Air Bleed ValvesUsage and OperationThis valve may be used to simplifypump priming at start-up in a blockedcircuit , or to remove air trapped in the system.

When used to facilitate priming, thevalve is teed into the pump outlet, asclose to the pump as possible, andupstream of the balance of the circuit.

It lets air pass at low pressure (start-up)to the drain, and shuts off oil flow atpressures above 0,83 bar (12 psi).

The valve will pass 7,6 L/min (2 USgpm)just before shutting off. Therefore, it isrecommended only for systems with aminimum supply that exceeds 7,6 L/min(2 USgpm.)

When used to remove air trapped in thesystem, the valve should be placed atthe highest point of the circuit

Angle and Globe Valves, Needle and Plug Types

General DataPlug-type valves are used mainly toopen or close a portion of a hydrauliccontrol circuit. They are recommendedwhere restricted fluid flow (pressuredrop) should be minimized.

Needle-type valves are used forrestricting fluid flow (for example, to pilotcontrol circuits), or for any other

purpose where uniform flow rates arenot essential.

Plug-type valves are made of carbonsteel, including the stem. Needle valvesare made of forged carbon steel andhave a stainless steel stem. All valvesare suitable for use with all commonly used hydraulic fluids.

PressureMaximum operating pressure is 210bar(3000 psig).

Air-type Oil Coolers

General DataAir-type coolers provide ample oilcooling where water is too costly or not readily available. They also increase ambient air temperature bycirculating waste heat absorbed in thecooling process.

The coolers have an efficient heat transfer element or core made of steeltubes, aluminum fins, and tubular steelmanifolds. An electric motor-driven fanforces air across the cooling element.

Coolers are designed for one- ortwo-pass installations. The two-passarrangement is especially adaptablewhere very low flows are encountered.See selection procedure below.

RatingsMaximum operating pressure is 20,7 bar (300 psi). The temperature ofentering fluid must not exceed 204° C(400° F). For effective oil cooling, ambient air temperature should notexceed 40° C (104° F).

Click here for flow data shown incurves for one-pass installations.

Click here for two-pass flow data.

Cooler Selection ProcedureExample 1: Oil flow rate is 189 L/min(50 USgpm) and cooler must remove381 Btu/min (9 hp). Ambient airtemperature is 24° C (75° F). Oiltemperature is 52° C (125° F).

Electric Motor Data

Step No. 1: For 189 L/min (50 USgpm),a single-pass installation is indicated.From performance curves, note that atthe temperature difference – 52° C(125° F) minus 24° C (75° F) – in thesingle-pass mode, the OCA-130-30 willremove about 350 Btu.

Step No. 2: Since the performance of the single-pass OCA-130-30 is basedon 57 L/min (15 USgpm), apply a heattransfer correction factor for 189 L/min (50 USgpm) from the heattransfer graph.

The correction factor is 1.37, and 1.37 350 Btu = 480 Btu. This showsthat in this application OCA-130-30 willremove 480 Btu/min, a good safetyfactor for the 381 Btu/min required.

Step No. 3: From pressure drop curves, and based on the viscosity range of theoil being cooled, establish the pressuredrop through the cooler at 52° C (125° F).

Click here for curves. The protecting check valve around thecooler should bypass at a pressure atleast 25% above the 52° C (125° F)pressure drop to assure full flow throughthe cooler at normal system flow. Athigher viscosities during systemwarm-up, the system back pressuremay be up to the check valve bypasspressure. Heat transfer is not muchaffected by viscosity, but pressure dropis affected.

Click here for curves. Determine that this pressure isacceptable in the circuit.

Example 2: Oil flow rate is 38 L/min (10 USgpm) and cooler must remove381 Btu/min (9 hp). Ambient airtemperature is 24° C (75° F). Oiltemperature is 52° C (125° F).

Step No. 1: For 38 L/min (10 USgpm), a two-pass installation is indicated.From performance curves, note that atthe temperature difference – 52° C (125° F) minus 24° C (75° F) –in the single pass mode, theOCA-174-30 will remove about 400 Btu.

Step No. 2: Since the performance of the two-pass OCA-174-30 is based on 34 L/min (9 USgpm), apply aheat transfer correction factor for 38L/min (10 USgpm) from the heat transfer graph.

The correction factor is 1.05, and 1.05 400 Btu = 420 Btu. This shows that in this application theOCA-174-30 will remove 420 Btu/min,an acceptable safety factor for the 381Btu/min required.

