Thermal Cover ‘Secondary Protection’ of 2-8C "Sea Freight in Reefers Reference: TP3G104 Date: November 2014 Protection Product Tested: SilverSkin PB500 Freight: Chilled Pharmaceutical

Overview Background

•  Pfizer were seeing excursions during the sea port loading / unloading duration when the reefers were not connected to a power supply. These durations can be between 4 and 12 hours, causing temperature rise / loss within the reefer.

•  Pfizer carried out in depth summer and winter live testing using shipments between UK and USA (via Canada). Various protection products were tested and compared in ‘side by side’ tests.

Aim: •  The aim of the study was to compare solutions and find a cost effective

way of protecting 2-8C goods from excursions during the ‘power off’ duration of the reefer during the loading and unloading process at the sea port.

Test Protocol •  Pallets covered with various protection fitted were shipped in a reefer container

from UK to USA via Montreal, Canada. –  UK: Havant to Liverpool

–  Sea: Liverpool to Montreal

–  Canada/USA: Montreal to Memphis

•  Low density product was used as product load.

•  Loggers were placed outside of the packaging but under the protection. –  Top of load

–  Low front rear

–  Low left right

•  Duration –  Winter 21 days "

(7th to 27th Feb 2014)

–  Summer 17 days "(13th to 30th Sept 2013)

Conclusion TP3 SilverBubble PB500 Thermal Cover •  Second best performing system tested (First was SilverPod HalfPag

Ocean System with 5C coolants) •  Minor excursions outside +20C to +80C were recorded during power-offs

in both summer and winter. •  System without base performed better over summer conditions. •  System with base performed better over winter testing conditions.
