A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORI don’t believe The Devil has ever made anyone do anything. We are each 100% responsible for our own actions. This thing we call “The Devil” is a metaphor for any impulses we’d rather not admit to having. That age-old myth of “The Deal with The Devil,” given form by countless artists—Bulgakov, Goethe, whoever wrote The Bible—is likewise a metaphor for the bargains we make with ourselves, participating in systems we don’t believe in, gambling away our integrity for the sake of our desires.

The three unique artists behind The Black Rider—William S. Burroughs, Tom Waits, and Robert Wilson—created a modern fairytale nightmare for adults that broods on the powerful and pervasive patriarchy. Like all truly great artists, this trio made no attempt to assume answers, favoring the audience’s imagi-nations instead and content to let us be responsible for our own interpretations. Maybe this open quality is why The Black Rider has been revived so often since it premiered in Hamburg, Germany, back in 1992. Maybe this is also why the show can be as unsettling as it is entertaining. Or maybe it’s unsettling because it entertains. In that respect alone, The Black Rider is a peculiarly American take on the traditional European fairytales that inspired it.

The last thing I’ll say is simply to acknowledge that our country is in a very particular place at the moment with regard to its systems and assumptions. Considering that, I do hope tonight’s performance unsettles and entertains. I don’t expect it to change the world, or America. That’s not the role of art anyway. It’s our role as citizens, making our own choices—not just when interpreting a musical or in key Novembers, but every single day. And when the sun is threatening to set and a crow clutching a nearby branch has its eye on us, do we truly value our integrity over our desires? The crow knows.

Sweet dreams, y’all. Wake well.

Mark J, The Black Rider Director

Tom Waits, according to American critic Robert Hilburn, is “clearly one of the most important figures of the modern pop era.” For over 30 years, his music has taken adventurous turns, from confessional country-blues and jazz-flavored lounge, to primal rock and avant-garde musical theater. His songs explore the dark underbelly of society as he gives his uniquely human voice to adventurers both romantic and mercenary, drifters, con artists and those forgotten characters on the fringe and in the fray. Waits has expanded and drawn from a deep well of American and European song idioms: folk, blues, country, jazz ballads, polkas, waltzes,

cabaret, swing, popular ballads, and a category that can only be described as Waitsian. In the early ‘70s, Tom Waits was working as a doorman at the Heritage nightclub in San Diego, where artists of every genre performed. Waits began developing his own idiosyncratic musical style, combining song and monologue. He took his newly formed act to Monday nights at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, where musicians from all over stood in line all day to get the oppor-tunity to perform onstage that night. Shortly thereafter, Waits was signed to Asylum Records. He was 21 years old.

William S. Burroughs was a Beat Generation author and pop culture legend. Having written eighteen novels and novellas, six collections of short stories, and four collections of essays, he also collaborated with numerous performers and musicians and appeared in many films. He was born into a wealthy family in St. Louis, Missouri. He left home in 1932 to attend Harvard University, studied English and anthropology as a postgraduate, and later attended medical school in Vienna. In 1942, Burroughs enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve during World War II, but was turned down. He befriended Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac

in New York City in 1943. His work is primarily drawn from his experiences as a heroin addict as he lived throughout Mexico City, London, Paris, Morocco, and the Amazon. Burroughs acciden-tally killed his second wife, Joan Vollmer, in 1951 in Mexico City with a pistol during their “William Tell Act” and was subsequently convicted of manslaughter. He is aruably best known for his third novel Naked Lunch (1959), which sparked national controversy when it became the subject of a court case alleging that it violated the U.S. sodomy laws. Burroughs died from a heart attack in his home in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1997.

KITTY BOSHERHaving had the opportunity to raise four great children and two lovely step-daughters waay over in Virginia, I am fortunate to have ten precious grandchildren. Although I’ve lived in one town my whole life, and in a post-Civil War farmhouse since 1973, my family is far-flung: El Salvador, Indonesia, Charlottesville, and—Berkeley—which is why I often refer to myself as a “frequently-flying grandmother.” When Shotgun’s Artistic Director Patrick Dooley was in his 20’s I wondered whether he would go into politics or into theater. To my great joy, he’s done both.

GUY TIPHANEGuy just loves Shotgun Players and sometimes can’t resist seeing a play several times. He writes at guytiphane.wordpress.com.

PEET’S COFFEE & TEA

FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORWelcome to the Ashby Stage, home of the Shotgun Players, where the greatest compliment isn’t that you love all our plays, but that you always feel welcome, and it’s always an adventure! If you’re new here, hopefully we’ll prick your interest enough to get you coming back for more. If you’re a regular, try starting up a conversation with someone nearby. Friendliness and theatre go together. It’s just the truth. Along those lines, I’d love for you to consider sticking around after the performance to take part in one of our brief post show conversations. We’ve been doing these for a year now, and I can’t tell you how inspiring and revelatory they’ve been. That bit of insight you share (or hear) could be the spark of something meaningful. I also hope you’ll check out our season announcement (on the back of this program) and consider joining us as a subscriber. I already know what you’re thinking: “But I’m just not the subscriber type!” If having an amazing time 5–6 times a year with great seats, free parking, flexible scheduling, and tasty cocktails sounds fun to you, then maybe we can change your mind. Plus, remember: friendly and adventurous!

For over 25 years, honesty and encouragement from folks like you have inspired us to keep looking for new and exciting ways to be a positive force in our community. Sometimes that means putting 88 solar panels on our roof, selling local baked goods, and covering our building with beautiful murals. But when it’s all said and done, it’s about working with local artists, opening our doors, and enjoying some theatre—together. Thanks for coming,

Patrick Dooley, Artistic Director