Step No. 3: Follow the procedure inExample 1, but use different pressuredrop curves.

Motor ConnectionsConnect motor to power supply forvoltage and frequency (cycles) on motornameplate only, and according todiagram furnished with motor. Connecttwo-speed switch, when furnished, according to diagram included withtwo-speed switch. Before turning onelectric power, rotate fan by hand, making sure it has proper clearance andhas not been damaged.

If motor is to be protected againstovercurrent through a motor starter orother overcurrent device, selectovercurrent relays or heaters based onactual measured current draw of motoron completed installation. (Do not usenameplate amperes.) Motor load on thiscooler is based on actual temperaturetest of motor.

Motor LubricationLubricate according to instructionsfurnished with motor.

FluidsPerformance is based on the use ofpetroleum oil. Contact your Vickersrepresentative when other fluids are tobe cooled.

FiltrationA strainer or filter should be installedahead of the cooler (if not locatedelsewhere in the system) to trap scale, dirt, or sludge that may bepresent in the circuit, or accumulatesfrom oil breakdown.

Pressure SurgesA spring-loaded check valve installed inparallel with the cooler is recommendedto provide overload protection againstexcessive pressure surges.

EnvironmentAvoid locating the cooler in a corrosiveatmosphere. Rapid deterioration of thecasing, cooling element, fan and motormay occur, resulting in shortened life.

CleaningDirt on cooling element fins reduces airflow and cooling capacity. Do not bendor damage cooling element fins. Dirt onfan blades reduces air output and maythrow fan out of balance and overloadmotor. Dirt on the motor reducesventilation and cooling, causingoverheating and possible burnout. Clean as required to provide optimumcooling efficiency.

Once a year, disconnect piping andcirculate a degreasing agent or flushingoil through the cooler to remove sludgefrom internal tube surfaces to return theunit to full capacity.

Temperature Control & Bulb WellThe temperature control (modelOCTC-1-21) has a bulb that installs inthe system reservoir, senses oiltemperature, and causes the cooler’sfan motor to turn on or off. Thetemperature setting is adjusted with anexternal knob and calibrated scale. Aswitch differential of –16 to –12° C(3 to 10° F) is adjustable with a wheellocated under the control’s cover.

The temperature range of the control is13 to 79° C (55 to 175° F). Maximumsafe bulb temperature is 93° C (200° F).Maximum bulb pressure is 3,4 bar (50 psi). The electrical rating is 8 amp @120 Vac; 5.1 amp @ 240 Vac.

The stainless steel bulb well (modelOCBW-2-20) should be used when it’snecessary to protect the element of thetemperature control’s bulb frommechanical or chemical damage, or topermit removal of the bulb withoutdraining the reservoir.

The temperature control and bulb wellare not included with the cooler andmust be ordered separately.

Water-type Oil Coolers

General DataVickers water-type coolers areadaptable to a wide range of oil coolingapplications. They are of fixed tubebundle construction with an internalmultiple fin arrangement on the shellside. The shells are made of brass forthe OCW-1-B-30 cooler, and of steel forall other models.

Hydraulic fluid circulates through thecooler and around copper tubescontaining the water. The water carriesthe heat away from the hydraulic fluidand can be regulated thermostatically tomaintain a desired temperature. Thecooler may be used as a heater bycirculating hot water, rather than cold, through it.

Coolers are designed for one- ortwo-pass installations. See “CoolerSelection Procedure”.

RatingsMaximum operating pressures areshown in the table below. The maximumoperating temperature is 149° C (300° F). Flow data is shown in curveson the following page.

Cooler Selection ProcedureThe size of the cooler required for aparticular set of conditions can beselected from the curves on thefollowing page. When entering watertemperature is other than 29° C (85° F),the actual capacity of the cooler isgreater or less than the curve values, depending upon whether the watertemperature is respectively lower orhigher. (See “CAUTION” note belowcurves chart.

When the required flow exceeds themaximum capacity of the largest cooler, two smaller coolers of equal size shouldbe used in parallel.

