Ancient Period

clay tablets

Pinakes (s. Panax) – tablets placed above the library press that served as a guide to its content

Greek Civilization—use of author entry

Roman period—2 varieties of catalogs

classified—based on shelf arrangment

bibliographical—continuity through authors

A.D. 236-Christianity became the state religion

Constantinople (A.D. 336)

Page 4: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Middle Ages

Monasteries—manuscripts; codex

inventory records only

Reichenau, Germany

Benedictine House of St., Requier

Myriobiblion (comp. 842-848 A.D.) by Photius,

--a review of approx. 280 works with bibliographic, biographic, and critical information

Page 5: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Late Middle Ages

Inventory list with a general lack of system on a 2-column parchment with books assigned to a fixed location; press marks were added to books to aid reshelving

Broad subject arrangement; Titles subarranged chronologically

Glastonbury catalog (1247)—books by obscure authors were under subjects; those with well-known writers were under authors

Registrum Librorum Angliae, 1250-1296

Page 6: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Reformation—shift of power from the church to secular organizations

Printed books entailed bibliographic organization

St. Augustine's’ Library of Canterbury (1497)—catalog comprised of 3 parts:

1. location list—location and the borrower

2. alphabetical listing of all books in the library with reference to a page number of the catlaog where the full entries and the press marks could be found

3. The main section of the catalog

Page 7: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Johann Tritheim—chorological arrangement with an alphabetical index of authors

the finding list theory became recognized

Konrad Gesner—Father of Universal Bibliography

Page 8: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Konrad Gesner—Bibliotheca Universalis (1545)

v. 1—list of all authors arranged by Christian name plus a list of author’s names in inverted order

v. 2—Pandectarum—rearrangement of v. 1 under 21 subject headings

Page 9: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Florian Trefler—suggested five catalogs:

1. author list arranged alphabetically2. classified or shelflist arrangement3. subject index to the contents of all

books4. an alphabetical index to #35. list of books in reserve because of age or condition

Andrew Maunsell—a dictionary arrangement was followed with a single alphabet of authors arranged by surnames rather than Christian names

anonymous works were entered under title, subject, or both

Page 10: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Thomas Bodley—Bodleian Catalogue (1674)

arranged by the author’s surnames (only one form of the author’s name was used; an assumed name with cross references was used if the author’s name was not given)

catchword titles for anonymous works

Translations entered under original author

Gabriel Naude—2 compilations:

1. by class, with subdivisions

2. alphabetical author catalog

Page 11: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

John Dury (1650)—concluded that space on the shelves and in the printed catalog should allow for expansion; reference on the location of the books on the shelves be included

Frederic Rostgaard—a double page, divided into columns, which designated size and the chronological arrangement of entries wihin each column and the chronological arrangement of entries in each column with accession number and a letter to designate the subject

The catalogs produced in America in the 18th c. favored the size or author arrangement or both with only 3/24 relying upon the subject approach.

Page 12: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

French Government (1791)

From assembling and numbering of books to the mailing of completed cards to Paris; use of playing cards or slips of paper (1st instance)

The completed code was to contain an accession number, title exactly as recorded in the book unless lengthy, imprint, size, and exceptional features.

Cards were arranged alphabetically and fastened together by a thread through the lower left-hand corner

Page 13: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Anthony Panizzi (1837)—Keeper of Printed Books of the British Museum; worked with Edward Edwards, J.W. Jones, J.H. Parry, and Thomas Watts to formulate the “Ninety-one Rules”

Page 14: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Anthony Panizzi (1837) -- Ninety-one Rules”

He was a fervent supporter of the author catalog; vested authority on the title page (consistent with the Bodleian Catalog of 1674)Anonymous works were separated into corporate bodies, and forming of heading groups where possible (e.g. ACADEMIES, EPHEMERIDES, LITURGIES, etc.)

Page 15: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Frederick Poole (1854)—the catalog of the Boston Mercantile Library had a single sequence of authors, titles, and subjects

Charles C. Jewett—was a librarian of the Smithsonian Institution and then the Boston Public Library in 1857; 33 rules

Page 16: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Charles C. Jewett, 33 rules continued the title entry idea with

synonymous words scattered but employed duplicate entries and cross references (the greatest improvement of all)

established U.S. as author; pseudonyms are entered under real

names; anonymous works are entered under the

first word of the title; made use of form

headings as entry

Page 17: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Charles Ammi Cutter (1876)—Boston Athenaeum; continued the work of Poole

Page 18: Catalogs and Cataloguing

Modern Period

Charles Ammi Cutter (1876)

Rules for a Printed Dictionary Catalog; 349 rules

Author headings were established with full names; identity of authors of anonymous works were sought, otherwise, entered under first word of the title.

Unique subject headings were employed without regard to the title

Contents notes were added, with analytics made for these, as well as entries for periodical articles and society publications

AA 1908 (Joint Code)

ALA catalog rules: author and title entries

reflected the influence of the previous codes (Panizzi’s, Jewett’s, Cutter’s, and the current LC practice)

rules for subject headings were omitted

ALA Draft 1941 (draft of 2nd ed. of AA 1908)

cooperation between American an d British librarians

2 parts: entry headings and description

Page 20: Catalogs and Cataloguing

ALA 1949

included only the rules for entry and headings (omitted from the 1941 Draft the rules for description)

LC Rules 1949

International Standard Bibliographic DescriptionSpearheaded by IFLAObjectives:

1. make records from different sources interchangeable;

2. assist in the interpretation of records across language barriers; and

3. assist in the conversion of bibliographic records to machine-readable form

AACR chp. 6, 12, 14, were revised in 1974 to conform to ISBD

ISBD(G), 1976

Universal Bibliographic ControlSimply an ideal or a dreamWas the theme of the 39th IFLA meeting in

1973 which was adopted as a goal for ultimate international cooperation

The basic idea was to have each document cataloged only once, as near to the source of publication as possible, and to make basic bibliographic data on all publications issued in all countries universally and promptly available in a form that is internationally acceptable

Page 27: Catalogs and Cataloguing
