Not really an island, Portland is really a huge block of limestone (approx. 5 miles long) reached over an impressive narrow causeway with spectacular Chesil Beach on one side and a more sheltered bay and marina south of Weymouth on the other.
The drama of the coastline comes fully into play when you are at the southern tip where it can be dramatic in winter – a lighthouse has been positioned here for over 300 years to warn ships of the hazardous area.
Portland was once one of the main naval bases for the UK, with a prominent role in many conflicts. The building to be refurbished at Castle Court was built in 1906 as a canteen for use by the Royal Navy and later used to house many different functions and departments.
Soon after WWII Portland became the centre of helicopter operations for the navy and the Royal Navy Air Station was established with the canteen building converted into the main headquarters, operations centre, workshop and control tower.
The original Canteen Building was simple yet grand, finished in red brick with Portland Stone detailing. It was constructed as a naval canteen when the navy was increasingly using Portland Harbour as a harbour of refuge.
An unusual element is the helicopter control tower which was added when the building was converted for the Royal Navy Air station.
NATURAL BEAUTYThe port of Castletown, due to its naturally protected position, has long been home to fishermen - also to Portland Castle, a fortress built by Henry VIII to defend Weymouth against invasion from France and Spain.
Today the area has become an increasingly popular civilian port and recreation destination – evidenced by luxury yachts in the marina and a plethora of windsurfers skimming across the bay.
Protruding into the Channel, Portland has an almost Mediterranean feel in summer - quiet hamlets of bleached stone cottages bathed in spectacular light combine with dramatic hilltop vistas.
AN AREA OF OUTSTANDING
Country walks, impressive views and the best fresh air in the south of England.