Example 1: Assume an installationwhere the oil flow rate is 151 L/min (40USgpm) and the cooler must remove25 hp of the average duty cycle. Thetemperature of the available water is 29°C (85° F). As the curves are based on29° C (85° F) entering water, the coolercan be selected directly from them. From the chart on the following page, determine the point of intersection oflines representing 151 L/min (40USgpm) and 25 hp. By reading upwardand/or to the left to the curve for thesmaller cooler, it is seen that a modelOCW-S-3-F-30 cooler should be used, and that the 4:1 (see explanationdirectly under curve) oil-to-water ratioindicates a minimum required water flowof 38 L/min (10 USgpm)

Example 2: Assume an installationwhere the oil flow rate is 208 L/min (55 USgpm) and the cooler mustremove 35 hp of the average duty cycle. The entering water temperature is 35° C(95° F).

As indicated by the table of watertemperature correction factors, capacityof a cooler with 35° C (95° F) water isonly .7 of what it would be with 29° C(85° F) water. Therefore, divide the 35hp by .7 and refer that value (50 hp) tothe curves. Determine the point ofintersection of lines representing 208L/min (55 USgpm) and 50 hp, then readupward and/or to the left to the curve forthe smaller cooler. ModelOCW-F-6-F-30 satisfies theseconditions. However, the curves showthat model is capable of removing the50 hp but cannot handle the 208 L/min(55 USgpm). By using a globe valve forbypassing a portion of the oil flow, or acheck valve that has a crackingpressure equal to the P of the coolerwhich would result in the proper flowrate through the cooler, the smallerOCW-S-5-F-30 cooler could be used.

These capacities are based on an entering water temperature of 29°C (85°F) and a reservoir oil temperature of 52°C (125°F). Oil-to-water ratio of 1:1, 2:1 or 4:1 (preceding each cooler model number) means that for every gallon of oil circulated , aminimum of 1, 1/2 or 1/4 gallon (respectively) of water must be circulated to obtain the capacity shown on curve.

CAUTION: When the entering oil temperature is not 29°C (85°F), the desired horsepower removal value must be corrected for higher or lower temperatures before referring to these curves. See formula and chart below.

Temperature corrected by horsepower removal rate = horsepower to be removed by cooler by water temperature correction factor. See Example 2, preceding page. Entering Water, °C (°F)

Water-type Oil Coolers

Temperature Control & Bulb WellThe OCRV-1 temperature control valveis self-contained and is complete withthermostat bulb and capillary tube; itoperates independently of any externalpower source.

Click here for view of OCRV-1.This is a modulating control and is notalternately open wide and shut tight.During normal operation, it remains in aconstant, partially open position which isautomatically adjusted wheneverconditions require. The result is auniform oil temperature for constantfeed rates, etc.; water is conserved andthe human factor eliminated.

To decrease the hydraulic fluidtemperature, turn the control valve’scalibration screw counterclockwise, 1/2turn at a time; to increase, turnclockwise. Each adjustment willprobably take 30 to 60 minutes to showas a change in reservoir oil temperature.

The temperature control valve should beinstalled in the water inlet line of thecooler. Do not use pipe wrenches forinstalling. A dent in the valve body or asharp bend in the capillary may prevent

operation. Do not subject the control towater-hammer conditions or excessivepressures. The control opens onpressure rise.

The stainless steel bulb well (modelOCBW-1-10) should be used when it’snecessary to prevent corrosion, or sothat the bulb can be removed withoutdraining the reservoir. The bulb shouldbe located where it will be most affectedby temperature changes of the hydraulic fluid.

The temperature control and bulb wellare not included with the cooler andmust be ordered separately.

Pressure SurgesUse a check valve with suitable crackingpressure, piped in parallel with thecooler, to provide overload protectionagainst oil flow surges and resultingpeak pressures.

FluidsCoolers are suitable for commonly used hydraulic fluids (in shell side where no seals are involved). Forfire-resistant fluids, cooler sizing should

be reviewed by Vickers sincetemperature and heat removalcharacteristics vary with the type of fluidbeing cooled. Clean soft water shouldbe used in the tube side. These coolersare not for use with high water basefluids. For HWBF applications, contactyour Vickers representative.

StrainerAn OCST-1 “Y” type brass strainershould be installed just ahead of thetemperature control valve to protect itand the cooler from large particles ofdirt. The strainer is cleanable by simplyremoving a pipe plug, and withoutdisconnecting piping. For cleaningwithout service interruption, a blow-offvalve can be connected to the cleanout opening.

Diaphragm Pressure GagesGeneral DataThese compact gages are for use withVickers series OFRS filters, or formonitoring low pressure hydraulic orpneumatic systems. They have a 0 to 8bar (0 to 120 psig) range with a 10%accuracy, and are capable ofwithstanding pressures up to 27,5 bar(400 psig).

