Advanced Instrumentation with Built in High Performance and ConvenienceOur Ultrasonic Homogenizers offer precision engineering with all the features necessary to create a total system for ultrasonic disruption.

It can disintegrate most cells, bacteria, spores or tissue. It can prepare an emulsion down to 1/100 of a micron, homogenize “immiscible” liquids, accelerate enzymatic and chemical reactions, stimulate bacterial activity, disperse solids in liquids and degas liquids.

How it WorksThe ultrasonic power supply transforms line voltage to high frequency 20 kHz of electrical energy. This electrical energy is transmitted to the probe, where it is changed to mechanical energy. The vibrations from the probe are coupled to, and intensified, by the titanium tip. The probe vibrates in a longitudinal direction, and transmits this motion to the titanium tip immersed in the solution. Cavitation results, in which microscopic vapor bubbles are formed momentarily and implode, causing powerful infinitesimal shock waves to radiate throughout the solution in proximity to the radiating face of the tip.

Automatic TuningOur Ultrasonic Homogenizers employ a proprietary feedback system, insuring that the Ultrasonic Homogenizer is always working at its maximum efficiency regardless of the application. There is no need for constant adjustment by the operator. The percentage of ultrasonic power emitted is indicated by the output meter, enabling accurate, reproducible results.

PerformanceThe ultrasonic generators provide continuous duty operation on difficult or large scale applications.

For speed and accuracy in antibiotic potency testing by agar diffusion, nothing is more efficient in your microbiology laboratory than the Peni Cylinder Dispenser. Our Peni Cylinder Dispensers save time by automating the tedious task of manually placing Peni Cylinders into a 100 mm petri dish.

All internal components are manufactured using Stainless Steel, for ease of chemical sterilization. Both Hopper configurations of the Peni Cylinder Dispenser use internally lubricated bearings and therefore, autoclave sterilization is not recommended. This will damage the bearings.

Page 18: Catalogo Biologics

A Manual Dispenser is available where Peni Cylinders are manually fed into an 18” long Feeder Rod. When ordering the Manual Dispenser, specify the number of Feeder Rods needed for your application.

The Manual Dispenser unit can be easily converted to either a Manual Hopper or a Motorized Hopper. All Dispensers can be modified to use either plastic or glass petri dishes.

AutomatedColony Counter05

www.biologics-inc.com Automated Colony Counters 22

Many biological procedures depend on an accurate count of the bacterial colonies and other organisms. The enumeration of such colonies is a slow, tedious task. When counts are made by more than one technician, wide variations are often noted. Various attempts have been made to speed up the process and to improve counting precision.

With the development of the BioLogics family of counter/analyzers, significant engineering advancements have been made to provide greater potential for accuracy and precision in a wide range of colony counting applications. Among the technological improvements that have enhanced accuracy and precision are: 1) Significant increase in sensitivity to detect smaller colonies in low contrast media; and 2) more sophisticated and expanded illumination systems to increase the range of visibility and broaden the scope of applications.

To a large extent, accurate colony counting depends on the ability to “see” colonies distinctly, whether viewed by the naked eye, or by an automated instrument. Colony morphology is largely a result of the characteristics of the growth media and other environmental conditions. To enhance visibility of colonies and enhance the counting accuracy in an even broader range of applications, it is good practice to employ those procedures that form colonies that are readily discernible by their improved size, shape, distribution and contrast.

The AccuCount series automated counters have outstanding sensitivity and resolution, permitting counting of a wide range of object types and sizes, including bacterial colonies, cells, industrial particles, etc.

Objects can be virtually any shape. Clearly defined or hazy. Dark or light. As long as there is a detectable difference in the light contrast levels of the object and the background, and at least 0.1 mm of separation between objects, the AccuCount series counters will provide accurate counts.

The detection feature insures optimum precision with a visual indicator. The unique flagging system places an illuminated dot in the upper left-hand corner of each scanned object. The operator sees exactly what objects are being analyzed.

The adjustable aperture allows the operator to isolate an object or group of objects for separate counting.

Simple adjustments of the size discrimination dial eliminate objects that are smaller than the determined size threshold.

