The history of Newspaper Cartoons dates back to more than the history of first newspaper ever published. The newspaper cartoons have always been the integral part of the every daily newspaper published. The concept of newspaper cartoons in Pakistan was first used by the Daily Jung before the partition of subcontinent. The use of cartoons in newspaper has evolved to the extent that today electronic media is also using animated cartoons to show

the lighter part of political situations in the country. Today people take cartoons as another media for delivering the news to the masses; they are usually precise straight forward and are more expressive than the news itself. A little pinch of laughter adds to the overall representation of the cartoon itself.

Almost all newspapers in Pakistan today publish cartoons on the daily basis; usually they are published on the front page of the newspaper. If studied together they usually portray three main concepts, political unrest, social problems and targeted politicians.

We have studied more than 50 cartoons published in the last one month publications, almost 90 percent of the total studied were specifically targeted towards politicians. Usually the most used politicians were the one in power, the mainstream media in Pakistan is more powerful than ever and this also shows in the cartoons made and published.

The image of government is usually portrayed in the negative way. For instance if take the picture showed above it shows the interior minister Mr. Rehman Malik, he carries the placard showing the terrorist are almost dead and the very next day 9 blasts in Lahore made his mouth mum. The visualization in the image is intense showing no regard for those who lost lives in the blast that night. This clearly shows that they usually don’t take in regard the moral and the ethical values usually required by the journalist and cartoonist before publishing anything for the masses.

Most of the cartoons published in the last one month newspapers were against the president and his actions regarding the current situation prevailing in Pakistan. The reason for that is the unpopularity of the president and his changing behavior over time. The cartoons are building a negative image of the government of Pakistan in people’s mind, by showing the personal interests of the politicians.

If we give a more wide prospective to the overall concept used to make these cartoons they usually cover the international politics as well. For example, the picture on left shows how USA is working against the interests of Pakistan. Mostly these cartoons show some of the unsaid stories of the news, or maybe news that can’t be air or published are told through this

media and since the perception is fully on the mindset of the individual looking at the cartoon there are many different ways how a person can perceive these cartoons. Another different aspect about the cartoons is the ways the cartoonist creates the images of the leaders. The cartoonist highlights the more prominent features of their faces and then tries to depict their image either negative or positive.

If we look at the more positive topics they cover, is the social problems faced by the masses in Pakistan. The cartoon showed on the right side tells the more compelling situation faced by every citizen the high fuel prices. In a very funny way the cartoonist is try to tell the hardship faced by the population of Pakistan.

Over all the cartoons published do have a positive and the negative elements in it. From being harsh at politics to being kind enough to highlight the problems faced by masses. The cartoonist try to elevate whatever comes their way. No matter how important or unimportant these cartoon maybe to individual they will remain the core element of everyday newspaper. The important point is how these cartoons help bring some betterment for the people of Pakistan, instead of taking them to the clash between politics and people they should work as the binding agent between the government and the people through whom they become into power.