The gages have a steel case with astainless steel bezel, and a white dialface. Two pressure ranges are shownon the face; bar numerals in blue, andpsi in black. Scratch-resistant temperedglass is used over the gage face.

Two gage models are available:GM-120-2-10 (assembly no.736129) forstem mounting, and GP-120-2-10(assembly no.593255) for panelmounting.

Operating PressureThe operating pressure range is 0 to 8bar (0 to 120 psi).

InstallationCertain applications require gagesnubbing to prevent the gage fromoscillating and to protect it frompressure surges. It is recommendedthat the gage be isolated from thehydraulic system with a shutoff valve tominimize excessive pressure surgesand to allow it to be serviced withoutinterrupting the hydraulic system.

Bourdon Tube Pressure Gages

General DataThese gages are designed to beinstalled locally in a system, or flushmounted in a display panel. Available in2-1/2 and 4-inch sizes, they provideoptimum performance under severeoperating conditions by minimizing theeffects of hydraulic system pulsationsand mechanical vibrations.

The gages are filled with glycerine – astable viscous fluid which dampens theBourdon tube, amplifying device, andpointer movement to ensure constantlyaccurate readings and long life. A fixed-orifice snubber within the gage’spressure connection also dampenspointer oscillation and protects the gageagainst damage from pressure surges.

All models have a safety blowout discfor operational safety. An acrylic windowwith a pressure equalizing membrane isemployed to eliminate erroneousreadings due to glycerine expansions orcontractions resulting from ambienttemperature changes.

All 2-1/2” gages have a cast brass case, and a slotted polished-brass bezel (orbeauty ring) that’s retained by a screwon each side of the gage. The 4” gagehas a silver-sprayed case and chromeplated bezel.

Operating PressureThe gages are calibrated in both barand psi, read zero at atmosphericpressure, and ignore atmosphericpressure throughout their pressurerange. See chart below for pressurerange, mounting, connection, and size combinations.

InstallationStem-mounting gages have a bottomconnection that installs directly into atest point of the fluid system.

Panel-mounting gages have a rearconnection and are flush mounted and secured in an equipment panel by a flange. The panel requires a 63,5 or101,6 mm (2-1/2 or 4 in.) minimumdiameter hole for the gage/flangeassembly, which goes into the hole fromthe panel front. Three screw holes arerequired in the panel for fastening theflange to the panel. See following pagefor flange dimensions.

When a gage is installed permanently, ashutoff valve or gage isolator shouldalso be installed. This will prolong gagelife by isolating the gage from thehydraulic system, except when taking areading, and will allow gage servicingwithout interrupting the system.

Panel-mounting FlangeA panel-mounted gage requires the useof a mounting flange: model FGP-2-30for a 2-1/2” gage, or FGP-4-30 for a 4”gage. Stem-mounting gages can also bepanel mounted by using these flanges.

The flange replaces the bezel that’sshipped with the gage, and is retainedby two screws on the gage. Flanges arenot furnished with any gage and mustbe purchased separately.

FluidsAll commonly used hydraulic fluids maybe used.

Spring-loaded Pressure GagesGeneral DataThese gages are used in hydraulicsystems when it is desirable tocontinuously monitor system pressuresthroughout constantly changing cycles. They are also helpful in setting systempressure controls and assessing theoutput performance of hydraulicallyoperated machines. No needle valve, snubber, or gage isolator is needed toapply the gage.

The gages are available with two typesof pressure indicator. One allowspressure to be read in both bar and psi.The other is color coded to showwhether system pressure is within anacceptable operating range, making itsuitable for systems wherein a specificpressure need not be known. Eithergage can be mounted anyplace in asystem – at any angle – and is readablefrom any point within a 360 degree fieldof vision.

Pressure RangesThe operating pressure ranges fornumerically calibrated models are:

Vacuum and Pressure SwitchesThese switches actuate a remoteindicating device by making electricalcontact when a preselected pressuresetting is reached. They are for generaluse in low pressure hydraulic circuits, and are often used to tell when a filter’selement should be replaced

(by indicating a rising pressuredifferential across the element).

Two styles of electrical connection areavailable: wire leads (style “A”), orterminal screws (style “B”). Style “A” has a 1/2 inch female pipe connectionfor conduit to run wires from the leads.

Caution: Consult local electrical codeswhen using the style “B” design. Use ofan insulation boot is recommended withthis switch.
