ANZAC is an acronym for the Australia New Zealand Army Corps.

This year, 2015, is the 100 year anniversary of the forming of our ANZAC troops and what we refer to as the ANZAC Spirit.

My little goat shows that same spirit in his endeavours to fit into the family who win him in an ANZAC Day Two-up game.

He shows mateship, endurance, creativity, loyalty, and bravery among other traits.

The text of the book is about the goat and his story, but the illustrations give clues to how Australians and New Zealanders commemorate ANZAC Day. Hopefully conversations will arise from the illustrations. Teachers' notes and activity sheets will be available.

Anzac-The Story of a Little Goat will be published under the imprint of Itchy Emu Press.

ANZAC The Story of a Little Goat

The area in which I live inspires my writing all the time. After meeting and falling in love with a little goat, I was inspired to draw him, and naturally a story happened.

This story was of course inspired by the little goat, but also by the goat's name, An-zac. He got this unusual name because he came to live with friends of mine one ANZAC Day.

For those not familiar with ANZAC Day, it is an important day in Australia and New Zealand as it commemorates the landing of allied soldiers on the shores of Gallipoli.

Jacque Duffy has a new project.

It is a picture book that I have launched a Kickstarter project with. The book is currently recommended to teachers through ALEA (Australian Literacy educators Association).

Kickstarter is how I plan to make it happen.

I was hoping you could please share the link to the pro-ject with your friends.

Nabo launches QLD Community Grant Program

A Queensland community group or charity will receive up to $10,000 to fund their project in a state-

wide search for initiatives that build stronger and safer suburbs.

Nabo – Australia’s first major social network for local communities – launches its community grant

program today. The network will call on its partnerships with local Councils and community organisa-

tions to spread the word of its search.

The Nabo Community Grants will provide up to $10,000 in funding to a local project or group on Nabo

which best demonstrates the way in which it connects to its local community, works for the inclusion

of marginalised Australians, or helps the community prepare or respond to a disaster. Examples of

eligible concepts may include health education classes for locals, flood response projects or even sup-

port programs for the elderly or disabled.

“Nabo’s key aim is to connect more people and organisations in their local communities. Local pro-

jects and groups are a major part of this interaction. By launching a community grant program, we

hope to encourage more local groups to thrive,” said Adam Rigby, Nabo Founder and CEO.

“The project or group that will receive the $10,000 will be unique, innovative and have a forward-

thinking approach to meeting a local need.”

Queenslanders and Queensland community organisations can enter by signing up to nabo.com.au

and creating an online ‘group’ for their project or organisation. They will then be asked to complete

an online community grant application to ensure their eligibility for the funding.

A judging process will follow where five finalists will be shortlisted for the Queensland grant.

Nabo members will then be invited to vote for their favourite project. The project with the most votes

will be awarded the community grant.

The Queensland grant recipient will be announced in May.

Nabo aims to reach 1 million Australians with 60 councils and 6000 local community groups and local

authorities by the end of 2015.

For interviews and more information, please contact:

Suzanne Colville | 0406 050 381 | 02 9279 3330 | e: [email protected]

About Nabo

Nabo is a free neighbourhood social network that enables residents and community organisations to instantly and directly connect online with others in their communities. Nabo differentiates itself from other social media platforms by enabling residents to develop real ‘geographical’ communities (bound by suburb) online. Nabo gives communi-ties enormous potential: a shared voice, increased connectedness and, in turn, potentially an increased sense of safe-ty and security. Visit www.nabo.com.au for more details.

SFS the place to be seen in the dark

Review by Margaret Pomeranz Aki Kaurismaki, is the Finnish filmmaker with a distinctive style. He makes simply lovely films, always with great heart. His latest, LE HAVRE, is set in the port city in Normandy where shoe-shine man Marcel Marx, ANDRE WILMS, is plying his trade in an ever-increasing world of sneakers. His wife Arletty, KATI OUTINEN, becomes ill, is diagnosed with what one assumes is cancer and is not expected to live. When the doctor assures her that miracles do happen, she replies 'Not in our neighbourhood'. But actually that is exactly what happens. When Marcel runs across a young illegal immigrant Idrissa, BLONDIN MIGUEL, he hides him from the authorities and rallies the locals to help the boy get to his mother in England. Hard on the heels of the boy is Inspector Monet, JEAN PIERRE DARROUSSIN. The droll stylization of this working class world is like naïve art as it tells this fairy tale. The design, the performances, the dialogue are all unmistakably Kaurismaki. His affection for his idiosyncratic characters is obvious. And it is a fairy tale, the real world seems to have little of the kindness, the humanity shown in this film. The response to it in Cannes last year, where it screened in Competition, was extremely warm and that's exactly how you respond to it, it embraces you and you want to hug back.
