Mons. Geno Sylva Rector

“God is a good father and we are all Brothers and Sisters.”

Have a Blessed New Year to One and All! In his Urbi et Orbi Message (to the City and to the World), Pope Francis reflected on how the Christian message is about a child who came to tell us that “God is a good Father and we are all brothers and sisters”. He noted that without Jesus’ gift of fraternity, what we do to build a more just world would be “soulless and empty…. My wish for a happy Christmas is a wish for fraternity”. In our mission of the new evangelization here at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, we strive together as sisters and brothers—through our worship, our faith formation programs, and our outreach to those in need—to build a more just world. We do this by helping one another to experience the mercy of God and, thus, have an encounter with our God who is a “good Father”. Each one of us, the members of Christ’s Body the Church, has a particular gift given by God that is meant to be shared for the purpose of building the Kingdom. This gift may be in social media, technology, music, catechesis, liturgy, youth ministry, maintenance, strategic planning, fundraising, finance, etc. To all those who already so generously share their gifts and talents with us here at the Cathedral, “thank you so much”! And to those who would like to become involved in our mission of helping others encounter our “good Father”, please contact us, as we look forward to you joining us as a sister or brother! On behalf of the priests, deacons, and lay staff of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, we wish to each of you and your families all of our “good Father’s” blessings in the new year!! Thank you for your fraternity! Msgr. Geno Sylva Rector

Entrustment to Mary, Our Spiritual Mother

The possibility of entrusting our lives to Mary began at the Annunciation. It was at that very moment that Mary was introduced into the mystery of Christ. During that exchange between Mary and the Angel Gabrielle, her unique role and specific participation in the salvific work of her Son was marked out. Yet, it was only in her response, her human fiat and her entrustment to the Lord in the words, “let it be done to me”, that she submitted her intellect and her will to God and demonstrated her obedience in faith. And what was it a yes to? It was a yes to being the mother of the Lord. But this yes, this fiat, did not confine her role only to giving birth to the Messiah, but it was also her agreement to be a coworker in the salvific work of her Son. This extraordinary cooperation of Mary began at the Annunciation and would continue throughout her life and culminate at the foot of the cross. She had indeed said “yes” to two orders of motherhoods. The motherhood according to the flesh was instantaneous, while that of the spirit would continue to unfold and develop for Mary as she continued to participate in the mission of her Son. Yet, her spiritual motherhood has never ended. When Jesus was breathing his last on the cross and there beside him were His mother and His beloved disciple. What did He say to them: “Woman, behold your son”, “Behold your mother”. As her entrustment to Jesus began with her words of “yes” at the Annunciation, with these very words of our Lord on the cross, her entrustment to each one of us, her spiritual children, continues on for Christ gives her to us as our spiritual mother. How blessed we are that our God always knows our needs even before we do. On the cross he recognized that though we may have wonderful earthly mothers, our need for tenderness and mercy can never be satiated by just one person, that we would need another, one who has taken her place in heaven as Mother of the Church. All of God’s blessings on you and your family in the new year!!!

Msgr. Geno Sylva

¿Qué les dijo Él: "Mujer, he aquí tu hijo", "He aquí a tu madre".
