To interview the student himself and perhaps to give him additional tests. When a complete data about the student have been collected, the case should be written and a tentative diagnosis and plan of treatment should be formulated.

PLANNING THE CASE STUDY
If possible, choose a student from one of your classes who you feel needs attention and help, and who will cooperate with you.
Select a case in which you are interested, both for the standpoint of the nature of the case and the personality of the individual concerned.
![Page 9: Case study tool for effective counseling](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042606/546b6de9af79593a7f8b520c/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
When considering various students, give some thought to the shy, quiet and retiring student. Students of this type are sometimes interesting subjects for case study than students whose difficulties or behavior cause them to be notices.
Plan only as much as you feel that you can accomplish.

PRINCIPLES TO BE OBSERVED IN WRITING THE CASE
Write objectively, simply and with directedness – the description of the case should be as objective and the interpretation should be as impersonal as possible.
![Page 12: Case study tool for effective counseling](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042606/546b6de9af79593a7f8b520c/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Use both general statements and specific illustrations.
Eliminate irrelevant items, confine the case report to a few type written pages.

SUGGESTIONS TO CLARIFY PROBLEMS IN APPLYING AND EVALUATING TREATMENT
A case investigator should not attempt to apply treatment for difficulties that are entirely outside his experience. If the problem is one of the reading or study difficulty, he should be able to offer the student valuable help in learning.
![Page 14: Case study tool for effective counseling](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042606/546b6de9af79593a7f8b520c/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
During the period of treatment, the case investigator should keep a careful journal record of the progress of treatment. He should depend upon his memory but keep a record of his interview.

If the case is the kind that leads itself to measurement, comparable tests should be administered at the beginning and the end of the treatment.
After the case has been released from treatment, it should be followed up and the individual under observation for a few months to make sure that a relapse does not take place.

ADVANTAGES OF CASE STUDY
It permits the person to be understood and treated as an individual.
It also provides a basis for more complete understanding and gives a more accurate evaluation of events, thus preventing superficiality and quick judgments.

It can reduce the number of errors in diagnosis by ensuring that the individual thoroughly studies the facts of the clients’ presents.
