COAT & BLANKET DRIVE October 29th is LAST WKD

(AND ACFP CHRISTMAS BOUTIQUE) St. Vincent DePaul’s Annual Coat & Blanket Drive is here! We set aside coats for those families helped by The Giving Tree (run by the Knights of

Columbus and Ladies Auxiliary). We then take coats to Affton Christian Food Pantry and to Immaculate Conception SVDP Conference in Park Hills (Fr. Ebert’s parish). A group of St. Simon parishioners takes the coats & blankets to this rural parish. We take your donations on the day of their only parish fundraiser- a Chicken & Dumpling Dinner with a Christmas Bazaar and Bake Sale. Our Annual Coat & Blanket Drive this year runs through Sunday, October 29. Large labeled bins will be in the church foyer, the school office and Simon Says. We are accepting CLEAN, gently used and new coats & blankets. We are also collecting winter hats, gloves, mittens and scarves. Our trip to Park Hills is Sunday, November 5. For questions, directions or to carpool to Park Hills, call Diane Rasch at 845-8442.

We will be collecting items for the Affton Christian Food Pantry Christmas Boutique at the same time as our Coat & Blanket Drive. A labeled bin will be in the church foyer for donations of new items. Items to donate include flashlights, hand tools, tape measures, new socks, gloves, toys, board games, household items, barrettes, jewelry, etc. Items can be $10 or less in value. Thank you for helping us to help others.

Thirtieth Sunday in

Ordinary Time Love your neighbor. It sounds so simple. Yet it is not always easy to accomplish.

Many things get in the way of taking this commandment to heart. Sometimes, it is things that get in the way, but more often, we get in the way. We tend to see things through our own perspective, rather than considering the other person's point of view. In our interactions with others, we often fail to truly listen, focusing instead on our next response or point to be made. We say we love our neighbor, right up to the point at which doing so requires some sacrifice of time, attention, or financial support, and then suddenly, a thousand reasons for keeping to ourselves emerge. Jesus knew this when he summed up the great commandments of loving God and neighbor. Notice what he said about this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

LOVE GOD

"You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind" (Matthew 22:37). In this greatest and first commandment, Jesus describes deep and intentional love of God. Like the Thessalonians to whom Saint Paul wrote, we are to turn away from anything that could become an idol, anything that takes first place in our lives ahead of God. Loving God so completely calls us to place our lives in the heart of God, assured that when we do, all will be well. When we love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, we gradually learn to see the world and all people through the eyes of God, who is love.

LOVE NEIGHBOR

When God gave the covenant to Moses, the commandments of loving God and neighbor were clear, including what love of neighbor is all about. For example, "You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourself in the land of Egypt" (Exodus 22:20). In other words, care for the least among you; their struggles are not so different from your own. And remember, they are precious in God's sight, as are you. All are held in love by our good and gracious God. Jesus is the ultimate sign of God's love, and the perfect model of what it means to love God. Jesus teaches that real love requires sacrifice. There are moments when loving our neighbor requires us to put the other person first. No longer is it just nice to help the person who is poor, ill, lonely, in prison, homeless, or grieving. It is necessary. Their need is greater than our own. Failing to meet the person in his or her need is to ignore our very self. To love God is to love our neighbor; to love others is to love God, in whose image all are made. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Volunteers are needed to help wash/iron purificators used at mass. Work is done on a rotation with others. For more information, call Barb Schoenig at 892-6445.

Parish Stewardship of Treasure :

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – True Love of Neighbor Jesus builds upon His teachings from last week by highlighting the importance of loving our neighbor. Faith is not a private matter but must be shared and actively lived in charity toward our brothers and sisters. Woe to us if we observe a neighbor in need and do not seek to minister to his/her needs. In the Old Testament, God instructed the Jewish people to show love and mercy toward Gentiles, aliens, and the poor. Now Jesus reiterates and expands this commandment to all people. As John writes in his first letter, “But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the love of God abide in him?” (1 John 3:17). If we truly love God, then we will have deep concern for the welfare of those in need. archstl.org/dynamic

October 29, 2017 - 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” - MATTHEW 22:37 Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and everything you are is a gift from God? The good news – it’s not too late to put God first in your life in all things.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Harry Sexton, husband of Mary Sexton; and for Jasper Patrico, father of Tony (Lisa) Patrico. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

Jonah Prayer Ministry The first Sunday of the month, November 5th, the Jonah prayer ministry is available after the 11am Mass to pray with anyone who wants prayer for a specific concern. This would include illness, upcoming surgery, family, job, or financial concerns. Jesus wants us to bring our burdens to Him, He wants us to "seek Him in all things". The team has been trained in praying for people and all prayer is confidential. Just come to the front of church at the votive light side. For those who go to an earlier Mass, we are normally there till 12:30 or until all have been prayed for.
