Part 2: October 25 – 26, 2013 Metro Denver Area

Presented by Barbara J. Conroy, Ed.D, Holly Hultgren, Ed.D, Becky McClure, and Fred Wall, Ph.D

This 4-day seminar series is geared toward individuals who are fulfilling the administrative licensure requirement and for practicing administrators wanting to deepen their understanding of educator evaluation. It’s also appropriate for non-administrators who have been named “designees” under SB 191. Learn about effective staff and teacher evaluation methods in one of CASE’s most popular seminar series that emphasizes the skills and procedures critical for any evaluator under Colorado’s new educator effectiveness system. Familiarize yourself with the regulations of the law; the relationship between evaluation and instruction, school improvement, and academic growth; and strategies for ensuring meaningful evaluation in a standards-based practice.

RURAL EDUCATORSTuesday, July 23, 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Facilitated by former Superintendent and BOCES Executive Director David Van Sant

The CASE Rural Educators Pre-Convention Workshop is a must attend event for rural school administrators. We will respond directly to a rural needs assessment, and we plan to bring the most current updates from CDE, CASB, the Colorado Rural Schools Caucus, the Colorado BOCES Association, and the Colorado Rural Council. You will have ample opportunity to dialogue and network with your colleagues about issues of shared interest, and we promise you will be empowered with at least one new piece of knowledge that will help you in the 2013-14 school year.

JIM ZIOLKOWSKI

Igniting the Spark

Wednesday, July 24 8:30 am – 10:00 am

In 1991, Jim Ziolkowski left a fast-track job in corporate finance with General Electric to become the Founder, President, and CEO of buildOn, a non-profit organization breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations through service and education. In this presentation, he’ll share the innovative business lessons and personal reflections that he’s gleaned through his work, as well as insights about the power of one person to make a difference in the world around them. You’ll learn how to affect positive change as an education leader and understand how creating the spark for change can lead to much bigger results than you ever anticipated.

Jim Ziolkowski is the Founder, President and CEO of buildOn, which over two decades has reached tens of thousands of youth and empowered them through service and education. The organization has constructed over five hundred schools around the world and there are currently over total 73,000 students. STEVE GROSS

Leading with Joy and Optimism

Thursday, July 25 8:30 am – 10:00 am

Smart leaders are serious about play. Not only does it infuse organizations with greater enthusiasm and motivation, but it also helps all of us find inspiration during change-filled times. Join us as Steve shares fascinating research and firsthand lessons learned during his crisis response efforts following 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Haiti earthquake. He’ll reveal the practices he’s found most effective in working with children who have experienced trauma brought on by chronic exposure to poverty, violence, and illness, as well as explain how to replicate these strategies in your own school and district. You’ll learn how to apply Steve’s insights to your own life and understand how effectively utilizing play enables you and your staff to reach your fullest potential.

Steve Gross is the Founder, Executive Director and Chief Playmaker of the Life is good Playmakers, a nonprofit organization that partners with frontline professionals – such as teachers, social workers, and child life specialists – who dedicate their lives to helping children overcome poverty, violence, and illness. These Playmakers use the power of play to build healing, life-changing relationships with the children in their care. To date over 3,500 certified Playmakers have cared for more than 210,000 children throughout the United States and Haiti. A nationally sought-after speaker, he presents frequently to business groups, nonprofits, universities, and schools about the power of playful engagement — an approach that builds more joyful, connected, empowering, and inspiring environments for leaders, teachers, and the children in their care.

MAIN CONVENTION | JULY 24 – 26, 2013

Keynote Speakers

Legislative and Policy Issues Breakfast Friday, July 26, 8:00 am – 10:00 am (Program starts at 8:30 am)

2013 has been a tough partisan year at the State Capitol, characterized by differing views on how best to move Colorado education forward for the benefit of all students. As always, CASE has remained focused on the major K-12 issues that impact all of us, including and especially on a bill overhauling school funding as we know it. It’s our unwavering priority to leverage the voice of school leaders across the state, and working in partnership with our members, we’ve accomplished some great things.

Come join us at this comprehensive, information-packed session to learn about the highs (and lows) of the past

legislative session, what it means for your school or district, and what to expect as we look toward the November election. CASE Executive Director Bruce Caughey, CASE Lobbyist Elisabeth Rosen, and guest policy speakers will walk you through the political and policy dynamics that stand to impact public education. We’ll also announce the winner of the 2013 CASE Policy Leader Award, and provide the chance for you to ask questions and get the latest updates on the topics of greatest interest to you.

D.J. VANAS

Keeping Your Warrior Spirit Strong

Friday, July 26, 10:30 am – 12:00 pm

All of us begin our careers with what D.J. Vanas calls a “warrior spirit” – that is, a strong sense of motivation and passion to make a difference. Yet over time, the stress and constant demands we face can take a toll and cause us to lose some of our spark. Based on concepts from his highly-acclaimed book, The Tiny Warrior: A Path to Personal Discovery & Achievement, D.J.’s compelling presentation will offer strategies that help invigorate your sense of purpose and level of professional performance. He’ll draw on the wisdom discovered in traditional Native American ceremonies to help you learn the true purpose of a warrior. Warriors spent their lives developing their talent and abilities to become assets to the tribe they served, and you’ll walk away from this presentation with a fresh understanding of how best to make a positive impact on your school or district.

D.J. Vanas is a leadership expert and author who has spoken in 49 states and around the world to groups including IBM, Disney, the Secret Service, the American Cancer Society, and at the White House. A former U.S. Air Force Officer with 10 years’ experience, he served as the Chief of Minority Enrollment for the Air Force Academy and also worked in the Air Force Space Program with companies like Aerospace and Hughes Aircraft. Vanas is a tribally-enrolled member of the Odawa Nation and was born into extreme poverty as the son of teenage parents. He completed his undergraduate work at the U.S. Air Force Academy and has a masters degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.

DOUGLAS FISHER, Ph.D

Creating a Culture of Achievement

Distinguished Speaker: Wednesday, July 24 3:30 pm – 4:45 pm

In this session, you’ll learn about promising practices and structures that help schools get into a cycle of continuous improvement. These practices are organized by pillars, or overarching ideas, that communicate to stakeholders how your school’s mission will be leveraged to positively impact student achievement and teaching and learning conditions. You’ll walk away from this presentation with an understanding about the critical ingredients that go into creating a culture of achievement and how to customize those for your own school.

Douglas Fisher, Ph.D, is Professor of Language and Literacy Education in the Department of Teacher Education at San Diego State University. He is a member of the California Reading Hall of Fame and is the recipient of an International Reading Association Celebrate Literacy Award, the Farmer Award for excellence in writing from the National Council of Teachers of English, as well as a Christa McAuliffe award for excellence in teacher education.

BARUTI KAFELE

Closing the Attitude Gap

Summit Seminar: Wednesday, July 24 1:45 pm – 4:45 pm

The gap in student achievement related to race, along with continued underachievement among students of color, continues to be one of the most important issues facing public education. Principal Kafele asserts that the root cause is failure to adequately address the attitude gap – the gap between those students who have the will to strive for academic excellence and those who do not. Learn how to effectively address the problem within your school or district at this session, while also gaining insights about the influence of attitude on learning.

Principal Baruti Kafele is a Milken National Educator, nationally best-selling author, and renowned educational consultant and motivational speaker. He has served in both teacher and principal roles, and as a principal, led the transformation of four different New Jersey public schools, including Newark Tech, which has been recognized twice by U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s best high schools.

WILLIAM J. DeMEO, Ph.D

Not Quite Burnt, But Crispy Around the Edges

Distinguished Speaker: Wednesday, July 24 3:30 pm – 4:45 pm

Job burnout is caused in large part by excessive stress, and education leaders are particularly prone to it because of the high level of responsibility and expectations that come with the job. Join us to learn some practical approaches to reducing stress as well as tips that you can immediately put to use in your daily life. Dr. William DeMeo will share how these strategies help prevent burnout and allow you to approach challenges with a greater sense of calm.

Dr. William DeMeo is a Developmental Neuro Psychologist and also one of the most sought-after national and international trainers for educators in the areas of mental health and brain-based learning. He has coordinated the mental health services for Cincinnati Public Schools’ Early Childhood Program for the past 25 years, and has a private practice that specializes in serving children and families.
