0-2. STANDARD SHOP PRACTICES

1. Protect painted surfaces of the body, andavoid staining or tearing seats. When workingon fenders and seats, be sure to cover themup with sheets.

2. Disconnect negative terminal connection ofthe battery when working on any electricalpart or component. This is necessary foravoiding electrical shocks and short-circuit-ing, and is very simple to accomplish: merelyloosen wing nut on negative terminal andseparate cable from terminal post.

3. In raising front or rear car end off the floorby jacking, be sure to put the jack againstthe center portion of the front suspensionframe or rear axle housing.

4. When performing service with either front orrear carend jacked up, be sure to place safetystands under chassis frame so that body issecurely supported. Refer to below figuresfor where to place safety stands. And thencheck to ensure that chassis frame does notslide on safety stands and the car is heldstable for safety's sake.

IMPORTANT:• When placing safety stands under chassis

frame, use care so that they don't contactother parts (such as bracket and pipes)installed inside (body center side) ofchassis frame.

• Place chocks against both right and leftwheels on the grou nd from both frontand rear.

5. Fig. 0-7 and 0-8 show how to lift the car byusing a hoist.

IMPORTANT:• Before lifting up the car, check to be

sure that end of hoist arm is not incontact with brake pipe, fuel pipe, bracket or any other part.

• When using frame contact hoist, applyhoist as shown below (right and left atthe same position). Lift up the car till 4tires are a little off the ground and makesure that the car will not fall off bytrying to move car body in both ways.Work can be started only after thisconfirmation.

• Before applying hoist to underbody, always take car balance throughoutservice into consideration. Car balanceon hoist may change depending of whatpart to be removed.

• Make absolutely sure to lock hoist aftercar is hoisted up.

When using frame contact hoist:

6. Orderliness is a key to successful overhauling.Trays, pans and shelves are needed to setaside disassembled parts in groups or setsin order to avoid confusion and misplace-ment. This is particularly important forengine overhauling.

7. Have on hand liquid packing-BOND No.1215 (99000-31110) - for ready use. Thispacking dope is an essential item to assureleak-free (water and oil) workmanship.

8. Each bolt must be put back t.o where it wastaken from or for which it is intended. Donot depend on your hunch in tighteningbolts for which tightening torque values arespecified: be sure to use torque wrenches onthose bolts.

9. It is advisable to discard and scrap gasketsand "a" rings removed in disassembly. Usenew ones in reassembly, and try not toeconomize gaskets and "a" rings.

10. Use of genuine parts is imperative. Use ofimitation parts is a big gamble on safety andperformance. Use genuine parts and live upto the trust your customer places on you.

11. Special tools save time and ensure goodworkmanship: They are available from:
