2. Synopsis The song is a mixture of dance-pop and techno house and is abouta woman who is searching for a man that can please her, e.g. thelyrics someone who can please me, love me all night long. Thevideo shows Rihanna at various locations in water, desert/Africanhuts & in a nest. 3. Themes and Motifs There is an overall animal theme throughout the whole musicvideo. In each scene Rihanna portrays a different animal. In thefirst scene where Rihanna is in the water, she uses snake-likemovements in the water to make her seem like an animal. In otherscenes such as the African hut scene, Rihanna is wearing leopardprint, so there is always a link to an animal in every scene. I thinkthis is done to connect how animals hunt to how she is hunting andsearching for a mate. There is also another scene where Rihanna is channelling theHindu God Shiva where she has multiple arms. Shiva is also knownas the destroyer and the transformer. 4. Performance The music video is concept based. It uses the theme of animalsand the portrays that though dance, costume and set. It is mainlymade up of choreography, especially at the chorus. The music video uses a lot of imagery of eyes, for example in thebeginning scene there is a close up shot of Rihanna eyes and inanother scene it begins the same. Also Rihanna and her dancers inone part create the shape of an eye uses their hands. This couldbe done to highlight the importance of eyes because they link theShiva, the Hindu God and also the searching and looking forsomeone to please her. 5. Camera Angles & Editing Techniques At the beginning of the music video there is an extreme close up ofRihannas eyes where the rest of her face is submerged under waterwhich once again highlights the importance of eyes in this music video. The camera cuts to different angles of her in the water in the openingscene, for example shots of her eyes, then her from the side then a shotto how her back was moving. This is to show the viewers the set in thebackground and her animal-like movements. During the music video fading is used between scenes where it fades toblack and fades into another scene. I think because this is a techno songthat its used to build up tension before the beat comes in for the chorus. 6. Camera Angles & Editing Techniques Because this song is so fast it uses rapid cutting between scenesand images during the music video. This is to help buildexcitement and the fast images are easy to remember. Also therapid cuts match the tempo. Split screens are used where there is two or more of her onscreen. The image of her is often mirrored back. This is done tocreate a mystical and spiritual feeling. 7. Mise en Scene & Special Effects The opening scene begins with dark misty water in a forest and then Rihannaslowly comes into view. She has on retile-like scales covering her chest which isused to link to the animal theme. There is another scene which is mainly shown inquick cuts where there is blurred lighting on a yellow background where Rihannalooks more gently and soft than the other dark sets. There is also a set whereRihanna is dancing in front of African huts. Her dancers are dressed in tribal wearand she is wearing a zebra print top which once again links to the animalistictheme. They also use naked trees and fire which may represent the desperateneed to find someone. One special effect they use is two different scenes flashing on screen at once. Alsowhen they beat picks up the screen shakes to match the heavy tempo. Rihanna isedited to have multiple arms to represent the Hindu God. In verse 3 Rihanna is wearing glitter on her face with a red dress on and alsoearrings that look like elephant tusk. This is to make her look mystical. 8. Role of Lip-Syncing & Post Modernism Rihannas video is definitely performance based as there is plentyof lip synching. When she is lip syncing, it is shown from differentshots, for example during the hut scene there are long shotswhere she is lip synching however in another scene the lip syncingis more close up. I think the close up shots help it to seem morebelievable. There is a lot of techno beats used so there is moredancing than lip synching used in the video. I dont think that this video is very post-modern as it performancebased only and doesnt mix in conceptual aspects. What may bepost modern about this video is how the dancers and Rihannarepresent animals as this is out of the norm and not expected. 9. Applying this to my music video I like how they have different scenes flashing at the same time at onceon screen. I would apply this to mine because it looks professional andmakes it different. The use of different sets has me interested because they are all sodifferent but they link together using one theme. Also the use of having mirrored images on the screen is a interestingfeature to use and I think if I was to do a song similar that may have amystical or enchanting theme then it would be perfect to use. I think that the age group may be teens to adults but younger kids mayenjoy dancing to this regardless of the actual meaning of the song.
