Type of Claim Hull damage, salvage, clean-up and reef damage claims P&I North of England In the afternoon of 19 August 2021 the bulk carrier Navios Amaryllis ran aground on the Rasfaree Reef of the Kaafu Atoll in the Maldives prompting serious concern regarding the possibility of pollution from the vessel’s bunkers. The Navios operated bulk carrier, which was sailing in ballast condition, had departed Tuticorin, India on 16 August 2021 and was underway to Saldanha Bay, South Africa for orders when she ran aground on a reef situated some 16.9 nm from Male. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and other local parties were notified of the grounding and since then they have been working alongside the vessel owners to produce a plan to refloat the vessel. A tug, the Virgo, was deployed from Sri Lanka and arrived at the grounding site on 23 August 2021. The grounding is reported to have occurred following a failure of the vessel’s main engine. Damage assessment has been undertaken and a salvage plan has been approved by the local authorities which will prioritise the removal of fuel and pollutants on board before steps to refloat the vessel are attempted. In the meantime all 19 crew on board are safe and well. Click here for video.