Objects and their backgrounds vary widely, therefore, the operator can select from three methods of illumination to enhance visibility and increase accuracy. 1) Transmitted - for routine objects of high contrast with relatively transparent backgrounds. 2) Reflected - for objects with high contrast with opaque backgrounds. 3) Darkfield - for objects with low contrast with relatively transparent backgrounds.

Object RecognitionThe CCD video camera functions as a scanning light detector. The electronic beam moves across the dish in a series of horizontally adjacent lines, generating a continuous electronic video signal.

The video signal is compared with the preset sensitivity and size thresholds established initially by the operator. These thresholds are controlled by the sensitivity and colony size adjustments. When the thresholds are exceeded, a pulse is generated by each colony. Therefore, the smaller particles and debris which are below the threshold are not detected. After the entire dish is scanned, and the total number of signals exceeding the threshold is shown on the LED display. To compensate for any colonies masked in the stacking ring area of the plate, and those which may overlap, the operator may choose to compensate the count by applying an electronic compensation factor.

Counting ResolutionThe CCD video camera in effect “sees” only one object at a time as it scans across and down the entire illumination area. The minimum object size that can be detected is related to the object diameter, optical magnification, and the number of lines in the scanning pattern. The scanning lines are controlled by the CCD video camera and it electronic circuitry. The minimum object size that can be detected also depends upon the contrast between the object and the background.

A minimum contrast level of 20% is required to accurately count objects 0.2 mm in diameter. As higher contrast levels are achieved, a minimum object size of 0.1 mm in diameter can be counted.

Closely spaced, clustered, or overlapping objects may be counted as multiple or single units, depending on the orientation of the objects to the scan line (see Fig. 1). In general, such conditions are effectively overcome by employing the compensation factor within the instrument. Another technique is to rotate the subject which contains the objects, recording the average of a few counts at different object orientations. Optional lenses are available to optically magnify the objects by a factor of two, allowing their detection at about one-half of the normal size and spacing requirements.

ApertureA very simple rapid adjustment at the start of the counting operation is used to establish the size and position of the scanning area. The entire subject may be viewed , but the area that is counted is segmented by the electronic aperture . The aperture is calibrated in square millimeters in the event a statistical comparison of different size areas may be needed. The aperture is viewed on the video monitor and appears as a brighter area superimposed over the subject being counted.

All products manufactured by BioLogics, Inc. are warranted to the purchaser to be free of defects caused by faulty materials of workmanship as follows: defective parts and materials will be replaced, or at the election of BioLogics, repaired at no charge for a period of one (1) year from the date of sale, and the labor required for such replacement or repair will be provided by BioLogics at no charge for a period of six (6) months from the date of sale. BioLogics’ liability under this warranty is restricted to replacing, repairing, or issuing credit (at BioLogics’ option) for any BioLogics product found to be defective within the warranty period stated above. Defective products shall be returned to the place of manufacture, with shipping charges prepaid by the Purchaser. BioLogics shall make a reasonable determination as to the existence or cause of any alleged defect and warranty eligibility upon the return of the defective product. The foregoing warranty shall not be valid if 1) BioLogics is not promptly notified in writing of a defect within fifteen (15) days after the defect is noted or 2) if the product has been subjected to abuse, misuse, accident, alteration, neglect, unauthorized repair or installation.

THE FOREGOING WARRANTY IS MADE EXPRESSLY IN LIEU OF ANY AND ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY AND ANY WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND ANY OTHER OBLIGATIONS OR LIABILITY ON THE PART OF BIOLOGICS, INC. (THE SELLER). IN NO EVENT, INCLUDING THE CASE OF A CLAIM OF NEGLIGENCE, SHALL BIOLOGICS BE LIABLE FOR INCIDENTAL AND/OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.

When an instrument is required to be installed by a BioLogics engineer, technician or sales representative, the period of this Warranty shall begin on the date of such installation provided that any use of the instrument prior to such installation shall, at the sole election of BioLogics, void this Warranty. When installation by BioLogics’ personnel is not required, the period of this Warranty shall begin as described above. Whether or not the instrument has been installed or shipped pursuant to a purchase order, and any trial period shall be deducted from the Warranty period that would otherwise apply under a subsequently placed purchase order for that instrument.
