Castle News, no.82 June ‘13

Welcome from the Chair The last month has seen some change within the club but the same amazing spirit and commitment that characterises it! Not only were we blessed with lovely weather for the LPV but with a great team of club members who have helped to make it yet another successful club event. I appreciate just how much work goes into running an event like that and special thanks must go to Ant.

The End of Season bash was a great opportunity to join everyone in celebrating what has been an enjoyable 12 months. We have a lot of talented children and young adults and it's lovely to be able to acknowledge their hard work and dedication to the club. A lot of hard work went gone into organising the evening and huge thanks go to Keeley, Rachel and Frankie for their work.

On a personal note I'd like to thank you all. I have been made to feel so welcome and had so much support I'm very fortunate. My biggest thanks go to Marie who, in her first few weeks as Secretary has really kept me on my toes!!

Any current Castle members attending the show were made welcome to join the group for a game in the scorching sunshine!

Madeley Scout Group Get a Taste for

Volleyball Rob Bellamy and Ant Viggars also attended the Madeley Scout Group, based at Betley Village Hall. This is a return visit after making links with the group last summer. Castle aims to provide equipment and occasional coaching support when needed. A few of the group are now NSVC members, having first tried the sport at a scout session.

Madeley Centre Sports Day, & School Fair

A group of U15 girls attended both the Madeley Centre Community Sports Day event and the Madeley High School Summer Fair. With the aid of the clubs outdoor equipment, the girls set up a Come & Play court and encouraged young people to join them in game of volleyball. The girls providing tips on the basic rules and skills, along info about getting involved with NSVC. The group did a great job and managed to have a fun time themselves.

Castle has been busy out and about in the local community in recent weeks, promoting both our club and sport...

Wessex hit jackpot with facility development for partners The Bournemouth local press reported on exciting news for the sport and particularly other top club Wessex this month with planning permission granted for a large new facility. “Elite Bournemouth sporting academy, LeAF Studio, is celebrating as the school has received planning permission to build a multi-million pound sports hall suitable for International events. The academy has enlisted the help of four former Olympians, one of whom is Dorset-born Dan Hunter, to help manage the new facility, which is due for completion around Christmas. The new hall will measure 27m by 60m with a 12.5m high roof, meaning it will be able to host international events for a variety of different sports and hold a minimum of 1,000 spectators. Executive Principal Dr Annetta Minard said the number of students applying for the elite academy has doubled in the last year, meaning they are nearing their maximum capacity of 500 students. Dr Minard said: “For the athletes here, sport is their profession and business. There is a buzz about the place because this development means we will be able to compete on a European and International level and give back the community.” The hall will host European matches and tournaments, super 8 national teams, England junior teams and school tournaments for football, volleyball, handball, hockey and tennis.

Former ‘Castle player takes West Midlands role Former NSVC Junior and NVL player (2 spells) Mark Speake, one of the most naturally gifted players to wear the ‘Castle shirt is now coaching back in his native Telford and has taken on the role of coordinator for the West Midlands Junior Teams. We wish Mark the best of luck with this role!

If you would like to contribute to this league which provided opportunities for over 100 players to compete in last season, contact NSVA Chair Will Roberts on [email protected] Entry details for the 2013-14 season will be circulated and published in July with new entrants welcome!

Sitting Volleyball Sitting Volleyball will be returning in the next few weeks in July, with tournaments at both Social and Junior sessions.

Despite heavy rain in the week leading into the event the 2013 ‘Castle Let’s Play Volleyball Tournament took place without a hitch thanks to the usual excellent organizational skills of the NSVC volunteers led by Ant Viggars.

This was the 7th year that the club had hosted this event, having taken it on in 2007 when another West Midlands club pulled out of hosting. After last year’s cancellation due to rain ‘Castle were determined to make it an excellent event, and on the day they did so with a fantastic 41 teams competed, with approx 150 players playing in 6 divisions, across 14 courts.

Lows -Lack of u13 boys entries. None from outside NSVC/Madeley -7 teams withdrawing Friday evening due to weather forecast Highs -20 NSVC volunteers running the event! - Great Weather!

BOYS COMPETITION The boys’ teams across the whole tournament were displaying excellent skills, showing teamwork of an extremely high level. Madeley were dominant against Ormiston, securing a 2-0 victory through the great blocks of Tom Carter and excellent smash serves of Evan Morris. There was a shock result of the day when Sir Graham Balfour beating highly fancied Painsley. Madeley continued to dominate however with 2 more definitive wins over Holden Lane and Painsley. The closest game of the day was between Ormiston and Sir Graham Balfour, finishing 1-1. Madeley’s superior power at the net gave the Newcastle team another 2-0 victory in the gold medal match against Sir Graham Balfour. Meanwhile Painsley claimed 3rd place with a convincing 2-0 win over Ormiston.

Volleyball makes a successful debut at the Sainsbury’s School Games Festival for Staffs/Stoke! A team of 8 club volunteers ran this county finals event following a series of local competitions in various school sports partnerships across Staffordshire. This year the competition was a demonstration but it is hoped that if 2014 it is expanded to be a full event within the programme, and continues to give ‘Castle a great route into working with more schools.

GIRLS COMPETITION In the girls’ tournament Madeley again looked strong, beating Haywood 2-0. Meanwhile the second game between Painsley and Blessed William Howard was relatively evenly matched with the final score standing at a 1 all draw, with the girls passing solidly and consistently in order to get the ball over the net. The girls’ competition continued to produce nail-biting games with Madeley and Painsley finishing 1-1. Blessed William Howard later showed an impressive display of skills during their 2-0 victory over Fairoak Academy, which pushes the Stafford school into medal contention. Similarly to their male counterparts, the Madeley girls’ team sealed their gold medal with a 2-0 win over Blessed William Howard. A victory for Painsley over Fairoak gave them a well deserved silver medal.

The whole club celebrated another fantastic season in great style with a sell-out standing room only night at Newcastle Rugby Club. With some many members and their friends and family coming along and having a great night we are sure to have to make it s bigger night next summer! It was very much a night for celebrating success whilst looking forwards and the awards and speeches were led by new club chair Jeanette Carter – only the third chairperson for NSVC after Colin Roberts stood down after 25 years in the role! Huge thanks must be made right from the start to Keeley Guest, Rachel Copestake and Frankie Meli who, when asked by the committee to take on the role of organising really rolled up their sleeves and got on with it to fantastic effect – it was a truly brilliant night for the club!
