The basics

For current data refer to websitewww.cab.de/en/marking-laser.

All information on scopes of delivery, design and technical specifications correspond to the date of printing. Subject to change.

Using marking lasers is economic, when it comes to precisely and durably mark smallest components up to larger parts. The benefits of laser marking are manifold. The most significant are:

• Focusing in smallest spaces, as laser beams allow enormous energies to be bundled.

• Flexibility, as both metal and plastic parts can be marked. Even in places that are difficult to access.

• High marking speed, as strongly focused light does not have to overcome mechanical resistance.

• No mechanical force on components, as heat energy is used without direct contact.

• High durability, as laser marking is insensitive to acids or alkalis, UV radiation, heat and abrasion.

Marking lasers of the FL+ series are designed for a wide range of applications. The process allows stationary as well as on-the-fly marking on metal or plastic parts in various industries:

• Medtech: For example machine-readable codes on medical or surgical instruments. According to the guidelines for “Unique Device Identification“.

• Aerospace: Datamatrix codes on all strategic component parts, such as turbine components.

• Electronics: For quality assurance with permanent codes and alpha-numeric characters on PCBs, terminals, switches and others.

• Automotive: Laser marked codes for traceability of automotive components and assemblies. Allows marking contents including production data, date as well as serial, part and lot numbers, and others.

Marking laser FL+ – Applications

cab FL+ marking lasers are primarily used for the processing of metal and plastic parts. Different methods are commonly used depending on the requirement and material.

EngravingAblation of the material through evaporation with very high energy density that produces a deep marking with contour sharpness. An additional color change depending on the alloy or chemical composition improves the readability of the marking contents.

Surface removalThe laser marker removes top coating to show a different-colored material underneath. Examples: top coatings or anodizing layers, laser label material or day and night design on control buttons.

AnnealingIs mainly used with high-alloy, stainless steels and with titanium. Laser annealing creates a color change when the material is selectively exposed to heat and oxygen without noticeable material ablation.

Color changeIs used for the processing of plastic material. The color change depends on the chemical composition of the material and additives. Destroying color pigments and creating gas bubbles within the material produces light marks. Carbonization produces dark marks.

FoamingThe laser beam melts the workpiece surface locally. Small gas bubbles increase the volume of the molten material producing a raised marking. Small gas bubbles within the material diffusely reflect the light.

Marking laser FL+

Different plano-spherical lenses allow the lasers to mark in a field of 69x69 up to 290x290 mm. The lasers are used to mark on plastic, metal and color-coated surfaces.

The marking lasers FL+ consist of two fiber coupled functional modules: The scan head and the control unit with integrated laser source. The scan head may be assembled in each installation position.

Control unit with integrated laser source is available in two different designs.

Precise, fast, economic

Performance and quality of a marking mainly relies on the output power and the laser beam‘s focusing.

cab marking lasers FL+ are diode-pumped, air-cooled and offer highest beam quality and pulse peak power.

An output power of the laser source of 10 up to 50 Watt is available.

Type 2 “Rack” for FL+10/20/30/50 Watt Preferably used for the integration into 19“ cabinets. Control unit and laser source are incorporated in a 19“ rack mount.

Type 1 “Tower” for FL+20/30 WattVery compact design, used both as desktop version and for the integration into housings.

Laser typeplate handling THS+

The laser typeplate handling THS+ allows to durably mark flat parts as e.g. typeplates or marker sheets made of plastics or metal.

Designed for the processing of nameplates for motors, pumps, control cabinets, and others it is used for applications in demanding industrial environments where the contents needs to be clearly legible even after years.

Two different designs are available:

Type 1 “THS+Basic”Plates or other flat parts up to a thickness of 4 mm are individually inserted into a jig, fed after start, marked and then automatically rejected.

Type 2 “THS+M”The plates are stacked in a magazine. The upper one of a stack is marked and then automatically rejected.

Extraction and filter devices AF1.1

Material processing with lasers produces toxic dust and gaseous contaminants. The extraction system protects the operator’s health and prevents the working area and lens from being contaminated, thus providing a constant laser output power.

The contaminated air of the working area is extracted by a high-power turbine and transported to the filter unit via a flexible hose. Contaminant particles, respectively dust are filtered out in the pre-filter and filter for suspended particles. Gaseous contaminants are absorbed by the active carbon filter. The cleaned air is then diverted into the environment.

The extraction and filter device AF1.1 features

• compact design, • small footprint,• simple and fast change of filter,• low sound level due to extract air silencer,• monitoring of filter saturation and motor.

Marking software cabLase

All FL+ marking lasers have installed the marking software cabLase Editor 5. Key features are:

• Graphic design of layouts• Control of marking• Monitoring marking process

• Stand-alone modecabLase supports marking without the need of a PC. Marking layouts and associated fonts are downloaded and then transferred to the laser control for further management. Allows process control and monitoring by digital signals.

• Remote host modecabLase allows to be remote controlled via serial, Ethernet or ProfiBus connection by a host control, e.g. PC/PLC. Programming commands are available to select layouts, to change marking data, for process control and monitoring.

• Remote API interfaceSpecially designed to be integrated into demanding manufacturing environments. Allows to generate objects, its parameter setting, management and processing of associated layouts and variable contents externally from a PC or via PLC.

• COM Automation Server For individual, customizable marking applications. It offers a command library with all functions of the marking software cabLase.

• Integration in ERP and MES systemscabLase offers program modules for the integration of laser marking systems into MES and ERP platforms. As member in SAP’s Printer Vendor Program cab has access to e.g. implement marking applications to the SAP data stream.
