Seuss
once said -"You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book!"
Holy Name Happenings! Kindergarten and Library report news from their classrooms. Check the PlusPortal as
they will be the featured photos in February.
If you’re looking for a peaceful oasis of quiet in our busy school, don’t expect to find it in the Library!
With the exception of 5-10 minutes of “Quiet Reading” per class, the Library is a busy, active place for KII-
Grade 6. Here’s what’s been going on… Grade 6 practiced public speaking this fall, featuring good breathing
techniques and better diction (“Lips, teeth, tip of the tongue”, borrowed from Mr. Tom). The students were ex-
cellent peer reviewers giving their fellow students some feed-back as they previewed the Nursery Rhyme seg-
ment of the program. In December, each 6th Grade class presented Voices of Christmas, a retelling of the Christ-
mas narrative from many points of view. Grade 5 spends a few minutes of each Library period on etymology,
Fun with Word Roots. They can be very creative with the English language! Students in Grades 3 and 4 are get-
ting to “Know Your Library”. Each week we feature interesting ( I hope) books from different sections of the
Library, encouraging the students to explore new topics. The Second Graders are hearing folktales and legends
from around the world. It’s great to see their eyes light up when they recognize a theme they heard before. We
have some lively discussions about similarities and differences between stories and cultures. For KII students and
First Graders, we try to lay a foundation of common cultural literacy by reading classic picture books and
fairytales mixed with current favorites. Although the kids from the ECC don’t come to Library, we have
storytime each week, beginning each class with a healthy dose of Nursery Rhymes.
By the time you’re reading this, Scholastic Book Fair will be in full swing. Thank you, thank you, thank
you to all our volunteers for giving their time so willingly. The kids love seeing you and we all appreciate your
help and enthusiasm. Thanks, also , to all our families for supporting the Book Fair. Your children learn from
you that reading is important and fun. Keep on reading!
Kindergarten has been slipping and sliding into our huge Penguin
unit. We have enjoyed reading a variety of penguin books, both fiction
and non-fiction. Even though we are learning in our classroom, in our
minds, we are 9 thousand miles away, braving the harsh winds of Antarc-
tica.
If you walked by our classroom and saw us with pillows strapped
to our bellies, perhaps you thought we were getting ready to take a nap.
But no! We were learning how to waddle like penguins, and how to keep
our eggs safe, just like the male Emperor penguins do for 2 long months!
Students and teachers alike are amazed by the penguin life cycle— mostly that the male penguin doesn't eat
for 2 months! They carry their eggs on the brood pouch on their feet..we practiced with footballs!
We were tracking our penguin friends across the world in their natural habitats using live webcams.
We watched Gentoo penguins belly sliding in Antarctica, and African penguins waddling in the San Diego
Zoo. Penguins don’t just live in the south pole! They are different sizes, look different, and live in different
climates.
